Renata Abbade is a Brazilian artist whose passion for crafts from childhood has evolved into a unique and tactile creative process. Her work swivels from manual craft done in solitude to creative collaborative explorations. Earning a degree in fashion design, she quickly started her career as a stylist in São Paulo. In 2000 she moved to New York to work in the fashion industry. Soon after, Renata began shooting video performances and designing textile prints. Currently she applies that knowledge to making ceramics, macramé, tapestry, crochet, and a variety of textile arts.
For the past two years Renata has adopted a nomadic lifestyle to learn, and experiment how one can live sustainably. She has been applying this experience in developing a catalyst for social change - a Residency Institute devoted to empowering communities around the world. The Institute is a union of her artistic pursuits, centered in the dialogue between craft, design, and social/environmental issues. This work will boost the craft sector by pairing experienced artists and designers with skilled traditional artisans. The aim is to advance and transform communities by the coupling of urban creative professionals with crafters deeply connected to their natural environment and the materials they work with.
