it's really fucking annoying sometimes that my job is Brain because then I use too much Brain at work so by the time I'm finally done and can work on the writing that's been itching at me all day I have only a tiny fraction of Brain left

A character trait/dynamic that I'm endlessly compelled by is someone dealing with (or, like, failing to) being the child of people who were too busy being good people to have the time and attention to be good parents. This can be anywhere from 'was a public defender who gave a shit working 60 hour weeks with basically no vacations' to 'left their family behind to join the revolution/war effort and is now a universally beloved martyr-hero who saved/remade the world with their final breath' on the groundedness spectrum. The important thing is a viscerally felt but confused and ugly mess of longing, resentment, and guilt about feeling the resentment.

i've been reading husky and his white cat shizun by meatbun doesn't eat meat and y'all...it's pretty fucking brutal but also worth it? i think?

halfway through book three and i've just spent the last hour WEEPING (grief), nearly threw the book, and then wept some more (relief)...honestly a masterclass in reforming a despicable character i'm honestly in awe

but PHEW erha doesn't pull punches i've never read such a raw pov character who actually undergoes significant development and self-realization before...but the ride is ROUGH and i'm probably going to need to take a break or twelve along the way

Hua Cheng getting the equivalent of a PhD every 7 years while looking for Xie Lian sounds fucking insane, because it’s been 800 years, but it also is very real.

Like he fr stress farmed all his stats because what do you mean he runs a city, knows how to make beautiful architecture, made thousands of statues, made a temple, learnt every weapon he has, made teleportation easier —something even the Gods haven’t figured out how to do, learnt multiple forms of magic, trained a butterfly army, unearthed an ancient civilisation and taught himself the language with no Rosetta stone to work with, figured out blackmail for literally every heavenly official ever, Learnt enough about everything to challenge 33 Gods in both combat and debate.

And that’s not even counting the stuff he sped ran, like making arguably the most powerful spiritual weapon in the series, and the stuff we aren’t explicitly told, like truly he must have only calligraphy left to learn because he for sure was close to running out of everything else.

why do so many recent fantasy books only have a single non-binary person in them. everyone understands the person is non-binary there is no stumbling over pronouns or need to explain—yes, the wizard librarian we’ve all seen them—but there’s only ever One. the author cares enough to acknowledge the existence of people who fall outside of a gender binary but not enough to invest in there being like. a community. wizard gender studies. there’s just grevory the they/them librarian who sprung fully formed and fully non-binary into the magical land of fortinblargh or whatever the fuck

Shen Jiu is a cat, obviously. But this doesn't only apply to his defensive traits. He is also catlike in the way he quietly shows affection, the way he marks people as his. And no matter how he feels about Yue Qingyuan now, the man is *his*. His to despise, his to tuck away into quiet corners of his heart, his to sink his claws into. So he decorates him in the silent trappings of ownership. Whenever Yue Qi visits, Shen Jiu lights an extra stick of incense so the man walks out smelling of the bamboo house. He finds excuses to break and replace decorations around Yue Qi's home with his own. The paintings on the wall? Painted by his brush. The small, carved pair of ducks that sit on one shelf? Purchased in a huff one new year from a vendor who promised they were the perfect gift for lovers (Shen Jiu had told him that he had detected a curse on them and they needed to stay in the presence of Yue Qingyuan's qi for at least a year before it was nullified). The man's very robes? Every rip and seam had been carefully mended with green thread, including the patch sewn right over his heart from when an arrow had once nearly taken his life during a battle. Because of course, what an embarrassment to have to write all of the Peak Lord's wardrobe malfunctions on the budget? No, better to repair them himself. Like a cat, he scents the man, hides gifts around his home, and scratches him as an excuse to lick the wound.

You can't blame a dog for not noticing, really.

They are both just so supportive of the other. There's multiple times that Hua Cheng tells Xie Lian to go do what he wants and what would make him happy and he follows him in that

Xie Lian has no issues with who Hua Cheng is or his past. Hua Cheng doesn't try and downplay who he is and Xie Lian truly doesn't care. They just totally accept and love each other for who they are and I love it so much
