Autumn TBR 🍂🍁🎃
Normally, I don’t make any time-limited TBR lists, mostly because I’m a mood reader and often change my mind about what book I’m going to read next, but also because I don’t like to put too much pressure on myself; it may result in lack of enjoyment of reading. So, while I’m still making this autumnal book list, I’m not going to be too harsh on myself if I won’t read all of the titles.
I chose especially those books that have been standing on my shelves for a long time, but some I’ll have to borrow from a library. I won’t be reading these books in a specific order.
No. 1 The Haunting of Hill House by Shirley Jackson
This book has been on my TBR for years and after seeing it being read by my friend, I decided that I can’t wait any longer. So far I’ve only read one short story by Shirley Jackson (The Lottery, obviously), so it shall be my first adventure with this author in a longer work.
I’ve only ever read a few stories, which feature a haunted house, and so far they’ve been to my liking, so I’m really looking forward to this one, since it’s one of the best known books with that motive.
No. 2 A Collection of Short Stories by Edgar Allan Poe
This won’t be my first meeting with this author. He’s already established himself as one of my favourite writers and I cannot wait to read more of his work.
In my opinion (please, don’t kill me for this), Edgar Allan Poe has in his stories what H.P. Lovecraft lacks - a truly suspenseful atmosphere. Meanwhile, all Lovecraft manages to do is bore me half to death.
No. 3 The Flood (Blackwater series) by Michael McDowell
I’ll have to be honest with you, I was first drawn to this book solely because of the beautiful cover; of course, I first read the blurb before adding it to my TBR, but had this book an uglier cover, chances are I would’ve never picked it from the shelf at the bookstore.
This whole series is labeled as „horror” on both Goodreads and StoryGraph, so I’m a bit nervous, but all the „fantasy horror” books I’ve read so far have been only mildly scary, therefore I think I’m going to be fine.
No. 4 Don’t Let the Forest In by CG Drews
I’ve only heard great things about this book, and what’s better than a LGBT+ horror YA novel for the autumn.
Honestly, I’m surprised that this book has already been translated to Polish, considering how recently it came out… I guess the translator had an artificial friend helping them :/
No. 5 Babel, an Arcane History by R.F. Kuang
Can’t have an autumn reading list without a dark academia book! I’m ashamed of how long this has been idly standing on my shelf… and to think I’ve bought it immediately after it came out!
To be fair, it quite a chunky read, so it’s no wonder I’ve found it to be intimidating. But I think I’m finally ready.
No. 6 The Forest of Ghosts and Bones by Lisa Lueddecke
You have no idea how long this book has been standing on my shelf. The story of why I bought it is quite long, but the point is I have to read it, because I start to feel guilty every time I look at my shelves and see it there.
You should definitely check out the polish cover for this book, it’s really lovely. I hope that the atmosphere of this novel will match the illustration on the cover.
No. 7 The Crucible by Arthur Miller
I haven’t read a play in a long time, and I think this one specifically is the perfect read for Halloween season. Who knows, maybe one day I’ll get to see the play come to life on stage…
No. 8 Every Heart a Doorway/Down Among Sticks and Bones by Seanan McGuire
For those of you wandering why I’m putting those two books together: it’s not only because they’re by the same author and a part of a series; it’s also because I’m reading the polish edition, which has the two first novellas in the same tome.
I’m not gonna lie, I have some big expectations for these books. I really enjoy reading novellas, so I’m hoping to enjoy these a lot.
————————————————————————
I really hope I’ll manage to read all of these until the end of autumn. It would be the first seasonal book challenge I’d have ever completed.
I’d love to get some more autumnal suggestions! Wish everyone a fruitful reading season! 🍁☀️
If you’re looking for a fun, spooky read this fall I highly recommend Small Spaces by Katherine Arden! It’s the first in a middle grade horror series but it is so good and fun, not to mention creepy. 🎃
