I don’t know how many of you were around for when “A Canterlot Wedding” aired, but looking back on it now, it was an absolute masterclass in how to end a season.

When the season 2 finale was first revealed, and promo images and commercials were being put out for it, all they promoted was the titular wedding. A two-parter dedicated to the marriage between two characters that, at that point, the audience hadn’t been introduced to yet. There was not even the suggestion there would be some kind of conflict or plot, just a sudden fun wedding romp, inspired by the royal wedding of Prince William and Catherine Middleton.

Going in, this was literally everything we knew.

And then the thing actually aired, and the core story was a meaningful conflict of Twilight struggling with her feelings about her older brother getting married. And someone has made threats against the capital city. And the bride is acting…strange. And Twilight’s suspicions of her damage her relationship with her brother.

And then part 1 kicks your teeth in at the last possible second by Cadance suddenly dragging a crying Twilight down in a fiery portal to hell.

Not only would this finale go on from here to give us one the best songs in any children’s show ever, “This Day Aria”, but also introduce the most iconic villain in MLP, Queen Chrysalis (VA: Kathleen Barr).

This is the finale that made a lot of reviewers that had previously dismissed MLP and the brony phenomenon suddenly switch gears and announce “okay, bronies are justified”. It was that significant. And I honestly don’t feel any cartoon show has been able to pull off something quite like this since.
