GO Fan Fiction Friday 11/7/25 - Fics with a Strong Sense of Place

One of the many things I love about Good Omens, the tv show, is its details. In particular, the set design and the shooting locations create a strong sense of place. It's a show that couldn't be set anywhere but London. In an era where Vancouver or Budapest often stands in for New York or Paris in films or on television, that's special. For this week's theme, I'll highlight some fics that I feel create a very specific setting for the story. In my mind, these are stories that could never be set anywhere else; the setting is that crucial to the tale.

I'll start with a fandom classic that may be familiar to many of you, The False and the Fair (E) by @princip1914. The story opens with some lovely description of the Appalachian region that feels familiar to those of us who have been there. The writer also gives terrific care to the characters. Aziraphale Wright belongs to the family that owns the local coal mine while Anthony Crowley is the son of a miner never able to leave his home behind. If you're a fan who has never read this story, you're in for a treat for many reasons, but its sense of place is the first thing you'll appreciate.

The next fic is set in a place completely opposite the Appalachian mountains, the New York metro area. It's Love and Solidarity (E) by @cemeteryangel725. Crowley is arrested while protesting the 2004 Republican National Convention. The lawyer who turns up to defend him is Aziraphale, his friend and first kiss from summer camp. Yeah, the setting wasn't the point of the story, but I felt like I was standing on a platform waiting for a PATH train or climbing the stairs to a lower Manhattan Street as I read. I lived for many years in the Finger Lakes region of upstate New York and appreciated a story steeped in its beautiful and underappreciated wine country. In Cayuga Blush (T) by asparkofgoodness /@thetunewillcome, you'll be introduced to interesting facts about winemaking as well as the lovely setting. The writer also did a stellar job adapting canon to their story. If you liked @sevdrag's Old Vines (E), a much-deserved fandom classic that also offers a lovely tribute to the winemakers and setting of California's Russian River Valley, you should read Cayuga Blush.

In I REALLY FUCKING LOVE YOU (M) by @thisisshiny (M), Crowley turns up kinda dead. Aziraphale tries to help him follow the clues that led him to say the stories title, in case it helps him recover himself. I can't say much without giving the story away. But I guarantee you will find yourself in places that could not be substituted for any others.

Next up, we have a setting that is more compact--not a region or a city, but a garden. It's The Tree of Life (M) by @raxacoricofallapatoriusrulez. Set in Kew Gardens, where Crowley is a staffer, Aziraphale turns up for a tour one day, not realizing it was planned as an event for children. Thus begins a slow burn romance. Much of the story takes place in the gardens, inspired by specific places. The writer includes photos of the places referenced in the story at the bottom of each chapter. This is a WIP, regularly updated.

Finally, I'll end with two road-trip fics; one a WIP and the other complete. First, we have Take my Hand (E) by @tawnyontumblr in which rock star, Crowley, wants to partly cross America by car before returning to the recording studio. He takes guitar tech, Aziraphale, along for company. The route they take? The famous Route 66. Although the route is no longer the destination it was before major highways, its attractions are still famous. This is a setting you'll love if you enjoy America's ticky tacky wonders. The other road trip is a WIP, set in the canon universe, Thus Saith the Lord (E) by @on1occasionfork. After averting yet another apocalypse, Crowley suggests a road trip before Aziraphale returns to London. They visit a number of famous (and infamous) American tourist sites that could exist nowhere else. Adding to the setting is the writer's choice to name the chapters for text that could only have come from American billboards, cementing the sense of place.

GO Fan Fiction Friday (10/17/25) - When the Garden is a Character

In Good Omens canon, Crowley talks to his plants and they respond. They shake and quiver, and are as much characters as The Bentley. But somehow, although there are many depictions of Crowley loving plants and gardening, relatively few writers continue the canon of a garden or plants as characters in their own right. Today, I give a shoutout to the creative writers whose stories treat plants or gardens as characters.

My first selection is Night Blooms (E) by @gaiaseyes451. In this mysterious story, Aziraphale visits an untended but once-familiar garden. He's drawn to a bloom which he picks and takes home to brew into a tea. The resulting dreams of an attractive man keep him coming back for more. Despite the changing season. blooms keep appearing. The mystery at the center of this story drew me in from the beginning. Keywords in my spreadsheet description include "sexy" and "beautiful writing."

Next up is So Much Discounted (T) by @wanderingsofal. After the Armageddon't, Crowley asks Aziraphale about love, before the demon disappears. Aziraphale goes to hell in an attempt to find Crowley. He discovers he must reassemble Crowley who has shattered, completing the process in the Garden of Eden, where he meets different aspects of Crowley's essence. The depiction of Crowley's different aspects appearing in the garden make the garden more than a setting. This is an angsty tale but it has a happy ending. The characterization of Crowley is fascinating.

In The Tree of Life (M) by @raxacoricofallapatoriusrulez, Aziraphale attends a tour at Kew gardens, not realizing the event is for children. The sunflower seed he plants to take home, becomes the subject of fun banter with Crowley, the botanist who led the tour. The writer's addition of photos taken at Kew gardens, make it even more a part of the story. This fic is a WIP that updates regularly. Despite the title, my next fic didn't join this category until chapter 23. It's Leaving Eden for a Garden (E) by @sazzyfics. I don't want to give the plot away here. I'll just tell you that while dealing with some angst in his life, Crowley finds some solace in a garden, apologizing to his plants for his bad behavior, and processing some complicated feelings. Although the plants don't respond, I found this a clever and moving way to hear Crowley's inner monologue. The silent garden is definitely a character. This is a WIP that updates regularly and is nearly fun. If you don't read WIPs, subscribe so you don't miss out. Finally, I'll highlight an eerie story, The Arrangement (M) by AppleSeeds. In this mixed AU, a not-entirely human Aziraphale asks for Crowley's help finding out what is harming the forest. I'm stretching the "garden" theme a bit. But I think it fits, and it's my theme so I'll do what I want. 😆 What I do know, is that it's a compelling story, and so well researched that the writer updated the story to reflect a scientific paper that came out while it was being written. ✨ Reflections on Til Debt Do Us Part ✨

So, this is way overdue, but life really had me in a chokehold these last months and I finally have a quiet moment to sit down and write this.

First, some RL updates, because they explain the delay:

I finished my two Master’s degrees this year – and yes, writing both theses at the same time was as intense as it sounds.

My cat Minerva (who some of you might remember from mentions in my fics) was very sick for a while, which took a lot out of me emotionally.

On top of that, I had extreme troubles moving back from Scotland to Germany. First my car broke down, then I ended up temporarily homeless and had to hop between hotels for a week. In the end my best friend from England literally came to rescue me (and my cats). My moving boxes are still missing.

So yeah. Life.

🌿✨ New Fic Teaser ✨📚

(Coming mid/late August – once I finish writing + editing properly!)

Went to Kew Gardens recently, and naturally that spiraled into a Good Omens human AU:

Crowley is a botanist with a PhD, working on the Tree of Life project. He gives science tours for school groups (and the occasional misguided adult). Aziraphale owns a dusty little bookshop in Soho and signs up for said tour purely to prove to his extremely athletic, extremely annoying brother that he does get outside sometimes.

It’s going to be short-ish, slice-of-life, low-stakes, high-fluster. Here’s a little preview:

Aziraphale realized his mistake almost immediately.

The tour group was mostly under the age of ten, outfitted in neon jackets and sticky fingers. There was a bubble machine involved. A woman named Bev handed him a clipboard shaped like a leaf.

He considered backing out. Quietly. With dignity.

And then the tour guide arrived.

Crowley — according to the badge clipped loosely to his coat — was tall, lean, wind-ruffled, and wore sunglasses on top of his head despite the grey clouds. His boots were muddy. His coat looked like it had once been expensive, now repurposed into something vaguely feral. He had the energy of someone who regularly forgot to eat and slept only when plants did.

He started talking about tree evolution using illustrations and sock puppets. Aziraphale, for reasons that remained unclear, stayed.

Later, while the children ran off toward a planting station, Crowley drifted up beside him.

“Bit older than our usual demographic,” he said, not unkindly.

Aziraphale cleared his throat. “Yes, well. I booked this as a… gesture.”

Crowley arched an eyebrow. “A gesture?”

“To prove to my brother that I do, in fact, leave the house.”

There was a beat. Then Crowley grinned, slow and crooked.

“Spite-booking a children’s botany tour. That’s a new one. Can’t say I hate it.”

Aziraphale glanced away, flustered. “It was meant to be adult-led. Educational.”

“I am an adult and educational,” Crowley said solemnly. “Especially about moss.”
