The paper bag in the possessive clutches of her hand was already crinkled at the top as Leona strode through the busy streets of Boralus and back to the inn she was staying at. At least that wouldn’t be for much longer. One step closer to finishing her bike but there was still quite a bit of work to be done on the fixer-upper she purchased as a birthday gift to herself. Each milestone of progress produced such a sense of euphoria within her, and not to mention the sense of accomplishment. She had struggled to read through the manuals but somehow managed to get some of the basic work done. I’ll have to ask Rennik for help sooner or later. That thought made her roll her eyes with annoyance.

Taking a turn down an alley as a shortcut to the inn, a way she had taken a dozen times now since renting a room there in exchange for bussing some tables at night. Halfway down, a creeping sensation like a snake slithering up her spine made her stop and slowly reach into the pocket of her leather jacket for her switchblade. 

“Well, well, well, what have we here? A queen, fallen from grace.” The gravelly baritone reached her ears, making the muscles in her stomach clench. She already knew who it was and who had sent him. 

Leona pivoted to face the only person who had ever held rank over her during her time in the Free Kings. One of only two people in this entire world that she was genuinely fearful of.  “Rhett,” she greeted with a wry smile that matched the ice in her sapphire hues. “A little far from the rats nest you call home, aren’t we?” 

That smile of his had made others go weak in the knees but she only saw a viper whose head needed to be severed from its body. “You know, you can take the girl out of Freehold…but you can’t take Freehold out of the girl. Can you?” Rhett stuffed his hands in his pockets as he approached her. “You’re looking good, Leo. Best I’ve seen you in fact.”

The Black Lotus shrugged indifferently, refusing to let on to how terrified she was to be in his presence. Was Emmett nearby? Did they know where Aisla was? “Cut the shit, Rhett. What are you doing here?” Rhett clicked his tongue and shook his head. “Word got out that you slipped back into Freehold a few weeks ago and didn’t bother to stop by and say hello. Unless you forgot, Emmett said not to bother coming back unless it was on your hands and knees for forgiveness. Now lucky for you… Emmett hasn’t heard anything about your little rescue mission.” So he did know. “I happened to intercept the little birdie that saw you with your overgrown mutt.” 

Leona’s nostrils flared at the implications of each word he said. Rhett very well could have been King of her former gang but he preferred to work behind the scenes, which made him far more dangerous than Emmett in her eyes. He was up to something. “What do you want?”

He started pacing in front of her, keeping his hands in his pockets. “Your boyfriend has gotten complacent. He refuses to think of the bigger picture and is happy selling to two-bit whores and pirates for the rest of his life. I see far more potential for the Free Kings, and you’re going to help me.”

“Emmett isn’t my boyfriend, Rhett and you fucking know it.” Leona spat, tightening her grip on the bag of lug nuts. “And you’re touched in the head if you think I’d ever help you.” Rhett stopped and closed the distance between them, his imposing height casting a shadow over her. His voice lowered, forcing her to listen. “Yes, you will. And here’s why… if you don’t help me push products into the hands of Boralus, I won’t bother keeping your location a secret from Emmett, nor the fact you came back without his permission.” Leona swallowed down the bunched up nerves in her throat. How was she going to explain this to Aisla? How could she keep her girlfriend out of it? “Fine. I’ll do it.”

Rhett grinned and straightened up. “I thought you’d see it my way. I’ll have a package sent to you with the updated prices. And don’t worry, you’ll get a cut of it too. I won’t let your work go entirely unrewarded.” It was hush money, that’s what it was. She was backed into a corner and couldn’t see an option out. “Later Leo.” 

She watched him disappear and once he turned the corner, she bolted in the opposite direction to the more crowded and safer route to her temporary home.

He shook his head, eyes still narrowed.

I’m not trying to do anything but make her happy, to help her realize that she’s more than what her past has painted her as. I would’ve thought you’d want to help me in that. To help her see herself in a kinder light.”

His arms fell to his sides. Rennik leaned up from where he was perched at the wall and strode over to the brunette, closing the distance.

“I can’t be the only one who suffers when she talks like she has no worth. I know you don’t care about me, but surely we can agree about this much…”

Cool as a cucumber. At least that’s the facade she put up so Rennik couldn’t see how his snarl made her spine feel as if it was encased in ice. “You can’t steal something that can’t be possessed. Least of all, Aisla. Remember that she and I grew up together. You’re not a threat, Rennik. You’re hardly a blip.”

His imposing form shadowed over her face, forcing her to tilt her head back to look up at him. He was right though. Their angel was worth more than she allowed herself to believe. Alone, there was only so much they could do to help her. But together, their potential could be magnified. “Fine then. How about a truce? Friends?” Her hand extended forward in an attempt to make amends, if only for Aisla’s benefit.
