I’ve been really struggling with writing recently. I have so many ideas and I want to write, but nothing really comes out well when I sit down at the computer. If I’m honest, fandom has become something of a stress trigger for me in recent months. There’s a lot of backbiting and toxicity amongst groups that I used to really enjoy being a part of, and I just can’t handle that with the health anxiety and real life problems I have going on. That’s a bit of a personal dump, but I hope you understand that it’s not that I don’t want to be writing, but it’s important for me to maintain healthy boundaries right now!
I do have the next chapter of Perversions almost entirely written; that one should hopefully be up before the end of July. I’m also in a couple small writing comps that will be posted on AO3.

I usually try to stay off of my fandom discourse soapbox, but hear my heartfelt plea: There are so many amazing short works (I’m talking under 30k) in fandom! If you usually stick to 100k+ works, please take a little breather between your next WIPs or completed works and check some of them out. Some Facts and Figures, because of who I am as a person:
As of today, 12/30/20, there are 11,997 Dramione fics on AO3 and 75% of them are complete
Only 367 of those (3%) are over 100k and only 227 (1.9%) are over 100k and complete
Only 1430 of them (11.9%) are over 30k
In order to write a 100k work in six months, a fanfic author would have to write an average of 548 words a day, or 769 words five days a week (this, of course, doesn’t include other projects, editing time, or rewrites)
The average daily word counts of professional authors varies greatly, but seems to generally land in the 500 - 2000 word range, with some prolific exceptions. Bear in mind that these are the word counts of people who write as their full time job! (Source)
The average published novel is between 80k-100k, but anything over 45k is considered novel-length
Published writers who produce a novel every year are thought to be prolific. However, in fandom, there is such an incredible demand and pressure for a high volume of words in an environment in which people are not and cannot be paid for their labor.
There are many short pieces out there that are crafted with a lot of love by incredibly skilled authors. A great deal of labor can go into writing a 10k piece, rewriting some or all of it, self-editing it perhaps 3-5 times, and then sending it off to alphas and betas for more editing. I’ve been so impressed by the absolute immersive qualities and gorgeous prose of some of the short fiction I’ve read in fandom.
If you work full-time, or even part-time, or have loved ones to care for, or have any number of the Complicating Life Factors that so many of us have, and also have a rigorous standard when it comes to the work you put out into the world, it isn’t always feasible to bang out long works. More power and so much appreciation to those who can do this (❤️❤️❤️) but it just isn’t possible for everyone. And it can be very disheartening to spend all of your free time working to put out a one-shot or a short multi-chap and see so much, “I don’t read anything incomplete or under 100k,” or “It’s pretty short, like 70k, but it’s good so it’s worth it anyway!” in forums and discussion groups. My friends, 70k is a full-ass novel!
Which is to say, go forth and shower love on all those short works now and again. Especially if you’re feeling antsy or frustrated because you’ve “run out” of long, completed works. There is nothing nicer than getting a glowing comment on a six-month, or year-old, or two-year-old one shot! And there are truly so many lovely hidden gems out there!!

I still cannot believe I was asked to write for D/Hr Advent. Thank you again to anyone who put my name in that hat. 🤯 I had a few ideas for Advent (Mall AU where Draco and Hermione are elves at the North Pole, Bletchley Park codebreakers AU) but really wanted to do an urban walking-and-talking piece just to see if I could write something that was actually readable. I particularly love what you don’t see: a broken Draco sitting in churches contemplating redemption, trying to glue himself back together and discovering his shape has changed, Hermione trying to make life and love work through sheer force of will and then learning to ease her grip, what it looks like for D&H that morning, the rest of the winter, in the spring.

Pansy x Neville, Rated E, 17.5k words complete multi-chapter
This is less about the piece itself and more about the process of creating it with @grangerdangerfics @scullymurphy and @provocative-envy I am SO proud of what the four of us built as a whole, and our time working on it was one of the very best parts of a really terrible year. 25/10, would die for this crew and also for this soft soft Neville and this vulnerable, relatable bébé Pansy having a watershed WTF moment at the threshold of adulthood.

This was my second completed short multi-chapter after A Dress with Pockets, and it was a total pleasure to write. I have a lot of feels for these two. I loved this office AU so much I wrote in it again. Also I sometimes think about how smutty this is and want to hide my face, WHAT HAVE I DONE?

Pansy x Percy, Rated T, 3k complete one-shot
This was exceptionally satisfying to write. I don’t know about anyone else but I loved watching this Pansy Parkinson lose her goddamned mind over this Percy Weasley. The absolute ache of these two. This is tied with Field Guide to North American Dragons for my favorite of the pieces I wrote in Death by Quill 2020. I grew tremendously over that competition and am deeply grateful for that experience.
One and Done
Draco x Hermione, Rated E, 35k complete multi-chapter
I know this is just a small slice of zesty Hermaco cheesecake, but it’s also probably the most Me thing I’ve written. My soul looks like this fic. Gawain Robards: a self-insert. This is my very, very favorite Draco (although he is very much adjacent to Draco from Love and Other Historical Accidents). I LOVE HIM. I love how much he loves her. I LOVE PANSY in this, I love that Pansy “Dislocated Cunt” Parkinson is the woman who loses her shit for Percy “Keep Calm and Carry On” Weasley in this AU, and for all its frivolity and spice, the scene where Pansy narrates Draco’s fantasy is structurally one of the more elegant things I’ve ever written.
Also, I’m not burning down the fandom art world, but I am SO proud of the art that sparked One and Done. I drew this from absolute scratch (this is a very art-nerdy thing to be excited about!) including that lace, and FUNNY STORY: to make it look right I had to draw and shade her bare breasts and then add the lace over her skin as a separate layer, which was a much, much spicier place than I was ever planning to go with fan art.

Page Ripped Out
Secret Pairing, Rated M, 8K, one shot written for Sing Me a Rare Spring 2020
This is honestly the piece of writing I’m most proud of. One of my favorite parts of fanfiction is fleshing out the world of canonical characters and imagining how their interpersonal relationships impact the events we see through Harry’s eyes. In this story, I really leaned into the theory that the literary villains we most revile are often humans who have been damaged by a past we don’t get to see, and to craft a believable origin story, I took over 10K worth of notes and background information that didn’t even make it into the fic haha. I had to be really precise with pronoun usage while interweaving bits of canonical details to create a bread-crumb trail until the character reveal.
How to Disappear
Dramione, 63K, Rated M, complete multi-chapter
One of my favorite tropes is when Draco has a kid with Hermione he doesn’t know about, but I wanted to know what would happen if Hermione was the one who didn’t know. Thus began my trip down the rabbit hole of magic, lovers to enemies to lovers, and angst that this story was. It was really fun to give a character almost universally despised by fandom a redemption arc of sorts, and I enjoyed getting to write the dynamic between Hermione and Draco a lot! Plus, playing with magic is always fun :)
How Thin the Line
Rowena Ravenclaw x Salazar Slytherin, 3K, Rated M, one shot written for the second round of Death by Quill: Charms
Death by Quill was the single most challenging writing experience I’ve ever undertaken, but I’m immensely grateful that I did. Like with Page Ripped Out, I wanted to fit a story into the dark, craggy parts of canon that we just don’t know much about, and so I chose to write a Chamber origin story. It’s not my strongest piece technically, but I enjoyed experimenting with fairy magic, basilisks, and legacies. If you haven’t read the other fics in the competition, go now!

Okay clearly I just want to write rare pairs all the time now lol. I have no explanation for this one, really, other than that I wanted to write something random and play with style a bit haha. It’s a bit more lyrical than what I normally write, and it definitely volleys somewhere between serious and silly. It also made me want to write a hundred more stories of stoned Theo and badass Myrtle. And somewhere down the line write a triad with stoned Theo, obliviously queer Draco, and badass Myrtle.

Neville Longbottom x Pansy Parkinson, 8K, Rated E, one shot
Okay, can I just be honest that writing these two characters scares the shit out of me? Pansy because she just has such a particular fanon voice and Neville because he’s my absolute fav (and I need more Neville in my life, so throw me any recs you have). This was a gift for a friend, and I really enjoyed writing a soft Neville who just wanted his witch back but didn’t push her into it. Something about Neville just speaks of such a strong, enduring presence, and I really tried to capture that in this fic. And even though they both intimidate the daylights out of me, I’m really happy with how this turned out.
So! That’s it. This year has been foundation rattling and confidence shaking. I posted some stuff I wish I could rewrite, but other stuff that I go back to sometimes just because I’m really proud of. I got to compete in some events that made me better, made friends with authors I really admire, and wandered a little less aimlessly down the path of my own writing journey. listen. l i s t e n. listen. kudos does not equal quality. popularity does not equal quality. i have read some “fandom classics” that i could barely fathom how boring or terrible i - personally - found them, and i have stumbled across some absolute gems that didn’t even break 100 kudos.
what is good doesn’t always get the recognition it deserves. it’s sad, but true. just because you haven’t - or possibly never take - off in fandom doesn’t mean your work isn’t astounding and beautiful, it doesn’t mean you should stop writing; it just means that a very select corner of the internet missed the diamond in the rough.
fanfiction is flooded with content, there are so many of us out there producing it these days, and having a fic that takes off is almost as much about luck as it is about talent. never let a few artificial numbers on the internet dictate to you what is and isn’t worthy writing.
additionally, you don’t have to read or enjoy fics just bcs they’re big. i cannot count the amount of times i’ve read the first paragraph of something fandom adores and immediatly exited out of it.
just… do what makes you happy. write what you wanna write, read what you wanna read. understand that while we all want recognition - and some deserve it more than others - we did not get into fanfiction for that recognition.
recognition is good, but sometimes we get all tangled up chasing it and stop enjoying writing and reading and fandom as a whole along the way. be careful of that, please, or you’ll burn yourself out.
Twenty-five years in fandom and it doesn’t get truer than this. You absolutely CANNOT predict what will be popular and what won’t. It’s due to coincidence and timing and who happens to hit reblog and yanno…it’s a mystery. Write for yourself, read for yourself, this isn’t a job.

I love how people catch the silly little details. So far everything I deliberately put in has been commented upon in some way except for one, that I know of. XD
“They were roommates”, “slice of life” is a slice of cake, hurt/comfort is a checkerboard cake and there’s a knife stabbed right into it, angst is someone’s “jam”, the pining section has pine tree shaped cookies, the vampire AU is a bloody mary, red cup is a “solo” cup, the “Add Shots” menu lists “protein” and “facial” as the top two items, and the concentrated citrus the bird-tender offers is a carton labeled “Only One Bed”.
The only thing I haven’t seen hashtagged or commented on is that the drunk sex is angsty because the relationship is “on the rocks”.

I love that y’all think tha white people in the army in WWII joined to fight the evils of the Nazi party and not because of nationalism. The US sent minorities back to Germany to be gassed and only got involved after Germany threatened us.
captain america was created by joe simon and jack kirby, two jewish second generation immigrants. you can argue about what the character has come to represent culturally today but it’s absolutely insensitive to erase what the character was supposed to represent for the creators at the time.
hell this is the image on jack kirby’s wikipedia page next to the “entry into comics” section
it was absolutely a political statement, and one that positioned america against fascism, against antisemitism, which is more than we can say for some modern media or even the orange stain running our country
I would also like to add, he was introduced, like this, while the USA was not in the war, and was selling weapons to Germany -among other things. It was a very dangerous, very unpopular statement to make at the time. People love to do the ‘punch Hitler’ thing now, but when Captain America was first released with this cover, this was an extremely controversial statement.
Captain America was created in direct response to how the USA was reacting to the war at the time as a direct call to action against injustice specifically. Created by two Jewish men who were very much affected by all of this. They specifically designed him to look like he did because that was the ““Aryan Ideal”“ as part of that statement. That is why they made him blond, blue-eyed, white, tall, and muscular. They also called him ‘Captain America’ to implicitly tie the United States to this statement. This was a metaphor of ‘The USA has to stop letting others be hurt, it’s time to step up and do something’.
It’s not only insensitive to erase that, it’s Antisemitic to call a Jewish-made character that was a political statement against antisemitism in the 1940′s by people who were fed up with watching their loved ones die while people said they ‘shouldn’t get involved’ in a massive, global genocide attempt a ‘symbol of military industrial complex imperialism and nationalism’ when he was made as a symbol of resistance and a call to fight fascism and antisemitism.
Has anyone mentioned yet that American fascists were so pissed about Captain America that some American Nazis showed up at the Marvel offices to “show what Real Americans would do to Captain America”.
