“I think she does,” she says. “I mean, the idea of giving up your life to God and then having doubts – that’s sort of like being in a miserable arranged marriage. I found it really romantic that she was going through all this and that she still had this naughty side. She is so excited about Dracula arriving. There are links between them. He doesn’t have sex, and neither does she.”

And so to this Dracula’s sexuality. For background, Gatiss believes that there was a homoerotic dimension to Stoker’s 28 years of devoted service to his boss, the actor-manager Henry Irving, and that Irving was likely the stranger in Stoker’s crustacean-induced dream.

“The fact that he writes over and over again about the young man and the vampire women and then the old man coming in and saying, ‘This man belongs to me’, is really intriguing. I think there’s something very psychosexual going on in Stoker’s relationship with Irving. It’s all pretty unspoken, but there’s something very meaty there. In terms of how that translates into the book, it’s so hard to say, but there’s a lot of sexual excitement in it, a lot of Victorian repression translated into something else.”

“Irving is very much Dracula,” Moffat says bluntly.
