Horror is a love story.
[Text ID: When I was a little girl, my cousin and I watched a hammerhead shark die agonizingly on the beach. I had nightmares about sharks for months, afterwards. Sharks in swimming pools, sharks in the bathtub, sharks that could fly and were inescapable. I shied away from deep water, but I threw myself into shark lore. I wanted desperately to know everything about them; what they ate, where they swam, if they really weren't able to swim backwards. I watched documentary after documentary, horror movie after horror movie. Shark Week became my religion; the couch was my church. I sat there, frightened and fascinated in equal measure. When you spend so much time on something, on trying to understand it, you can't help loving it a little. You can love something and still be scared of it.
There was an old European folk tale about werewolves. They would lose themselves in their beast form and kill anything, even if they didn't want to. They were terrifying. But in the story, if someone who loved them--was terrified, but loved them anyway--reached out through the fear, reached out through the monster and to the man underneath...If they reached out and called him by name, it would remind him of who he was--that he was loved--and he would be human again. So maybe that's what we're doing, when we chase what scares us. We're trying to say its name. Trying to change it into something we can love and hold onto.]
