We are only as strong as we are united, as weak as we are divided.

The only word students hear uttered from a Ravenclaw during exam week (via ravenclawravings)
I don’t spend very much time in the tags, so I don’t know if someone has posted these before, but this is literally how I headcanon Snape to look and I was super pleased and surprised to see this in the Slytherin Edition of Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone.
God damn it, I need to get this
Love this illustration of him.
But still, highly skilled Legilimens? Not Occlumens? Hmmmmm.
Rowling spends a lot of time suggesting that both Dumbledore and Snape are Legilimens. Lots of “had the uncomfortable sense that he could see right through him”/”felt like he was being x-rayed” text from Harry’s POV.
I suspect it’s emphasized here instead of Occlumency because Occlumency mainly makes sense in the context of Legilimancy. I’m doing a reread (re-listen, actually, on audiobook) of POA right now and hearing Snape question Harry about his head being in Hogsmeade and question Remus about the map reads differently if you assume he’s also using Legilimancy (but can’t present it as evidence).
(And yes, love the illustration!)
It’s not that I doubt that he was a Legilimens (although I think there’s an interesting discussion to be had about his use of the spell, but that’s another story entirely), and arguably a very successful one…
…but it’s his Occlumency that makes his story. He’s only capable of tricking Voldemort because he’s an Occlumens - so it feels odd to me for the text to prioritise Legilimency out of the two when I think the other is more important…
Always the innocent are the first victims, so it has been for ages past, so it is now.

Words are, in my not-so-humble opinion, our most inexhaustible source of magic.
