The Bo portrait that I’ve just finished drawing is an image from his song, “Comedy.” Here are some the thoughts that were running through my mind as I worked on it:
While Bo's special is technically categorized as a comedy, I didn't find it very funny. At most, I smiled and made a little "hmm" sound. But don't get me wrong— I believe it's one of, if not the best, pieces of media I've ever consumed. But it's just not that funny. Even songs like "White Woman's Instagram" and "FaceTime with my Mom (Tonight)” seemingly lighthearted numbers have a weird surrealness to them. I suppose, then, that is the entire point. The song "Funny Feeling" didn't really make sense until I listened to it many times. The song's concept is centered around that feeling when something doesn't feel quite right—it could be seen as funny, sure, but if you really think about it, it transforms into a feeling of derealization, something that he mentions towards the end of the song. I've heard many people say that "White Woman's Instagram" is outdated and an overused joke. While I agree, I think you could look at it as Bo acknowledging that fact and ironically using it to convey that feeling of derealization that he's talking about. Ultimately, I think Bo answers his question of "Should I be joking at a time like this?" The answer is yes…and no. Yes, comedy helps people get through challenging times. Yet, when comedy is used as a coping mechanism, it creates a funny and uncomfortable feeling of surrealness and causes a spiral of derealization. So, should you be joking at a time like this? Sure, why not? But will it actually be funny? I'm not so sure. Perhaps, then, the question shouldn't be "should I" but "is it possible”— is one capable of creating comedy about reality without having it be overshadowed by the miserable feeling of existentialism?
