Here is the colour code system I like to use for annotating: Pink - attitude,purpose,intent + effect on reader (I’ve only recently starting taking of note of this and I often find myself using pink tabs to mark predictions as well) Blue - key ideas (whether they be themes or general philosophies that characters have) Orange - rhetorical devices and their effect Yellow - structure/syntax (sometimes I use these to just note certain passages I really like) Green - characterization/ character development Purple - Chapter summaries & questions (I find it really helpful to stick a summary at the end of each chapter for quick reference)

Hi Carly, My boyfriend and I have started talking about moving in together. One thing we have yet to hammer out is sharing expenses. Is there an approach or way you have found helpful to split expenses with your boyfriend? For instance, groceries, do you alternate who buys them each week or no set system? Thanks!

Just based on the questions you’re asking, I think you’re already ahead of the game! Honestly, I think it depends on you guys and what works best for you as a couple and personally. I will say that I think having a system in place is the best thing to do, even if it changes over time. Start with something so that everyone’s expectation levels are set and met.

I don’t feel comfortable sharing what we do because people tend to read into everything and will jump to conclusions really no matter what I say 🙃 but also because there’s no right way to do it. Financial planning is really important as a couple and something that is super imperative for healthy relationships!!

Here’s what some of my friends do which could give you ideas of what would work for you and your partner:

– A shared bank account and each have a debit card for the account. Every month, they put money into the account based on a percentage of their salary and that’s what they pay expenses with.

– Split expenses based on income. So if he makes $50k/year and she makes $100k/year, he pays a third of expenses and she pays two thirds.

– Alternate months of paying expenses

– Divide the expenses, like she pays for groceries, he pays rent, she pays for household expenses, he pays for travel, etc.

I wear glasses. Can I manage without glasses? Well, yes, probably. I could squint a lot, constantly move up close to anything I want to see, take the bus or a taxi if I want to go anywhere. I could just accept that I’ll never be able to see eagles flying in the sky or whales jumping out of the ocean. But why? Why try so hard to manage life when I could just put on a pair of glasses? No one would ever suggest a near-sighted person should just work harder. No one would say ‘Maybe that’s just your normal’ to someone that needs glasses. They would say ‘Let’s go to the eye doctor and get you a prescription so you’re able to see again.’ You shouldn’t have to try so hard.

This is such a good analogy because nobody thinks about it like this. If you wear glasses, you literally need constant use of a medical aid to experience the world like most people do. If it were anything besides glasses, that would be considered a disability. But needing glasses is an extremely common, visible, and accepted form of disability to the point that we don’t even consider it one, we just accept that some people need glasses and that’s perfectly normal and there’s nothing wrong with needing to rely on them.

That is how all disabilities and illnesses should be seen, and how we should look at treatment for them. You have a problem, and you need help dealing with it, and there’s nothing wrong with either of those things. That’s perfectly normal and that’s okay.
