Merchandise Design Experimentation

Above is an experimentation for a t-shirt design which will going along with the V.I.P lanyard passes. I have used the same patterns and colours which is used for the Summer Party Identity. These designs will be printed onto white t shirts. This will be the theme of the summer party for the Whitbread Staff/Employees.

Collaboration - Idea and Development 

I collaborated with a fine artist on this project as this could be a group submission as well as an individual submission. As my friend was specialised in portraits I thought we could do something together. Together we discussed and come up with ideas on what we should do together. The plan was first to find a picture of Ice Cube from the 90s as the song ‘It was a good day’ was made and released in the 90s and had a 90s feel to it therefore we wanted  to use an image which linked to that era. We found a portrait image of Ice Cube from the 90s we felt would work. The Idea was to draw the portrait and once the portrait is complete, I would work on the rest digitally. My friend found her part of the project quite time consuming especially the fact that the she was working and also had uni projects going on and the deadline coming so soon, therefore somethings couldn’t go according to plan.

After she finished and finalised the portrait she gave it to me to scan onto my mac where I would work on it in photoshop

As shown above I took the portrait onto photoshop and want it to give the ‘Looking into the past’ effect by applying imagery from the scenes into the glasses. It didn’t come out as I wanted to do or planned it to but I was happy with the final outcome.

More Experimentation

Above shows more experimentation and development. I experimented with the text ‘It was a good day’, using a fonts which I see could work with the design. I also played around with print effects too to see how it would look if it was printed on textured paper.

Development and Colour Experimentation

I liked the way I have designed it in a box shape therefore it could be used freely and for multiple purposes such as social media and print design. It has a good amount of negative space around. I experimented with colours to liven the illustration up. I first tried with the blue colour, then yellow and then finally red. After tweaking the design making sure there are no unwanted lines or that everything that everything is done properly will submit these. I wanted a watercolour effect to give it that hand painted look instead of solid vector colours.

Development

This is my initial draft outcome. I thought of submitting the way it was but felt like it could be developed more. It looked too plain therefore I will try adding colour and experimenting with colour.

Developments

I took a screenshot of a particular part of the video and took it onto illustrator where I will be working on it. I first started on it his head then I will work my way round everything. I want to keep it simple and clean and would want it to be suitable for print design also.

Design Idea

My design Idea is to use this as a template to create my artwork. My plan is to use this to create an illustrative design and outline this whole image using the Wacom tablet and add in key features in the background that brings in some key moments in the music video. I wanted to use this image because this scene in the car is one of the main highlights in the video. The green impala is quite iconic too and till this day remembered being featured in this video.

Ice Cube Website - Research

I looked into Ice Cube’s social media pages and his website to get an insight on to the type of character he is and see how his social media presence is. His website looks really professional and is easy to navigate through. As soon as you click on his page, you can get an idea of what a character he was. Even though this image is quite recent, it links with his past and the things he’s been through as shown above above with the west coast hand sign with blood on his fingers.

Ice Cube - It Was A Good Day - Video - Research

The song and the music tell the story of how Ice Cube has a good day in South Central, LA. Throughout the song he enjoys playing basketball, having sex and cruising the streets out in the 1964 Green Chevrolet Impala which he refers to as the ‘droptop’ in the music video and also likes smoking marijuana, getting drunk and going to his friend Short Dog’s house to watch Yo! MTV Raps and later win at craps and bones eating fast food at 2 AM. These really are the key scenes in the video. I will use these key features of the video to produce graphic content celebrating the 25th Anniversary of this song.
