Amber hails from the Fiore region where she passed her Ranger exam with flying colors. She travels the different regions’ safaris for her job, offering her services to those in need along the way.

She’s had trouble being taken seriously in the past due to her “totally not a bad alias” name (and yes, that is the name on her birth certificate). Amber tends to over-correct by being a little too gun-ho about whichever situation she finds herself in.

Amber once beat the Summerland capture challenge high score trying to catch a Wailmer, and sat at 7200 until another ranger used it to catch a Gyarados.

As a rule of thumb, this blog considers an “invasive species” to be a Pokémon that has to be traded into a game/region and can’t be found naturally in the wild. The Pokémon world has a somewhat complex relationship with invasive species. Since trading across the regions is commonplace, one must assume that some form of documentation is required for registration purposes. With some games blocking the trade of certain Pokémon due to not having them in the National Dex, those particular species will be considered illegal in all forms that region.

So, how does the Pokémon world handle invasive species? The Ranger Union. Working closely with the regional Leagues on this front, Rangers are called in to capture and relocate an invasive Pokémon. Safaris come into play here, as most Pokémon will be released to the Safari in their native regions. In cases where a Pokémon can’t be released to the wild, they will often go to rescue or ambassador programs.

“So, one of my Pokemon is…… particularly aggressive– not like rabid or anything.” Probably. Buddy preens at his heels. “And a few others are shy and scared of everything. So, you know, they like to depend on mister bite-a-face-off if anything goes wrong, but I wanna teach them to be sort of….independent. Hold their own, at the very least. I’ll admit I’ve babied them a little, but… you know, I don’t want to coddle them so hard they get pushed around if Buddy– uh, if the strong one ain’t around for them, you know?”

Legally she’d be obliged to look into it if it was probably rabies.

“That can be a challenge. Especially if the stronger one tends to take charge in a battle. Is there some way to keep them separate? I wouldn’t go so far as to say you’d need a Poké Ball or anything, but it should help the ones if they’re able to go up against something small that can’t really hurt them and see it’s mostly them being too in their own head.”

    As fun as freeloading had been before she’d had any real responsibility, asking anyone for anything now was…no, humiliating was the only word for it. Ruolan was loathe to prostrate herself and ask for anything, but her kingdom badly needed it, and this Ranger Union seemed like it was qualified enough to offer it.

     So here she stood, nervously smoothing the folds from her nicest kimono. She’d arranged to meet with the representative in the garden outside of the new palace - the building itself was still half-finished, but she hoped that whoever was coming would at least see and understand that they were trying to do better.

     Spotting the woman approaching, Ruolan waved to her, her free hand resting on Tsubaki’s neck. The Scolipede huffed and twined herself around her partner, giving the stranger a sidelong glance.

    “Hello there! You’re from the Ranger’s Union, right?”

Man, they weren’t kidding when they said this place was badly in need of help. Half-constructed buildings stood along streets barren of anything that would have once given the city a life of its own. Amber saw a few Pokémon here and there, but they were few and far between and not straying far from the people they were with.

It took some struggling with the hand-drawn map, and reluctant help from people she suspected would rather have nothing to do with her being there, but she was eventually able to make her way to where she needed to be.

Woah, she’s hot.

“That’s me,” she cleared her throat when it came out too low and repeated, “that’s me! Amber Battle, at your service. You’re Ruolan?”

This was bar none the strangest assignment Amber had ever been sent on. Yes, Rangers were intended to be able to travel. Yes, that included internationally. Still, they were usually prepped on where the Union sent them. Part of passing into a higher rank required learning about the different regions of the world.

No one—no one—had told her there was an island stuck in the sengoku period. She was friends with people at rank ten! They would have told her about the sengoku island!

According to the files passed on along with her new assignment, one of the kingdoms (yes, kingdoms) was in need of help rebuilding. The bigwig in charge of the region had visited one of the places Amber knew about, and during that visit had learned of the Ranger Union.

Poké Balls hadn’t been introduced there yet, because they were stuck in the sengoku period, and the Capture Stylers appeared to have made a good impression.

Naturally. They were the best.

So because the one kingdom needed the help, and the Union wanted to show off the superiority of the Stylers, Amber was on her way to sengoku island. Chrysalia, to be specific. To meet its warlord, because of course they had those.

I just know in my heart of hearts that the educational section of BDG’s Perfect Pokérap exists in the Pokémon world and is their version of the “this is your brain on drugs” ad in terms of cultural ubiquity. It’s preformed by guest speakers at school assemblies and other conventions.

— “What, nine thou–” Kyurem bites his tongue and face palms, hard. No no, this had to be a trap. He groans in frustration. “Well whatever that means, I do hope you intend to keep it between us, and only us. I would not appreciate a human attempting to blackmail me again.”

He slides his hand over the rim of his hat and pulls it down, the shadow it cast over his face darkening as he glares at her. “Like I said before, that was not my fault. Who you should really be worried about are those bastards from Plasma. Before them I was doing just fine to the point the general populace forgot I even existed.”

Amber offers a shrug. “Shouldn’t be a problem since you don’t seem to be one. Not to show my entire hand but I don’t think I could use my tech much to stop you, so.” Hold on. Did Stylers work on people? Human people?

“Woah, hold up. Plasma Plasma?” Amber looks the man up and down. Her Styler was one thing, how did Plasma figure out he was of interest? “Man, that.... Glad you’re out walking okay, in that case.”
