I think the recurring genre of question that drives me craziest on the BumbleKast is the extremely literal ones about how different Sonic multiverses from defunct tie-in media connect to each other. Like, the Archie Sonic multiverse HAS to somehow contain the game multiverse and the Sonic Boom multiverse and the IDW multiverse and everything else, CANONICALLY. There has to be a scientific explanation for how they all tie together so we can pretend that the Archieverse is technically still ongoing. The IDW world has to canonically be accessible via the Cosmic Interstate or something because of some old factoid about how the Archie multiverse contained all versions of Sonic. Like people wanna pull some Tommy Westphall Universe shit on the Sonic canon, without realizing that Dwayne McDuffie came up with that hypothesis specifically to illustrate why people shouldn't worry too much about crossover continuity
Like. Buddy. That's not how any of this works. It's all made up. It's not real. What matters is what happens in the stories, and if you don't see two Sonic universes interact in an actual story then there is no meaningful connection. They're just separate stories. On top of that they literally legally cannot tie anything back to the Archieverse anymore, so anything established in that comic has no bearing on new stories. It's just a headcanon at that point. And you don't need Ian's permission to have a headcanon
Well, the fact that multiverses are created by choices starting by a prime universe, implies there's multiples multiverse with multiple primes universes, each who are different. One where prime is X, one where prime is Y, et cætera, et cætera... Then you have to take in account the fact that multiversal events like travels across universes can be a thing, creating EVEN MORE multiverses, and then maybe someone travel from one multiverse to another, making EVEN MORE...
So by the very concept of multiverse, canonically Archie's multiverse is still going even if it is written off as "dead". Just in its own corner of the infinite^N.
And yes, this is all made up, at least in our world. So what ? The thought experiment is no less interesting. How does one event correlate to another ? Can we explain how this phenomenon works ?
I always hear people say "don't overthink things", and each time I think "last time we did that it was the era of obscurantism". Should we had never questioned why the sun rises ? Does Descartes should have never doubted existence in its entirety ? Yes, there should be limits to us overthinking things : the existence of god is a perfect example ; trying to prove it will never be possible unless he send out a bloody-ass angel, it is a question of faith or lack of it.
But we're far from an existential dread about an higher force, here it's just fans thinking out their headcanons, and asking what one of the writers think of it. If you wishes for mindless fun and "don't worry about it", good. Same with if you wish for overthinking fun. Neither should be imposed nor denigrated.
