It is a constant defense that religion accounts for so much goodwill and charity in the world. Disregarding the frequent proselytizing motivations of such acts, the fact remains that religion is the chief source of oppression, misogyny, bigotry, hatred, and homophobia around the world. No amount of charitable action can pay off the evil spread across the globe by religion.

Religious people often cite god as the source of everything from our existence to morality, claiming that those things that science cannot explain are so because god is the only answer. They miss the fact that this line of reasoning has existed for centuries. When looking at the timeline of what the concept of god has represented within the lack of scientific knowledge, it has shrunk to near obscurity.

I often hear religious leaders defend the Bible, claiming that it contains the infallible word of god and asserting it contains no contradictions. No human with the capability to understand written language is able to logically argue against the hundreds of contradictions that are contained within it. This leaves the stark question… Are they unfamiliar with what is actually written or are they lying? Neither case should leave followers feeling confident in what they are told. I argue, however, that the real question is posed… Why is either allowed to be continued? Simply put- fallibility creates doubt… the single greatest enemy to religious adherence. And they know it.

It is the frequent postulation of religious apologists that proof of god as a creator of our world is in the fine tuning of conditions requisite for life on Earth… the teleological argument. I would agree that the probability of life is staggeringly small. But, as Tyson notes, the rarest of possibilities are made common by the exceptional size of our universe.

Say what you will, but basing a religion around the purported teachings of a man who considered repeatedly beating a slave for disobedience because that slave is only a piece of property, is not following a moral figure. The “times were different back then” argument fails… if a god cannot foresee the fallibility of his lessons through time, then he is not a god.

Religious people frequently claim how important faith is; how morality is weaved into the foundations of faith. They refer to it as if it is a virtue. But faith is not- it is belief without evidence… including the belief to hate, oppress, or kill others that believe differently. Faith is not morality; it is blind followership of religious commands that happen to include some morals.

Although I thoroughly enjoy the art of good debate, it is all too often that the ill-will, hatred, bigotry, and oppression spouted by religious leaders and adherents inflict more destruction against the divinity of their faiths than any argument an atheist could pose.

If god existed, science would find some degree of his existence instead of continuously replacing him with the truths of our universe.

By its very foundational approach to viewing our world, science inherently is self critical, always seeking to disprove itself in fear that its conclusions could be wrong. Religion, in contrast, consistently attempts to prove its absolute correctness, often denying irrefutable evidence to maintain doctrine.

There is an ongoing push from the American Christian agenda to re-introduce sanctioned school prayer and alternatives to evolution in the classroom. Why… respect for a wider scope of tolerance for beliefs and teachings? No. They want a captive audience of children that trust educators who would, if this was achieved, present Christian beliefs as if they are facts. Considering the significantly growing amount of abandonment of faith for non-belief, Christianity has shifted a large part of its focus from the dissenting adults to their kids.

As much as adherents may dislike it, any religious progress of moderation and tolerance has not grown from self-interest, but because of insurmountable pressure from secular advancement.

In the earliest of human belief, everything was god; no phenomenon was without supernatural explanation. Through all the ensuing years, science has come to diminish the all encompassing god belief to a scant fraction of its previous status. If god existed, scientific knowledge would increasingly prove him true, not systematically destroy him.
