"It must be admitted that, although I possessed a certain degree of ambition, like every other active human being, I was never animated by the desire to obtain "a post." For me "what I am" was always of less importance than "what I can," that is to say, what I was in a position to accomplish. In this way I, too, had my ambition and it was especially noticeable there where I stood with my whole heart and soul in the struggle, where the issue was the abolition of the slavery of working women." - Alexandra Kollontai
Never not thinking about what Guillermo del Toro said about hope.

dope article
“Revolutionary Marxists reject the impotent pessimism, escapism, and nihilism, as well as the false optimism of the representatives of the status quo. We understand that the root of these convulsions can be found in the crisis of the capitalist mode of production and that transitions between such modes can be as messy and tumultuous as they are exhilarating. A tidal wave of class anger is building just beyond the horizon, and when the tsunami hits, the very shoreline will be transformed.
Class-independent politics, mass strikes, occupations, and eventually, the socialist revolution are in our not-too-distant future. We saw a glimpse of what’s to come with last year’s strikes and unionization drives, along with this year’s student walkouts and the Chicago teachers’ job action to demand safe conditions for workers and students alike.
Socialism in our lifetime is not only an aspiration but a revolutionary perspective and guide to action. The end is coming—the end of capitalism. Certainly not next week and perhaps not in the next decade or even two. But the objective and subjective pieces are falling into place, and history is far from over. It’s up to the workers and youth of today to prepare the ground for capitalism’s replacement by a genuinely humane and just system: world socialism.”

ANATOMY OF A MAGAZINE AND THE HIERARCHY OF TYPE LECTURE:
I had a lecture on the Anatomy of a Magazine and the Hierarchy of type. This lecture was extremely useful as it allowed me to familiarise certain terminology that is used to describe various different components within a magazine. This is really helpful as I can use this terminology in the future when I am explaining parts of a magazine. This is really insightful for me as I have not created/designed a magazine before, so when I create one for this module I will be more familiar with them.
Another thing learnt from this lecture is the importance of grids. Many magazines/newspapers use grids as they help to create a coherent layout and give a nice structure to the pages. Whilst learning the importance of grids, I also learnt other terminology that can be applied to my annotation such as ‘gutter’.
Aspects which I learnt from the lecture that will definitely make me consider using grids is the fact that they:
Can sometimes speed up the layout and production
Create an overall design cohesion
Create a clear hierarchy of information
Can make pages look fresh and more unique (so not all pages look the same.)
Other aspects of the lecture I noted were:
Strong typographic hierarchy is important
Viewers eye is most likely to be attracted to the largest text first.
The use of colour can either draw attention to or de-emphasize an element. (try to use a limited range of colours as too much can be distracting)
White space and pace are important to consider.
Towards the end of the lecture we were then given a few tasks to complete:
Design a contents page using InDesign (this task is to help us familiarise ourselves and get comfortable with InDesign.)
Looking at two pages DPS (double-page spread) from two different sources, analyse the visual and typographic hierarchy on the page. And then redraw it in our sketchbooks.
Choose the magazine and then create some masthead sketches.
Choose a given article or find one on the internet that will support our work and designs nicely.
