I got an audiobook copy of The Book Thief from my local library (they have an app! I only just found out about it and I've never been more excited!) and I've just been slowly making my way through it at 1.25x speed LOL
I can see why it's so highly praised, it's really good, and there were a few parts that nearly made me cry (I didn't only because I was in public oops).
But also I know the history and I am Afraid for these characters.
i'm reading priest's 残次品 and ngl this is the second time i'm picking this up; the first time didn't go so well for a variety of reasons and i ended up dropping it, but i have to say i really do enjoy priest's characters ☺️
湛卢 and 四哥's interactions are genuinely so funny
finally met 陆必行 again!! the impression i had of him from what posts i saw way back when is so different from the vibe i get from reading the novel, it's almost as if they're completely different people? i wonder what happens in the course of the novel, would it change what i think of him 🤔
also, this is one of the funniest lines i've seen in a While:
there's something really interesting about how the eden garden system is being used in the 七大星系, the way it basically intrudes on people's privacy by detecting their thoughts/feelings and ensuring nothing negative occurs. i guess you could argue it's good? but personally i believe that negative thoughts and feeling serve a purpose, and i would feel incredibly robbed if theres some external system preventing me from accessing that (not that i Would if i had, say, grown up in that environment).
it's also interesting how 林静恒's use of the 伊甸园 system (or lack of use, rather) made everyone view him negatively prior to his "death". it's very "why do you want privacy if you have nothing to hide!!" and it's soooo sus. i can't wait to see if this whole system comes crashing down or something 👀
it's also kind of funny how you can see all of the flags priest is setting up like "and everyone thought it was all okay since stringent laws have been set long ago and nothing has gone wrong", "no one bothers reading the terms and conditions". something bad's gonna happen to this system!!! read your t&cs, people!!!

最近看到有人推《私藏浪漫》就好奇看了第一集，没想到还真的挺好看的，一口气把32集都看完了，结局也很不错

I love how Chinese internet slang has taken the term "chicken soup" (as in Chicken Soup for the Soul) and used it to mean anything feel-good and motivational, similar to the stuff that you Would actually find in a Chicken Soup for the Soul book.
It's also sometimes used somewhat disparagingly, with the implication that what's being said is shallow or meaningless, or doesn't really affect any change in people's lives, but the connection is there and obvious enough that as someone who used to read a lot of Chicken Soup for the Soul growing up, I made the link between the term and the concept immediately without much difficulty.
It's only now that I realise this isn't actually slang that exists in the English language? Could you call it a calque? It's so funny that the name of the actual dish 鸡汤 is being used in this manner. From a book! In a way that doesn't even exist in the source language! I love this so much.
