Ihre Wunderschöne Freundin
Sarah smiled as she looked down at the other woman, shaking her head ever so slightly in an attempt not to laugh quietly. She would have never expected that Magda could be so adorable, even though she should have probably known it beforehand. Sneaking into her room tonight had been a wonderful idea.
❝ I can’t claim that I mind. ❞
Her hand made its way to Magda’s head immediately; she could never resist the urge to play with her beautiful red hair, and if she was entirely honest, she didn’t even want to.
The moment Magda felt Sarah’s small fingers in her hair, she could not help but audibly sigh in happiness. It wasn’t an exaggeration to say that words could not describe how much she loved Sarah. Really, it was a paradox. The greatest, most intense feeling in this world, and yet at the same time, massless and weightless as the air itself. She could not help but reach up with her free hand to pull Sarah’s face close to hers and kiss her full, rosy lips.
❝ Good. ❞
She released Sarah to snuggle closer to her.
❝ I’d be sad if you did. I mean, you’re so soft and warm. And did I mention that I love you? ❞

❝ You know what I’ve decided Sarah? ❞
Magda turned to look up at her girlfriend, a small but bright smile of LOVE and CONTENTMENT on her face. She reached an arm behind Sarah’s back and settled further into her lap.
❝ I’ve decided that you’re going to be my new pillow from now on. ❞

The thought of losing Magda had been the only thing on Alfred’s mind for hours at this point. The woman he had fallen in love with the moment he had first seen her had been so close to dying, to being turned into a vampire, and he still could not believe that if he and professor Abronsius had come back downstairs only a little bit later, it would have already been too late for her. Thankfully, she hadn’t turned yet, wasn’t even dead yet when they had found her; she had only been unconcious, and the professor had been able to save her life.
Abronsius had decided to go to the castle straight away, and Alfred, who could not handle being away from Magda, not for as long as she was in such a critical situation, had insisted on staying in the village; when explaining to the professor why he wanted to do, he simply claimed that should Magda, for some very strange reason, actually turn into a vampire, he would be there to take care of the problem and kill her ( he knew, however, that he would never be able to kill her ).
Alfred hadn’t left her side for a single second, convinced that he would be there when Magda finally woke up. Every now and then, Rebecca Chagal had been there as well to check on him and Magda, but most of the time, she had left him alone, which he was grateful for; he didn’t want anyone around as he sat on a chair next to Magda’s bed, holding her cold hand in the two of his own and sending quiet prayers to God, in hope that the blonde woman would wake up soon.
The world became known to Magda slowly, first a muted silence in an inky darkness and leaving the stain of a nightmare behind. Feeling made itself known, an encompassing warmth surrounding her, cold creeping down her face and her arms. And suddenly, pain. A sharp, throb in her neck tore into her, breaking the bliss of unconsciousness.
Her eyes squeezed themselves further closed of their own accord, as a small moan escaped her. Instinctively, unthinkingly, she lifted a hand to press to to the source of this agony, unable to resist putting forth some small effort to soothe it away. But her hand was so heavy! In her weak state, she was unable to force a single finger to stir, unable to pull herself up, unable to do naught but take small, shallow breaths.
Time passed, it must have, for slowly, Magda could feel her strength return. Slowly, but regardless, it the change occurred and Magda felt her breathing steady and deepen. She tried to stir her hand again, albeit for a different purpose. The pain was still there certainly, but her wits had returned enough that Magda understood the futility of her original purpose, and realized that she risked stirring the pain to a state worse than it was now. Instead, she merely wanted to try to move her hand to some other place. It was nearly intolerably warm, as if fever held that one singular limb in its grip - and neglected to take the rest of her being. But she still could not stir it! It seemed to be weighted down, a weight beyond her power to budge. Had her hand not been consumed by fire, she should have simply let her efforts go. She was so TIRED. But the discomfort was far greater than her fatigue ever could be.
She struggled for a moment, and then her eyes slowly opened and a great light flooded her senses. She blinked rapidly and slowly the world made itself known to her, blurred beyond comprehension at first and finally falling into focus. She was in her room, bright sunlight streamed though the window, and there was a man by her side.
She slowly turned her head towards the man, vaguely recognizing him. She knew him, but how? Happiness and relief flooded her soul, but she could not explain why. Who was he? Her gaze searched his face, desperately looking for answers. He was handsome, he was by her side, and, as her gaze traveled lower, she saw that he was the reason for the unexplained weight. And back to his face. Such beautiful, deep brown eyes. So soft and gentle, looking at her with - dare she think it? - kindness. No one had ever looked at her like that before, no one but -
❝ Alfred? ❞
Alfred was here. Magda might have been in pain, but she was happy. An unexplained happiness, an irrational happiness. But at least she was not alone.
❝ What happened? I - ❞
She struggled to pull herself up, but the strain pulled something and the pain in her neck suddenly intensified terribly and a small cry of pain escaped her.
SARAH
The pain that Magda’s words caused in her was one she had never felt before. Nothing in her entire life that had led up to this point could ever equal the pain that she was feeling right now, standing in front of the woman she loved, truly loved, and who seemed to believe that she had forgotten about her. In reality, Sarah had thought about Magda the entire time, and if she’d had the possibility to do so, she would have returned to the village only for her ── to get her and bring her to the castle as well, for it seemed to be a much better place to be.
Sarah shook her head immediately, stepping closer towards Magda and gently placing her hands on the woman’s shoulders, her own brown eyes fixed on Magda’s blue ones, almost as if she was capable of looking right into her soul that way. And maybe she was and simply did not know about this ability, but what did it matter? All that mattered was that she could see how much she had hurt the other woman, and so Sarah stepped even closer, her face now only inches away from Magda’s.
❝ I am happy about the life he has given me ❞, she replied. There was no point in denying that being a vampire was so much better than being human, at least from what she could tell right now. She was not only free, but also stronger, finally willing and able to stand up for herself in the way she had never dared to before, even though she had wanted to do so for years. She didn’t have to sneak out at night anymore, for now, she could leave whenever she wanted.
❝ But I would not be if you weren’t here. ❞
The lump in Magda’s throat dropped straight down, through her chest, past her heart, and into her stomach, releasing new feelings in its wake. Surprise, longing, fear, love, worry all swirled within her, creating new anxieties in their wake. Magda looked away from Sarah’s deep brown eyes and squeezed her own shut, trying to distance herself emotionally from the situation as much as possible.
She wanted nothing more than to close the remaining distance between herself and Sarah, to pull Sarah into her arms and never let her go. She wanted to bury her face in Sarah’s soft curls, to whisper words of love and devotion in Sarah’s ear. But, she couldn’t stand to the pain again, the pain if Sarah left her behind again to chase a dream disjoint from Magda. Had the cards of fate not dealt Magda eternity, she would have lived out the rest of her days with a question that would never be answered, uncertain of the fate her love had met.
But this was not what had crushed her soul. Magda would bear any and all grief and sorrow for someone she loved. But Sarah had simply forgotten, likely only too willing to cast off all ties of her former life - including Magda. If life had taught her anything in the course of her twenty-three years on the Earth, it was that actions spoke far louder than words could ever hope to.
Magda’s lips tightened into a thin like as she smiled the same sad smile. If Sarah was lying to her, Magda would rather simply let her go here and now. After all, what right did she have to infringe upon Sarah’s eternal happiness? She had no right to burden Sarah with her unwanted presence, no right to force herself into Sarah’s life, no right to twist her destiny and Sarah’s into one.
❝ It’s alright Sarah, truly, it’s alright. I understand. Please don’t worry about sparing my feelings, I beg you. ❞

Magda looked at Sarah, no doubt the heavy sadness she felt in the only too evident in her eyes, on her face. But, as much as she wanted to cast blame on Sarah, to fling words of hot anger and words of hate, to speak of broken promises, she couldn’t. After all, it was Magda’s fault for letting herself get close to Sarah, to letting herself believe that perhaps this time, someone would stay by her side. But promises were easily made and easily broken. There was no reason that promises of love and devotion were any different.
They had promised each other that wherever the other went, the other would go. That each would forever be in the mind of the other. Magda would never forget Sarah, for how could she? How could she forget Sarah’s dark, wild curls? Or her soulful brown eyes which sparkled in hope? Or her smile which seemed to stop time itself? Or the way she frowned in concentration, a small furrowed line between her fine eyebrows? Or that look of playful mischief she so often had?
Magda was entirely incapable of forgetting Sarah. But clearly, the feeling did not run in both directions. A scenario which Magda understood only too well and was all too familiar with.
❝ There’s no need to be sorry Sarah. It’s alright. ❞
She forced a smile on her face, a brave smile which felt like a grimace. She opened her mouth to speak, but the words could not follow. A great lump had newly and unexpectedly formed in her throat, blocking even the passage of air. Magda swallowed, willing the hot mass to disappear, at least until she could find the comfort of solitude. She WOULD be strong.
❝ Are you happy now? At least? ❞ Magda’s voice cracked as she forced out the last part of the sentence. ❝ With the Graf? ❞

──── &. @rcvanche | continued!
What a strange thing to say! Sarah had to admit that she did not know a lot about the woman’s past; her parents did and as always, they were keeping it from her as if it was a secret that only very few people were allowed to know about. She had never asked Magda. It seemed like something they just did not talk about, just like they never talked about why her father was so over-protective. They knew, somehow, that talking was not an option.
And yet, Sarah simply smiled at her and shook her head, convinced that this time, the older girl was actually wrong with what she was saying. That did not happen often ( at least Sarah was convinced that Magda, who had seen so much more of the world than she had, could not possibly say anything wrong ), but right now, it had happened.
❝ Of course we cannot change the past. But the future can only be bright ── I know it will be. You and me, we will make up for the past and make the future better. ❞
Magda had never known anyone other than Sarah who could smile as she did. It was as it light was simply radiating out from her, warming and coaxing anything it touched back to life. It was as if her entire being was as bright as the sun, her will a force as powerful and unstoppable as the wind. As miserable as Magda was, even she could not help but smile ── just a bit ── back at the girl. But then, as soon as the words had fallen from Sarah’s lips, Magda straightened in surprise and stared in incredulity at Sarah.
'You and me.'
Magda bit her lip, almost not daring to believe that she had indeed heard correctly. No one cared about Magda, the impoverished girl, the mere barmaid. Everyone exploited Magda until they had no more use for her, then they left.
But could it be?
A great joy, an unstoppable hope of an impossible dream germinated and bloomed in the depths of Magda’s chest and spread to each and every inch of her being.
❝ I hope we can, Sarah. ❞
Magda reached for Sarah’s hand and gave it a small squeeze.
❝ Maybe one day we can both leave this place and find new lives in bigger and better places. ❞

"You helped me. And now I will help you."
Magda sadly gazed into the deep brown eyes of the young woman besides her. Sadness weighed heavily on her soul, so heavily, that Magda could not hide her grief as she normally tried to. So distressed was she that she could not even shield her only friend in this world from the sorrow which was entirely her own.
❝No one can help me now. The decisions I made can’t be undone and the past can’t be changed.❞
