This is my favorite read so far of 2025! My favorite attribute of this book is how well the characters are crafted, I felt like I truly got to know each one so well and I was sad when it ended. The magic system is intriguing with a unique take on demons, souls and witchcraft. I did feel like it was a bit slow in the beginning, but once things pick up pace, it’s uphill from there and it was an insane ride. This is my first time reading a Krystal Sutherland novel and wow!- the bar is set high.

Wow what a crazy ride this book was, I could not put it down and flew through it. Alex Finlay definitely has a new fan and I’ll be (im)patiently awaiting any books he writes in the future. I’m not much of a murder mystery person anymore because a lot of the murder mysteries I’ve read in the past felt like the same story different font, but this is definitely such a unique book and I’ve never read anything quite like it before. I love Alex Finlay’s writing style, it keeps you in suspense the entire time while simultaneously throwing so many twists and turns at you that you can’t wait to find out what happens next. I also really love how the author touches on serious topics and historical events and he does so in such a respectful way. I’m not usually one to like multi- POV or multi- timeline but it was done so well that I had absolutely no trouble following the story line or the characters. I also loved the way the characters were portrayed - especially the female characters. You learn about the character's strengths, weaknesses, mental health and the struggles they face in their day to day and they just felt like real people. The small chapters were an added bonus. I can’t say enough good things about this book and the hype on booktok is actually so well deserved.

I’m trying to think of any cons I noticed while reading, but it’s very difficult to name even one. The only “con” I can think of is that it’s multi-pov because I know some people don’t like that but it was really not a problem for me with this book at all. This is my first 5 star of 2024!

I enjoyed this book a lot. I was torn between giving it a 3.5 stars or 4 stars and I chose the latter because the concept and plot were so exceptional. I liked how both characters have very different careers from each other and you can really see how that causes conflict. It’s both their greatest strength and weakness. Each character is so well fleshed out that you feel like you’re getting to fully know and understand them. One of my favorite things about this book is the way it talks about family, inherited talents/trade, familial expectations and how one of the characters is very clearly just trying to make his father proud. It was fun and witty with plenty of twists and turns. I enjoyed the magic system and how it went in depth about the curse and how magic works. I also felt the author depicted fae fairly accurately to Celtic lore (fae are feared and respected in Irish and Scottish culture) so that was pretty interesting to see.

The pros far outweighed the cons but I do wish there was a bit more description of Scotland in general, of the land, and even the culture, I just wanted to see even more of that (I am Celtic by ancestry so maybe I’m just being picky.) I also felt like their romance was a bit rushed at the end, it switched from hatred to love very quickly with not enough time to forgive each other. Other than that, this was a really fun and interesting read!

I was scared to read this book because of some of the negative reviews I saw on here, but after reading it I’m so happy I did. It’s by no means a “perfect” book but for a debut novel that’s to be expected (and is there ever really a “perfect” book? That’s subjective.) A lot of the things the other readers disliked about this book I actually found to be some of its best attributes. My favorite thing about it is that it’s lighthearted and doesn’t take itself too seriously. A lot of the scenes are so ridiculous and humorous it had me laughing out loud and talking to the book. It’s refreshing to see such a fun, unserious and cozy vampire book as a lot of the vampire books I know and love tend to be pretty serious with a lot going on and this is easier to follow.

There were a few cons I noticed, although minor things. I did feel some things were predictable just because the foreshadowing was a bit too obvious. The romance was slightly rushed but I did like how they formed a friendship using letters. Also the moment he got mad about Cassie wearing a bikini was a little uncomy, but I kinda understand why he reacted that way as a vampire who’d been in a coma for so long (things definitely were different back then.) There were also times where physical features and world building could have been more descriptive.

If you’re a serious reader who only likes to read immaculate books with no mistakes at all this is not the book for you. But if you want something funny, quick to read with a pretty interesting plot, give it a chance:) Overall I enjoyed this book and I’m excited to see what Jenna Levine writes in the future.

My overall rating for this book is 3/5⭐️

I can see why so many people love this book but I can also see why so many people despise it. The spice scenes were immaculate, the romance was pretty well done, but almost everything else fell a bit short for me. The writing style was flat at times, the vocabulary could have been better, but I did enjoy the scenery and descriptions of the castle. The ending was quite boring in my opinion, taking me days to finish 30 pages. Overall though, this was a fun and easy read, kept me interested for 99% of the book and brought me out of a reading slump.

Okay WTF did I just read? I can’t tell whether I love this book or hate it or both. I want to give it 5/5⭐️ but also 2/5⭐️ simultaneously. It was so gruesome and yet so addictive that some of the scenes will forever be ingrained in my mind (not sure if that’s a good thing.)
