airsLLide No. 20043: G-YMMB, Boeing 777-236 ER, British Airways, San Diego-Lindbergh Field, March 31, 2001
The British flag carrier added San Diego to its network through the merger with British Caledonian in 1988. Inititally, the carrier used BCAL's DC-10 that were already familiar with the route for the service, later switching to the Boeing 777-200ER. For quite some time, this was the sole intercontinental service from a European airline to SD. In the course of the 2010s, the destiantion became the focus of additional carriers from overseas, with airlines such as JAL Japan Airlines, Edelweiss Air, Lufthansa or KLM adding California's souternmost destination to their schedules, at least seasonally.

airsLLide No. 14267: HS-TGK, Boeing 747-4D7, Thai International, Hongkong-Kai Tak, November 25, 1997
Lingering black skies: Completing one of several daily schedules from Bangkok to Hongkong, Thai's afternoon service is flown by one of its intercontinental Boeing 747-400s during the aircraft's daytime spare hours between long range assignments. Depending on scheduling availability, the daily equipment on the route could vary between Boeing 777-200 (non ER, intra-Asian high-density cabin), Airbus A330-300 (also dense) or the more spacious, larger Boeing 747-400, with the three models providing between 294 and 324 seats.

airsLLide No. 21484: VH-EBV, Boeing 747-338, Qantas Airways, Sydney-Kingsford Smith, May 4, 2002
Featuring a stretched upper deck but no winglets, VH-EBV is easily recognised as one of Qantas' six Boeing 747-300 from the mid-1980s, the rarest version built of the popular wide-body. The six aircraft were gradually retired by Qantas between 2005 and 2010, with some of the birds spending their final years leased out to Indonesian carriers during the annual Hadj-season
