Dyed silk fiber Right after dyeing vs fully dry (2 days later) We experimented a bit with tempurature, and I'm pleased with the result. I had really not been getting the dye bath quite hot enough in the past, I think. The colors came out a bit more vibrant than usual when heating to *just* below boiling. I'd always been wary of overheating, so had been a bit too cautious I can't wait to make paper with these!
Dying Day! My mother came out to help me in the studio yesterday, and we decided to take advantage of the two person workforce and do a good sized batch of silk fiber dying! It's lovely to have help with this, as it's kind of an assembly line style project. I mixed colors while she pressed air bubbles out of the fiber and put them in to microwave to heat up. Then I rinsed them out and layed them out to dry as she pulled them out and checked the tempurature It's a nice color selection I think, for upcoming projects
Experament day! I'm playing around with the idea of taking my collages more into 3 dimensions. One issue I need to deal with though, is that it's not at all practical to frame with glass when you're piece has elements deeper that about 1/2" One possible solution is to coat them with a sealant instead of putting them behind glass, so I'm doing lots of little test pieces using different sealants and also using different collage elements to see how them work with a coating on them Today I tried acylic medium, polyurethane, and a spray on wood sealant. Next time I plan to try shellac, 2 part epoxy coating and fiberglass....I'm starting with the lower fume stuff, as it's too cold still to work outside! What's exciting to me about this is that if using a clear sealant works well, then I'm really freed up not only on depth, but also SIZE. While it's *possible* to frame pieces over my max size (40"×60"), the cost immediately becomes much much higher and choice of frame materials becomes very limited.
WIP: Cephalo-pods Remember this little octo? I feel so in love with him that I decided to keep him, so, in order to still have some little original Octopus for sale (as promised to a few customers) I decided to reuse the sketch/template to make a pair of simular ones. The thing I kinda wished I'd done differently with the first one is that it's an image that would look really neat *round*...so these guys will be! What I really want is to find 2 round frames, preferably with convex glass! They would then look very porthole like, which I'd love So I'm going to be hunting for an 8" round pair on Etsy and Ebay (new ones are VERY) expensive)

WIP: Reds on the River Over-dying The second, lighter green I made came out WAY to bright to work with the subtle greens already in this piece. Rather thsn making more paper, I decided to cut the shapes out and over-dye them. The trick here is to use a very soft brush, and pretty much soak/saturate the paper very gently rather than "brushing" the dye on. Otherwise you run the risk of scuffing up the fibers and losing much of the sheen of the paper Well see how these dry, and if the color is *still* wrong I'll give in and make another sheet
WIP: Reds on the River Most of the green has been cut, except I wound up hating the brighter green, so it is going to get an over-dye to tone it down Did I mention how fiddly this thing is? So many tiny pieces! I still need to do some of the smallest fins plus a bunch more of those little "dots" Time for a coffee break though!☕
WIP: Reds on the River Two different greens for fish heads, tails etc My salmon have a lot of fiddly little parts, so today is being spent doing tons of cutting out and assembly
WIP: Reds on the River Ok, so they have no heads, tails or fins yet, but I'm SO pleased with then colors on this big salmon piece that I had to show them off! I made 2 different green papers for the heads etc this morning, and once they dry I can start cutting out and building the details I still have one sheet of paper to make (the final layer of water) and thrn papermaking for this piece is done
Trying one of those "Art vs Artist" things... Not sure if I'm doing it right😂 Also had a rough time finding a not awful photo of myself. This one is a bit out of date, as my hair has grown back in a lot more now! I did kinda like this look though
Starting on my papers for the big salmon piece The two upper photos are the rust and the burgundy papers while still fiber The bottom left is the rust paper done and cut out...it came out too pale, so the darker version is after a rusty/orange over-dye. I do kind of like the light version, so I might dye some and leave others alone The last photo is the red. It's fine, because red dyed silk is ALWAYS gorgeous!
