hey boy don't kill yourself. green's dictionary of slang is available online and allows you to explore 500 years of english vulgarity. you can search by part of speech, source, time period, etymology, and usage. there's a whole category for gay slang. they even have specific citations listed so you can see the exact context for yourself. boy did you know that in 1927 "to kneel at the altar" was slang for "to sodomize"
some other hits:
Princess: an effeminate and relatively youthful male homosexual or lesbian (1931-4)
Daffodil: effeminate young man (1925)
To throw a fuck into: to have sex with (1919)
Top sergeant: a masculine lesbian (1939) [‘she takes command of the girls’ privates’]
Lily: penis (1919)
Wolf: sexually aggressive man (1847); a homosexual top (1918)
Soul kiss: a deep kiss, involving putting one’s tongue into one’s partner’s mouth (1907)
Tom: a lesbian (1909); [in 'old tom'] prostitute catering to lesbians (1966)
Church mouse: a male homosexual who frequents crowded churches in order to fondle any potential sex partners. (1941)
Discover one's gender: to accept or acknowledge one’s homosexuality (1941) / Lose one's gender: To return to living as a heterosexual
Minty: a masculine lesbian (1941)
Also a lot of early 20th century vulgarity is recorded in Letter from My Father, which is a collection of letters published by a man who's dad was, in short, a major slut and human disaster who wrote about his sex life for his son. It's insane. You can find copies of it online & it's a wild fucking read (literally!) and I think a really interesting look at the life of a person who goes against our stereotypes of what people in the past were "supposed" to be like.
Anyways feel free to add y'all's favs to this post. & if you use this for gay historical fanfic please share with the class
#OH THIS IS EXTREMELY EXTREMELY HELPFUL#writing#resources#saving for later#maybe i should move my 1920s story from '25 to '27 because..... bro..........
note for writers: these are dated to the first time they were recorded, not necessarily to their first use. I imagine for many of these, they came about naturally through spoken language before they were written down anywhere. This is especially true of more underground slang because it's probably being recorded (in ways we still have) the least. So if you wanna use a term but it's a little off date-wise, give yourself some wiggle room.
also gonna take this moment to highlight two more i found recently:
Best boy: a sweetheart, a boyfriend, a husband. (1893) [w the obvious equivalent term 'best girl']
Honeydripper or honeydrips: a sexual partner (1917)
Like. Honeydripper?????? That's so horny I can't stop thinking about it. We need to bring THAT back

weary and wary are not the same word and have very different meanings and if i see one more person use wearily when they mean warily I’m gonna combust
weary: tired, worn-out, beaten down, exhausted, in need of rest. they were weary after their long journey. wearily, she sat down on the couch and kicked off her shoes. he had grown weary of this conversation.
wary: guarded, cautious, on-edge, careful. they were wary of the approaching stranger. warily, she poked at the dark shape in the corner of her room. he paused, wary, but nodded anyway.

PARSELSCRIPT!!
Hi. This is mostly for the people from Discord but tadah! I'm finally making that Tumblr post I've been talking about for months.
(Warning this will probably be very chaotic)
To anyone new who sees this: me and some friends made an alphabet for Parseltongue from Harry Potter, aka Parselscript. I'll take you on a little journey to explain my process and give you some tips, should you want to start writing it.
Disclaimer: I wanted to make this script usable for the writer I made it for so it's less of an actual language and more just some characters to represent the Latin (or ‘English’) letters. Like a cipher. It is not realistic. If I made this realistic I'd have to add all sorts of things to indicate body language and smell etc and also have to figure out what sounds Parseltongue actually has etcetera etcetera. No.
Alright.
It all started when we started talking about Parselscript in a Discord server and I asked my friend Ava to visualise the script because she seemed to have a clear vision of it, so I could use it to go from there.
That's how we got this.
I think we all wanted to go with something flowery for some reason, so we did.
After this I just messed around with brushes and shapes in Procreate for a while, tweaking things and trying to make it more writeable. I ended up with something like this (still a rough draft).
It may look a bit like random squiggles at first, and it kinda was at this point. As you can see there's also a lot of added dots and lines, which can be a bit hard to remember and I see you wondering what it looks like without them.
Well here it is.
I showed this to the people I brainstormed with in Discord and we decided to go with the more complicated version because it looks better lol.
This is one of the final versions.
It says: "Hello, my name is Kiwi Cult. I made this script after reading a fanfic called Terrible, But Great written by Isalise the loml on Archive Of Our Own."
Now, to talk about some of the (boring) logistics.
It is read from left to right, top to bottom.
Every separate combination of squiggles you see above is a separate word. Every word is made up of a starting character, one or more letter characters and an ending character.
The very first character you see in the top left corner, with the three petal looking thingies, is a silent starting character that indicates the start of a sentence. Not word: sentence. The end of the character, that little circle thingy, is a comma. So, the first combination says: "Hello,".
Then, the second combination starts with a kind of hook going down and right. This is also a silent character and more meant as an interpunction, that's why you don't pronounce it. It's kind of just a way to start the word when there isn't anything special about it (aka it's not the start of a sentence, a name, an exclamation or a question. But every character is special in its own right🥲). The same kind of hook can be found at the bottom of the combination, except going up. It has the same use, basically just a way to end the word when there isn't anything special about it. Now, you might ask: why does it go right and not left?
We talked about this a while, because I wanted the direction to have some kind of meaning. We wondered about gender, tone, blah blah all kinds of complicated things but in the end I just wanted this script to be writable so I chose to have proficient writers in Parseltongue make their hooks go left and beginners have their hooks go right.
Now, you might notice that I end my words with a hook going right. That is because I don't see myself as a pro in writing in Parselscript okay? It's hard!😭💀
Now, other than the character indicating the start of a sentence, the circle, and the simple hook, there are a few other characters to start or end a combination (don't worry I'll show them all to you at the end, you won't have to use your imagination for long).
We have a character to indicate a name. Now, the rule is: name indicator over start of sentence indicator. So, if you start a sentence with a name, you'll use the symbol to indicate a name, NOT BOTH. (That's not even possible but I don't even want to see you try and butcher my child).
There is a character to indicate a sentence that would usually be followed by an exclamation mark (!), but at the start of the sentence. Then you’d end the exclamated sentence with a period.
The same goes for a question mark (?): put it at the start of a question, not the end. Again, it wouldn't even be possible to use it at the end of a combination but I DON'T EVEN WANNA SEE YOU TRY.
Finally we have a period (.), which looks a bit like a flower with four petals. You do use this one at the end of a word, and it is always followed by a start of sentence indicator or a name indicator. I know people are rejecting capitals these days in their typing but I don't wanna see it. If you start a word after a period with a hook I will find you.
If a sentence starts with a name that is also a question or exclamation you’d use the question/exclamation mark above the name indicator, otherwise it would take away a vital part of the sentence while a name can still be read even if it doesn’t have its indicator.
So, to put it all next to each other, the symbols we have are: -start of sentence indicator -name indicator -exclamation mark (!) -question mark (?) -period (.) -hook (direction depends on efficiency) -comma (,) (direction depends on efficiency)
I didn't make adjusted characters to indicate a capital letter like we do in the Latin alphabet, meaning that the only things you can kind of 'capitalise' are the start of a sentence and the start of a name.
It is also slightly phonetic. Emphasis on slightly. I made separate characters for almost all letters in the Latin alphabet, so you can just write your word normally with Parselscript characters. The only difference is that I made only one character for the 'f/v' sounds and that there is no 'c' character. If a word has a 'c' in it, you'll have to use the character for a 'k' or an 's'. Also a ‘q’ can be made with ‘k’ and ‘w’ etc.
A few examples: -character=karakter -parselscript=parselskript -crazy=krazy -science=siense
-quiz=kwuiz
I know it looks a bit confusing, but I trust you guys' ability to read context clues and figure out what someone means when you try to decipher Parselscript.
Now, for a word like 'phonetic' or 'decipher' I don't really care whether you use the separate characters for 'p' and 'h' or just the one for the 'f/v' sound. You do you.
I also don’t use any double letters because they basically sound the same and it looks ugly but if you want to use double symbols feel free.
I also made some numbers that do not look like they fit with the rest of the script but I promise you that's just because you're not used to it yet. Our own numbers don't belong with our alphabet either because we nicked them from the Arabs (I think, don't quote me on this) but we don’t notice that either.
Tadah. (Yes I know it’s out of order I told you this was gonna be chaotic af)
Other than that, feel free to ask me questions if I've forgotten anything or if you're wondering about anything. I can't guarantee that I have a good answer because I might not even have thought about it myself, but I can always try to come up with something. I am one person, I'm afraid I haven't been able to take everything about a script into consideration.
Now, without further ado; here is the key.
No, your eyes didn't deceive you: there are two versions. The first has a bit more loose squiggles than the second one. I realised that when I was writing physically, the second version was much nicer to write, so it is kind of like Simplified Parselscript. I haven't decided yet if I'm gonna put some lore behind it or not yet. But I included the og one if you're a tryhard and wanna take it on.
Now, if you're gonna start writing it yourself, here is the stroke order.
I tried to make it as clear as possible but please ask me if you're confused on anything.
Red is the starting point of the whole symbol, the arrows indicate the direction to go in, x marks the start of the small extra's.
Now, I'd also recommend writing on some type of paper with vertical lines like this if you're gonna do it physically.
You can just turn a paper with normal, horizontal lines a quarter to get vertical lines. Also, do NOT write in between the lines. They are meant to help you keep the start and ending on the same line so you don't start going into crazy directions while writing. So, start your sentence symbol or hook or whatever in the middle of the line and try to keep coming back to that vertical line after every letter. As you gain more proficiency you'll probably go straight into the next letter without going back to the line all the time but I think this is a good starting point.
I also recommend writing with a fountain pen or something else that flows well because it’s easier to write that way.
Here is another rough draft I made on physical paper to get a feel for it. As you can see this draft had a lot more different starting characters and ending characters so just ignore that. Hope this motivates you a bit or smth.
Lmk if you want me to post a video of me writing in this Parselscript.
Also please let me know if you know of someone else who's also made a Parselscript because I tried to look for it on Tumblr and Twitter etc but I couldn't find anything.
I also feel like there’s a big mistake I made that I realised the last time I worked on this script but I’ve forgotten it now so if you find out please comment or dm or anything💀
Also feel free to use in your own fic, tho a little tiny shoutout in the a/n would be nice :) I’m @/kiwi_cult on Ao3, @/slvtr_ on Wattpad, @/kiwi cult on ff.net, @/slvtr.1 on TikTok and @/.slvtr on Discord.

Secrets of the Darkest Art: How to Make a Horcrux
So I saw many theories regarding how to make a Horcrux, but none of them really made perfect sense to me, so I decided to give it a crack myself as part of my mission to understand Lord Voldemort/Tom Marvolo Riddle (Which I think I did, big post coming about that at some point, this is but another piece of that puzzle of a man)
So this is my reverse engineering of a ritual to create Horcruxes based on book evidence, my knowledge of real-world alchemy, real-world ancient Greek cults and rituals and linguistic analysis.
Okay, so @twinsoulsentwined requested the full detailed process on how to make a Horcrux very nicely, so I'll add it here. This is less of a theory and more in the realm of headcanon and speculation on my part, and mostly for fic purposes but the full instructions from my notes are under the cut:
Note: I don't speak Ancient Greek and I'm not fluent in reading Ancient Greek. This is my attempt with an Ancient Greek Dictionary, so the grammar and translations might be off.
Step 1 - Life and Blood
Get access to a recently deceased human and extract their Mercury (spirit).
To do so, use the spell: “διεμμένω” - “diemmino”, to stop the spirit from slipping away.
Use the spell: “ὀχυρότης παστή αἰών φλόξ” - “ocherio pasti aion phlox” to strengthen a container to allow it to hold pure divine fire.
Then take a jar and use the spell: “ἀκράτεια αἰών φλόξ” - “akrateia aiona phloxia”, call the spirit to you and seal the jar. The spell should give the spirit a red, golden glow like a living fire.
Submerge the retrieved spirit with your own blood on a new moon (life and vitality).
Take the container with the living fire of life and add 7 drops of your blood to it.
place the container down in a bowl of water and place a charm (metal amulate, preferably silver) with the following phrase: “αἰών φλόξ καί αἷμα ὁμοφροσύνη” - “aion phlox kai aima omophrosune” - life fire and blood in unity of body and mind
Leave the container and charm on the night of a new moon for seven hours and it shall be ready.
Step 2 - Water of Fire
To complete the cycle of death and rebirth you’ll need the Phlegeton Water potion to return you to life at the end of the cycle.
As you brew the potion, it must be brewed in a dark room, preferably underground to remind as much of the underworld as possible.
While brewing the potion one must be in the mindset of the Phlegeton, must be willing to go through agony to achieve eternal life and imbue these thoughts in their potion.
List of Ingredients (~140g):
Dittany leaves (5g)
Dittany leaf juice (12g)
Dragon Blood (7g)
Dragon Liver (x1)
Rue (5g)
Valerian Root (x1)
Valerian flower petals (5g)
Mint leaves (7g)
Mint juice (12g)
Lavender root (x1)
Saffron spice (7g)
Hyacinth flower juice (12g)
Golden crocus flower juice (12g)
Pomegranate Juice (7g)
Pomegranate oil (7g)
Ashwinder eggs (x3)
Ashwinder venom (7g)
Ashwinder fangs (x21)
The Brewing Process:
Mix the Hyacinth Juice, Golden Crocus Juice, and Pomegranate Juice in a separate bowl.
Place in the bowl a golden thread that will be the Moriai Thread later in the ritual.
let the bowl set for 7 hours under the sun and then remove the Moriai Thread.
Fill a caldron (iron, size 2 -283g) with 140g of water over a low fire.
Crush Dittany Leaves, Rue, and Valerian Petals with a mortar and pestle to a fine powder.
Once the water reaches boiling temperature, add the plant leaves powder to the water along with 3g of the Dragon Blood
Mix 3 times clockwise.
Crush Mint Leaves and Saffron Spice with a mortar and pestle to a fine powder.
Add the powder along with 4g of the Dragon Blood into the caldron.
Mix 3 times clockwise.
Let simmer for 3 hours.
Burn Ashwinder fangs, Lavender Root, and Dragon Liver separately to receive 3 fine light grey powders.
Mix the powders into the brew after shimmering time is over in the order of ingredients mentioned above.
Mix 1 time counterclockwise after every powder addition.
Add the Mint Juice and the Dittany Juice.
Mix 1 time clockwise.
Let simmer for 3 hours.
Crack open the Ashwinder Egg and add the liquid inside to the mix.
Mix 1 time counterclockwise.
Add the Hyacinth Juice, Golden Crocus Juice, and Pomegranate Juice prepared earlier.
Mix 3 times clockwise.
Burn the Ashwinder Eggshells to retrieve a hot white, golden powder.
Mix the received powder with the Pomegranate Oil in a separate bowl to a fine mixture.
Add the bowl to the mix.
Mix 7 times counterclockwise.
Let simmer for 7 hours.
Add the Ashwinder Venom to the potion.
Mix 7 times counterclockwise
Step 3 - The Ritual Preparation
Set up a circle so none of the components may escape the ritual space and so the ritual will not be interfered with.
The circle shall have six letters written: Γ (foundation, soul) - Δ (threshold, change) - Θ (recovery) - Α (life) - Ξ (unity, binding) - Θ (time) in this order.
The circle and letters should be drawn in your blood.
The rest of the stages should take place within the circle. Make sure the Life Essence container is within the circle.
Make sure the item you desire will hold the Horcrux will be in the circle with you as well.
Use the same spell (”akrateia aiona phloxia”) to coax the life source out of its container and into the Horcrux.
Step 4 - Death and Rebirth
To create a thread of your soul to tie to the ritual you must die figuratively. Go through death to return stronger from the underworld.
To create this death, one must open their wrists on both arms and angle them upwards, holding a Moriai Thread (prepared earlier) in their hands that will act as their life thread.
Write the letter Σ (splitting, end) in blood on both your wrists.
Cast the spell:
εἰμί πυρίπαις καίme Τερπιάδης ἐκδιψάω καί θνήσκω ἀποτέμνω πηνοειδής αἰών ἐπίληψις ψυχορραγέω ζαφλεγής
Pronounced:
Eimi puripais kai teriades Ekdisao kai thnesko apotemno penoeides Epilesis Suchorageo zaphleges
5. And cut the thread of life. It will hurt as you feel fire cut through your soul to separate the sulfur from itself.
6. Once you feel like death has reached you and your soul is separated you should heal your soul and finish the cycle, bringing you out of death and back to life. Cast the spell:
παραδίδωμι δαλερός διυδατίζω Φλεγέθων ῥοή ψυχοσσόος καί ἀναποφέρω ἀπέκ καταγαΐδιοι
Pronounced:
Paradidomi daleros diudatizo phlegethon roe Suchossoos kai anapophero apek katagaidioi
7. And drink the Phlegethon Water immediately afterwards.
8. After the pain subsides you will feel healthier than before, stronger than before and you’ll have an additional thread of sulfur in your chest to be pulled out and placed into the Horcrux.
9. Use the spell: “ἀγινέω θυμόμαντις” - ”aginio thumantis” to lead the soul thread into the same Horcrux quickly.
10. Most times the spell isn’t necessary because the separated soul thread should bind itself to the closest, brightest Life Essence of its own.
11. The Life Essence should be powerful enough to, on its own, create a rudimentary connection between the soul thread and the Horcrux. But this connection may be unstable and unpredictable, so be warned of leaving it as such.
Step 5 - Oath of Life
Swear the oath of life to finalise the bound between you, the horcrux and the soul thread together to ward of death.
Pronounced:
Emautou hexorkou diamekune lipopnoe prokalizomai moros, Diomnumi efesos kai lissanios aima kai ieron, horkos kataproixomai aleximoros as aperotos, Eipote aganos, epimueiromai thumophoneo kai loigos, Diomnumi
The spell: “ἄλκαρ ὅρκος συντελέθω θυμόμαντις” - “alkario horcus sutlethio thumavis” is to be then cast on the new Horcrux to protect and safeguard it. The spell will only work on an item with a soul bound to it by oath. The incantation is too be accompanied by painting Ρ (resistance), Θ (recovery), Ξ (unity) in your blood on the item.
“ΡΘΞ” (”rox”) means breach, or breaking and would stop it from happening to the Horcrux.
