‘Now I get a chance to show what an administrative genius I am. Gilan’s new fief adjoins the north-eastern border of Redmont. In fact, Castle Whitby is less than ten kilometres from the border.’ He raised a hand to still Will’s instant question. ‘Yes, yes. I know, Whitby is an important fief too. So that’s why, if you agree to all this, Alun will base himself at Whitby rather than Castle Araluen. He can still attend to paperwork and administration for me and he’ll be on hand if you and Halt are called away. In such a case, Gilan moves into Redmont Fief—’
‘Which he is familiar with anyway,’ Will interrupted.
‘Exactly. He served his apprenticeship there, after all. Then Alun can resume temporary duty as Ranger of Whitby. And, of course, young Clarke will take your place at Seacliff. Didn’t I say I’m a genius?’

crowley acts like he’s a genius working out logistics but we all know that he sits in his office, at his most deranged, to make it work
this is also me two hours deep into the history of mining in the northwest of england for a fic that does NOT want to get outlined. i get it crowley. i do.
Farrel: I've been waiting to ask how living with Halt is, Will. Surprised you haven't run already; we all thought Gilan was a fluke.
Crowley: Let's not be hasty. There's still two years left.
So many characters should be permanently disabled in multiple ways or AT THE VERY LEAST have severe chronic pain but everyoens a coward so no one writes the effects of the injuries they inflict </3
‘What are you doing?’ Berwick hissed. He hadn’t seen Farrel lose his balance and, turning quickly, it seemed to him that his companion had simply hurled their prisoner headlong down the staircase.

I think it's so interesting how Berrigan is credited as being one of the biggest helps in driving the outsiders out of Araluen. He's undoubtedly one of the most charismatic among the Rangers, if not the most.
And then we have Tennyson, whose whole thing is how persuasive he is and how people flock to his banner largely due to his silver tongue. And yet he and Berrigan are complete foils of each other. It makes me wonder if Berrigan had anything to do with convincing Araluens that Tennyson was a fraud and warning them not to follow him.
It definitely draws some fun parallels.
Turns out it wasn't Tennyson leading them at that time (my bad) but I assume their then-leader was very similar to Tennyson so I feel like my point still stands. Possibly.

Crowley, to Baron Arald: I'm telling you, my team is competant.
Jurgen, running in: Crowley! Leander put milk in his coffee and Halt's about to murder him!
One thing I love about the Early Years (particularly the first, though also the second) is that it’s far more Ranger-centered than the main series. Like, Will’s an apprentice Ranger and then a Ranger, but he deals with external threats, with barely any other Ranger characters beside Halt and Gilan or Crowley.
The Early Years is really the first time we see a full GROUP of these deadly, sarcastic, and coffee-addicted guys go head-to-head with the enemy on their own and Iabsolutely love it.
Like, I was thinking it would be rather hard to include a lot of Rangers and not have them all be the same character. And sure, some of them don’t have many (or any) physical description, but they’re all unique and I love them.
“I suppose a jongleur and a Skandian don’t make the best pair,” Berrigan muttered after a moment.
“Even worse if they’re a Ranger,” Farrel added lightly.
Will joined them cautiously.
(I make myself laugh)
i finally posted the thing that this was in. good GRIEF that took way too long 😭😭
crowley: be careful, though
samdash: aren't i always?
berwick: no, i think the word for how you usually are is 'reckless'
“Coffee?”
Gilan glances up at Samdash before shaking his head. Samdash raises a brow. “What if I added honey?”
Somehow, the mere mention of the sweet substance turns his stomach. Halt’s favourite. “Not thirsty.”
“As if that has anything to do with it.”
Gilan tries a smile. Even he can tell it’s pathetic.
Samdash shoves his head lightly. “Moping won’t bring them back any sooner, you know. If anything, all this is probably slowing them down.”
“I’ll have that coffee after all,” Gilan mutters and reaches for the mug, if only to be left alone.
Samdash swipes the mug away. “This one’s mine.” He takes a deep draft to prove it.
Gilan tries very, very hard not to throttle him.
Berrigan hours again. Thinking about how rebelling against Morgarath really only bought him a little more time as a Ranger in the end. He's probably the only Ranger that had to give up his Oakleaf twice.
This feels very TEY coded. “Born young and wild / don’t let them cut your tail” makes me think of the renegades being the Real Deal (having had the Ranger training — thus being “born young and wild”) while Morgarath’s men preen about in an insulting imitation. And “don’t let them cut your tail” is very much the Rangers refusing to let them get away with this plot without any pushback. The phrasing of cut your tail also feels like them talking about the false Rangers taking their oak-leaves — cutting their ties to the Corps.
Also — “and their cloaks of justice are only cloaks, after all.” !!! it’s just so perfect
