I’ve said this before and I’ll say it again: it’s more important to know and understand fully why something is harmful than it is to drop everything deemed problematic. It’s performative and does nothing. People wonder why nobody has critical thinking skills and this is part of it because no one knows how to simousltansly critique and consume media. You need to use discernment.

What the hell happened to Mitski?

someone accused her of having kept a CHILD SLAVE in a trunk in her university dorm room when she was 19 and also leading a sex trafficking ring. the girl who made the accusation kept adding progressively more and more absurd stuff to the callout every few hours until it was this elaborate wattpad story about how mitski had war criminal parents who altered the internet to disguise her real identity and how the accuser was secretly an informant for the FBI when she was 14 and got pistol whipped in an FBI fight and just more and more stuff. mitski herself had to step in and say it wasn’t true. it was literally qanon conspiracy theory hoax tier shit.

the accuser later admitted to having made it up during a psychotic episode, and people found her reddit where months earlier, she had made numerous posts about how she regularly has episodes where she, for days, believes untrue things about being in the center of conspiracy theories. it later came out that she had never even met mitski, and was nowhere near the concert where she originally claimed said child slave abduction happened. but some people still believe it to this day and accuse anyone who points out how absolutely absurd the whole thing was of being celebrity worshippers who hate abuse victims. it’s nuts

i just read a post that uses these screenshots, so i’m gonna borrow them for here- it’s worth noting that years after this accusation happened and years after the accuser admitted that it never happened and that she was experiencing one of several psychotic episodes that led her to believe similar things, there are still people who not only believe it, but spread false accusations to others about a minorly famous singer-songwriter being an evil pedophile. there are even people who say that even though they know it didn’t happen, they still think mitski is a child sex trafficker because of it

the whole thing was just really fucked up- not only assigning so much theoretical fame and prestige to this woman that people were convinced these accusations didn’t matter or couldn’t do harm to her because she was uberfamous (and that anyone who promoted skepticism about them was being an idiot celebrity worshipper), but also the way ‘take accusations seriously and don’t dismiss them out of hand simply because you like a celebrity’ so quickly got warped into ‘refuse to apply a critical eye to anything anyone says ever and immediately accept it as fact and spread it as much as you can’.

a month after the accusations broke, she announced that she was moving out of public life and performed her last public show in years. there are people who still regularly publicly claim she’s a pedophile. people still regularly spread the unsubstantiated claim that she’s from a family of war criminals (her dad worked at an embassy.) like it’s talked about as this batshit part of tumblr history because to some degree it is, just because the levels of ridiculousness that the story took on, and the immediate fervor with which people adopted and spread it, definitely highlights some degree of mob mentality and unhingedness that you can find on tumblr, but it’s not just a funny quirky story. it’s a cautionary tale of a really fucked up thing that happened.

if we apply a naive transformation based on inflation over the past 100 years averaging out to the same overall percentage again, it should happen by about 2222 AD
