If you have a problem with law breakers you go to the cops. If you have a problem with the cops... you come to me.
I'm Detective Kaori with the Republic City Police Department's Office of Internal Investigations. You may have heard some people refer to us as the "elephant rat squad".
Then again, if you have nothing to hide then you shouldn't worry.

Did anyone else notice the sort of eerie music play when Kuvira said her name was Kuvira? Idk yo you get a pretty good track of where things are going with the music… I don’t trust it.
"I was curious if there was any more info on the guy that attacked me. I approached some P.I. guy, but I ain’t heard from him either."
Lieu adjusted her healer hat, as it was nearly falling off, muttering a curse under her tongue.
"There have been some reported muggings in the area you were attacked," Kaori said as she opened her desk drawer and took out a file, "It seems as if the muggings are the work of a local triad. Ever see these men before?"
She laid out several mugshots on her desk, "They're known affiliates."
"Agni Kais are getting pretty bold - from what I’ve heard from Chong down in Organized Crimes is that they’re building up muscle - trying to gain territory over the Triple Threats," she nodded at Lin.
"I won’t let you down Chief, let’s solve this case and take these guys down before they hurt anyone else."
"I like the way you think," Lin replied. "We’ll meet up at the Yue Bay docks later tonight and investigate. It’ll most likely end up being a stakeout due to some tip we received that a shipment is supposed to come in tonight.
"With any luck, we’ll be one step closer to shutting them down," she added and left Kaori’s office to prepare for that night.
Kaori nodded, sitting down at her desk to go over the file once more.

Later that night she waited at the docks, finding a nice niche between some crates that gave her a good view of the proceedings but also kept her mostly hidden from the Agnis there.
"You were right," she muttered, "There's a shipment of something down there, looks heavy."
One of them seemed to be struggling to lift a container of goods and failing miserably until a fellow mook helped him pick it up, "Weapons maybe?"
"Secretary Kaori, don't you think the situation on the northern border warrants some kind of military action in addition to law enforcement? We need to be wary in case former Earth Kingdom soldiers stationed on the border aid the separatists."
"I believe so General," she said, "I'd have been hesitant to involve the UF before, I didn't want to escalate the situation any further but..."
She sighed pinching the bridge of her nose between her thumb and forefinger, "It seems that thanks to the Red Lotus that's been taken care of. We need troops up there. Can you help me General?"
So she's essentially telling me to get over it. I don't have the responsibilities she and dad has etc. etc.
I ended up hanging up angrily on her.... probably not the best thing to do cause I'm sure my entire family is pissed at me. I get that I shouldn't worry... and I beat myself up over that a ton ... it does not help when someone tells me shit I already know. If I call you and tell you what's making me anxious as fuck validating my feelings then helping me work through them is a good step in making me feel better.
Now I remember why I don't like to open up to them.
"So I guess mom told you, huh," her 25 year old brother said as he sat up in the hospital bed, wringing the hem of his sheets with his hands.
"She did," Kaori responded quietly, sitting to his side as she leaned her elbows on her knees, "I have a few cops searching the house for his ... they'll let me know if they find anything."
Her brother scoffed, "They won't. That place went up like a tinder box, Kay... the metal support beams were melted, if there's anything left of our dad it won't be recognizable."
The detective didn't respond, choosing instead to study the tiled floor below her, scuffed and faded to off white with age, "Han..."
"What?" he replied angrily, "Mom and I were fighting for our lives out there and dad is dead. Did you even talk to him since you stormed out 5 years ago?!"
"I... no," she replied softly, "He made it very clear he never wanted to see me again."
"He wanted to forgive you," Han replied, "He wanted to repair the relationship, didn't you know that?!"
"What do you want me to do?" Kaori replied harshly, glaring at her brother, "Go back in time to before Ba Sing Se fell into ruin and repair everything? I'm a cop, not a miracle worker."
"Spoken like Kaori," Han laughed bitterly, wincing in pain, "Rational and heartless as ever."
Kaori said nothing, just glared at her brother, finally she said - "If I stayed here I would have been killed along with most of the police force who tried to stop the riots. Is that what you would have wanted?"
"No," Han sighed, "It's just... all this shit went down. Dad tried to stop them from looting our house but one of the looters managed to catch him in the head with a boulder. I had to get mom out of there and... Kay - I can't feel my legs."
"What?" she looked up, shocked, "But the healers can't they do something?"
Han was a strong young man, broad shouldered with a confident smile that never faded ... except for now. His sharp clothing was replaced by a ratty hospital gown and his strong visage replaced by a weak, ill looking expression, "No," he said softly, "They did all they could but... I mean eventually I may get feeling back - maybe even get to walk again."
At that moment their mother walked in, her graying hair tangled and matted after days without showering. Kaori stood up, ushering her mother to her chair, "The doctors want to discharge you soon," the older woman said, "There's not enough staff... and you're out of danger..."
"Where will we go?!" Han protested, "The refugee camps are filling up, there's still riots going on!"
"There's an airship to Republic City, it leaves tomorrow," Kaori said as she crossed her arms, leaning on the window sill, "Given that you're immediate family I can take you with me. I'll clear it with the officials in Immigration but I'm sure you'll be granted asylum. It's the least I can do."
She looked away for a moment, then looked at her only family with suddenly moist eyes, "I'm so sorry I wasn't here with you. I'm sorry this had to happen and I'm sorry I was so distant. I know that I can't take back what I've done but... please forgive me."
"We've already forgiven you," her mom said and Han nodded in agreement, a tear trickling down his face, "As long as we stick together, as long as we're a family... everything will be okay."
"Oh come on you two," Han said spreading his arms grinning, "Gimme a hug!"
Kaori laughed, leaning close to her brother and letting his still strong arms encircle her, she held onto him and her mom as tears streamed down her face.
