Romance?? That doesn’t sound like protecting Queen and Country so I want no part in that
Lupin almost felt sorry for Leonhardt’s soldiers - he was sure that the Bumblebee captain was a good, good man, and held the soldier’s highest respects, but when it came to being blinded by his emotions - in this case, blinded by fury over a makeshift refrigerator, he tended to get them all in whacky situations.
Most of those instances were caused because of Lupin, mind you, but that didn’t mean he couldn’t feel sympathy for how zealous their captain could be causing some soldiers to be left on the sidelines doing crowd control - he could just hear their voices as he ran alongside Leonhardt,
‘We’re sorry ma'am, we’re undergoing a… rescue mission-“
”– I assure you, our captain knows what he’s doing most of the time-“
”– By any chance do you know the closest trash bin in town I’d really like to throw myself in it–“
Some of the soldiers that actually stuck by them constantly glancing at the thief running so leisurely next to the captain were trying to reason with him, only to be met with failure. He could tell that the soldiers had no idea what to do - they had their orders, to find a running refrigerator, yet one of the guard’s biggest wanted criminals was running alongside their captain without a care in the world. Do they even dare attempt to capture him without the order?
The stirring confusion only amused the thief even further. All in a day’s work, really.
However, he noticed they - and by they he really meant the Guard Captain - was nearing a wall and he slowed his jogging, watching the soldiers do so as well casting lingering looks at both their Captain and at Lupin, and he could just see one soldier’s failure of a attempt to warn his commanding officer that there was a –
He saw before he heard the rather loud collision against the wall, idly wondering if Leonhardt was so consumed with his fury that he failed to see a wall approaching him. It was both amusing and interesting at once, and he merely cleared his throat and nodded jokingly at 'his captain’s’ command, waving to the officers who looked at the scene with astonishment and began jogging next to him once more,
"Captain, sir!! While you were preoccupied I could of sworn I saw our target make a heavy turn left!” Of course, he saw no such thing, as it was a fabrication, but he didn’t mention that, “That Thief has got some dashing abilities if he managed to scare your refrigerator enough to cause it running that fast!!! Do you have a plan, sir?! I await further orders!”
He could just hear the collective sighs from the few soldiers that actually were staying around. They probably were wondering if they would get a raise from this silly adventure.
One can assume this captain really could win an award for loyalty and determination, at least he’ll never be question for his devotion to the Queen! Even if his typical appearance record isn’t perfect, he’s as dedicated as they come, and as soon as he gets this runaway icebox, he’s going to make sure to get Lupin behind bars too. That’s his life goal at this point! Well, secondary life goal, because his life’s duty is all for Her Majesty. Be good enough… do enough… his honor is only part of hers, she’s the world to the nation… And this fridge is really putting a damper in everything!
He doesn’t hear a single bit of the soldiers’ words and complaints. He’s too focused, so at least he has such a goal in mind. Then again, though his mind doesn’t wander to what his worst nightmare would be in this moment, he supposes it would be two Lupins. One is by far a hassle, but two. No, no, only in the worst of his dreams, a mythical tale that would never happen. Not in this universe, at least.
The soldiers likely feel like they should just be standing off to the side, or pursuing behind their captain with some sort of bags with eye holes upon their heads. Or perhaps they could make friends with the rubbish on the floor, or the pails the “fridge” mess never made it to. It wouldn’t be so difficult, right? One is semi-apologetically off to the side napping, another is making sure a little girl doesn’t cry from watch the captain’s impact. Orders are orders though, and one whispers to Lupin.
“We won’t touch you until the order is given, but I’m sure our captain’s fancy is far too focused on what’s not there.”
It’s also a sigh of disappointment and confusion, with Leonhardt still bolting at an astounding, increasing speed, the collision only deterring him for brief moments, before he’s back to moving once more. The ‘soldier’s’ observation causes him to think for just a moment, before he shouts, “A third of you keep straight. Another third, go around and cut it off that way. The rest of you, left with me!”
Of course, he’s not paying attention to how many soldiers he has left, nor does he really know how many he’ll have alongside him once it’s over. The fridge will be caught, and then Lupin soon after! How dare that fiend send the refrigerator running with his obtrusive and dastardly actions!
He veers sharply left, seeing the occasional spread of the food, so he must be getting close. He keeps full of determination and honor, of understanding that he is good enough for his spot because it’s his! And when he reaches a further clearing, he finds himself face to face, or rather distant buddies, with a distinct pile of wasted food. Absolutely dreadful! Not only is it a way to possibly spread illness, it’s clear the fridge had not been such a strong runner as to keep its stomach intact. Hardly fitting for a royal ice box, the shame!
“Do you see it anymore, soldiers?” His voice booms. Is he standing near its release, or its tragic remains? And he still has yet to notice that one of the soldiers amongst his ranks is Lupin, but perhaps his guise skills are just that top-notch.

Cardia bowed before Leonhardt slowly, looking around at his troops with a scrutinous gaze. “What are you here for?” She questioned, standing tall amidst the sea of yellow. React to Dangerous Situations, Chapter Three, Point Seventeen, she recited in her head. When danger surrounds you, do not cower in fear. Stand with determination as if nothing will bring you down.
Cardia fought to keep her glove on as her mind told her to take it off. All of the research notes that her father left for her (or perhaps left accidentally) reverberated in her mind, reminding her that the poison she wielded could protect her from danger. The thoughts of her father fought the thoughts of her experiences, which told her that showing her poison to the men in yellow could make them hate her and want to hurt her even more so. All of those thoughts also fought her own thoughts about the matter…
I do not want to cause pain.
Cardia’s hands trembled of their own volition as the dogs at the soldiers’ feet growled at her. Don’t bite me, she attempted to say, but her mouth couldn’t open. Don’t hurt yourself. Run away. She looked back up at Leonhardt, her hands joining together at her chest as she awaited his reply. She could feel her bravado faltering with the knowledge that someone would get hurt soon.
So much for determination.
Do your job, fail not, falter not. Royal Guard’s handbook, section 1.1 - do what you must, in good faith, for Her Majesty.
Leonhardt looks down on the young woman carefully. This is not the “monster” he had been expecting and he does not know exactly how he wishes to proceed. She’s supposedly dangerous, but is it really right to barge in on one so alone? So distant? Why must the Queen request this...
“Listen, I wish not to make harm of the situation, Miss, but I must ask that you come with me,” he stands tall, arms at his side, withholding his soldiers, but watching as their dogs jump forward. The girl’s afraid - and why wouldn’t she be? Unfamiliar faces suddenly come in to take her from her home; it’s far from a regal assignment.
The dogs fall, the soldiers gasp, shift uncomfortably. “If you wish not to bring more harm, I request you accompany us to Her Majesty’s Palace.” Quite frankly, even he is frightened, but his power in the situation, the strength behind his need to be the figure head of the pact, caused him to for once not tirade completely. He commands and he gulps. This is something even he hasn’t seen, but he feels this would be an unfortunate start.
“You haven’t, have you?”
He replied, sounding way too amused, but it couldn’t be helped considering the circumstances. Leonhardt seemed way way too occupied with catching a running refrigerator that didn’t exist, zoning out the world, the weird looks, the covered eyes, the ‘let’s ignore this strange, strange guard and avoid eye contact with him’, and, his personal favorite, the fact that he was running right behind the guy he sought out to capture.
He was sure that once the guard actually regained his wits for a second, he’d strive to, and fail to, capture him as always.
But, for now, this is just another scenario added in the list of amusing events Lupin can look back on chuckling at poor Leonhardt.
“Of course you’re not!” He says this a bit louder, filled with encouragement, mirth dancing in his eyes, “I can just see your lost refrigerator, waiting for you with bated breath, wondering to itself, 'Captain, oh Captain, where art thou my Captain’?” He said that latter line in a very, very feminine voice - perfectly, of course, seeing how he is a master of impersonation, the tone sounding eerily familiar to his beloved Queen Victoria’s.
“I’m sure your refrigerator right now is running along looking for you, knowing all you want to do is help it. It’s… certainly some love story, isn’t it? I believe in you, my good man! Regain your lost refrigerator! Onwards! I support your cause completely!”
He had to clear his throat to stop the chuckle that was threatening to escape. Really, how long will it take the guard to notice who was running alongside with him?
Leonhardt can barely hear Lupin’s actual words, or in his determined fury – he chooses to ignore them. A foolhardy action, perhaps, but it is all for the honor of the Her Majesty that he can uphold. Should he have regained his wits, his focus, his logic, then he would have definitely tried to directly grab Lupin. Emphasis on the should. No, instead he calls out, in a very professional fashion, “Don’t just dally there, soldier. Assist your captain! That’s an order!”
His command belts out to both the ones he actually presides over and to Lupin himself, in a mistaken flurry of belief. Really, seriously, the goal point couldn’t be far! It’s nothing short of astounding with how the soldiers are occupying themselves simply march slowly behind or tending to retrieving some rather large items discarded in the general pathways of the wealthier citizens. Their faces display regret and concern, but there’s no way to halt the captain after his top has blown.
He slows momentarily upon hearing her voice - is he living among his proper duty? Is she truly present, or a part of his subconscious conflicts surfacing? Is he disappointing? No, he’s doing what he has to to clear the streets from a rogue danger that the deviant set up! Oh, captain, oh, captain, where art thine eyes? Look beside yourself and spot the gentleman thief you so despise jogging alongside you!
“Sir! You really must listen, we-”
And yet he’s still far gone! But it’s certain that he’s much closer to his goal. With the Queen’s image on his mind, he believes he can see that dodgy and mysterious fridge just before him, so close, if only he can reach just a bit further --
--and slam right into a wall.
Perhaps he’s seeing the Queen in his dream, in his delusions, but he’s back to running soon enough! After all, he has the encouraging words of his most loyal soldier (or so he believes) right near him! One more corner, the trail leads right around another corner!
“Soldier, right along this-a-way!” shouts he in his most powerful voice.
@ranpaarureon
Lupin was trying very, very hard not to laugh at Leonhardt’s predicament, to the point in which he didn’t know what was better - the fact that he actually fell for the bait and is now actively hunting down a refrigerator, or that he completely neglected ‘capturing’ him when he was quite literally standing right next to his soldiers.
Speaking of which, those same soldiers were looking the trail of food and their captain’s retreating figure with some concern.
“Should we go chase after the captain–”
“– What if he yells at us for getting in the way–”
“– But refrigerator’s can’t run, how are we–”
Yeah, their ongoing confusion was all too amusing to the Gentleman Thief. Ah, getting under Leonhardt’s skin was one of his favorite pastimes.
“Well, seeing as your captain isn’t here right now, I’m just going to casually go see how a crazy captain looks running down the streets of London–”
He let out a innocent whistle, finger salute, and went on his merry way to look for the bumble-bee captain. He didn’t have to look very hard, seeing how all he heard was aggravated yelling and looks of startled civilians.
“LUUUUUUUPIN!!!” He was yelling, loudly enough for one random mother to cover their child’s curious look and whisper to them to not look at the crazy man, and Lupin had to agree with that mother’s wise choice - even if Leonhardt was relatively… normal, when not messed with.
He went ahead and ran up to Leonhardt from behind, keeping his jogging in place, clearing his throat and looking as serious as he possibly could be in this situation (although he was trying rather hard not to just laugh at the poor man’s face),
“So, did you see your refrigerator yet? I’m pretty sure it was running in this general direction. My, Captain, your detective skills are top-notch!”
He can’t stand it! He absolutely can’t! Lupin gets on his final nerves, his last straws, and cuts through them all! While practically hurling himself past Lupin in what’s probably the most valiant pursuit of a “fridge” to date, he totally and professionally neglects the apprehension of who he decrees the culprit. It’s likely because he’s running as if his honor depends on making a fool of himself (again) so he’s far too distracted.
Everything is taken seriously when it comes from this dastardly fiend! Leonhardt has to protect the Queen and her status, her reputation - though he mightn’t be doing so hot in doing it justice now - is outstandingly positive, he knows. Well, some make say anger is blind - or is it?
Ah!
But the fact is Leonhardt is belting out frustration, not even halting to reassure citizens of his mental health as he takes off after the food trail. “I will catch this! I assure you that!” is all he says. It’s likely, then, that he simply doesn’t notice that Lupin’s presence is, again, right there! He’s too focused on point A, so point B becomes an after thought.
He’s trying, but burning is what the flames will be. Keep pushing, moving, knowing that there’s safety at sake! And perhaps he’s louder than he should be - is he good enough to retrieve a running “fridge?” How quickly can an ice box flee, anyhow? Should he ask someone - no, but it went in that direction, right? That’s what the advising voice said...
He’ll do it all, certainly! Probably! That’s the goal! He is the captain of the Royal Guard and he’s not here for nothing! That Lupin - he’ll pay with service for this, for sure!
“I haven’t yet, but I cannot be far now!”
He’ll get Lupin!
...So he tells himself as he, again, dashes once more.
So, just the other day I saw a refrigerator with "LONG LIVE THE QUEEN!!!!" in big magnet letters on it running down the streets of London. Did you lose your refrigerator again, Leon? You really should read a book on refrigerator care, they're very precious creatures, after all. Tsk tsk.
“How ever did it get out?!” He shouts, the concerned looks of the soldiers rather clear as their captain once again shouts from the top of his lungs. Another bout with Lupin, they presume, and leave Leonhardt to his devices. He’s a good captain, but --
-- wait.
There’s food on the ground, heavy noises in the distance. Seriously? It’s clear that Leon isn’t thrilled by his current predicament, but if he can stay focused, he can clear it before the Queen catches wind of his lack of care. The streets of London will be saved! From rogue refrigerators and from deviant ruffians like Lupin!
“Sir? Refrigerators can’t-”
“I will capture you, Lupin!”
“ i want to sleep forever. ”
“Miss, if there’s anything I can do, please allow me to assist.”
Royal guard’s handbook, section 15.12, never abandon the residents of the monarchy’s land when they are in need. To tend to the honor, as it is, of a visiting goddess (literal positions explain the statement), is nearly as powerful as his personal service to Queen. He does, works, will stand tall, listen to the words of all. He has intent, special, certain, of course - he is as understanding as he tries to be. He may be somewhat brash, but valiance is valiance comes.
I - am I good enough?
He couldn’t stop Lupin, not well enough, he can’t. Lupin avoids the chase. Strength protrudes as it feels.
“I want to sleep forever...” The goddess, their guest, matters, her voice melodic soothing, she - all - does she care?
Protect, hold, so long.
“Sometimes, as do I...” he mumbles but he soon holds a grin.
“But, Miss, people like us, cannot rest.”
Surely should his mistakes continue, he would be reduced to absolute zero, colder than the fabled smile of the Count that associates with Lupin, perhaps just as cold?
“ please stop losing your temper. ”
He chalks up his might; it’s clear as the night sky that he is burning with determination. Appearances are key for the loyal, royal knight. It’s a valiant effort; his stance beside the Queen’s very existence is his testament. Rempart Leonhardt keeps his entirety proud. He can’t let one Arsène Lupin get to him, because Queen Victoria needs him level, not a rebel. This is so in any spectrum, his life-line, inclusive of all alternatives. He can’t help be be charged at times (with reason, he might add, when i comes to his work and the one he so carefully devotes himself to.
“Let us take her majesty’s orders to the highest!” He roars, receiving back a pleasant display of returned morale. So he beams as he balls his hand into a fist and raises it. “This is our honor!”
That feels like only hours before to him, a trying-to-be patient Leonhardt tells himself as he looks between Lupin and Cardia, staring at them straight-ahead with full eye contact only mere days later. Perhaps this is where he temperament flies, glows, spins out of control.
He really does work hard, bu sometimes, he over does it all loudly, and the efforts slip but there situation, he feels, cannot be so liquid. He shakes as Lupin does nothing more than laugh.
“To the lady, I profusely apologize,” Leonhardt says calmly, but it’s all possibly pseudo-calm, a shade of his true feelings, all met with well-endowed intentions to prioritize safety, the nation, everything.
Be strong, powerful, tallest stand, booming voice, “Her Majesty requests your audience now.” He says slowly, folding his arms behind his back, facing away from the two he’s ticking but good graces are his friends. He can’t help it, looking at Lupin, such is his personal grudge. He’s so close to completely letting it go, to yelling, their last encounter ended like that as well. Merciful winds, let them rock him calm.
“Please stop losing your temper.”
Cardia speaks, firm in her looks.
“Yes, temper, temper, Leonhardt. You wouldn’t want to disgrace her Majesty, would you..?”
Lupin’s smug, amused, it’s all too easy.
Leonhardt exhales rather loudly, but manages to keep himself together for the mere moment. Cardia’s genuinely worried, for what surrounds her, for the caption, for Lupin.
“Miss, I assure you, I am completely calm. And Lupin, I will be fine.”
His words come through gritted teeth. All that stops him from lashing again is Cardia’s stunningly strong stare against his back and Victoria’s presence three rooms down the hall. He doesn’t turn back to face them; it’s not needed. For the Queen, for his duty, he indefinitely needs to, has to stay okay.
“Ahem, follow me, please.”
did you ever find your fridge
“It’s still located in it’s rightful place, I assure- wait! Lupiiin, did you dare touch it?”
QUICK! LOOK OVER THERE! THAT'S THE SIGHT OF YOUR REFRIGERATOR RUNNING!!
“…!!” He quickly turns, looking exactly where this cunning opposer had pointed. “Refrigerators cannot run… That’s not… why, you!”
Sometimes, the soldiers are concerned with his actions, but Leonhardt is reliable nonetheless, though he’s certainly in a fouler mood. “Arsène Lupin! You will be brought to justice!”
