For those in the notes arguing about whether "uncontacted" is the correct term; whether or not it seems the most accurate, it's the term that is being used. "Uncontacted" just means they reject contact with non-Indigenous society, not that they are isolated from all other people or don't know it exists or have never spoken to a white person before. Uncontacted Indigenous peoples reject contact with outsiders, as an active and ongoing choice. Survival International has calculated that there are 196 uncontacted groups worldwide; some of these are entire peoples who are uncontacted – such as the Sentinelese in India. Some uncontacted groups – such as the Ayoreo Totobiegosode in the Paraguayan Chaco or the Amahuaca in Peru – are sub-groups of bigger tribes with whom they share a language and often a territory. Their denial of contact is a clear expression of their autonomy and self-determination.

Very funny to me that Ch'en's legendary heirloom sword Chi Xiao has the brand of a Columbian weapons manufacturer stamped right on the blade. Don't lie Wei Yenwu, that thing came with a serial code and a three-year warranty

it's symbolic of wei yenwu's character! quoting @hexdrake

there's kinda this distinction in wuxia (maybe other chinese fiction in historical settings i'm not an expert) where one-bladed swords (often translated as just "blades") are considered base and common, while two-bladed weapons ("swords") are considered weapons of nobility. so in the context it is literally wei yenwu disguising his nobility AND westernizing; two things he did when he became the Chief of Lungmen. he too was reforged by the west into a common blade, as it were.

It's also possibly a symbolic "fuck you" to Yan as a whole, that he took their ancestral dragon-slaying sword and had it reforged in this way, given the bad blood he had with his brother afterwards.

We actually get to see the sword's original form in the Reset Artbook! There it is on the right:

Something I also find really interesting is that the reforged sword, while bearing a red sheath, lost the distinctive red blade the original jian had. I have to imagine that it's a precursor-made supermetal like the Sighs of Kings was, now reforged into something new, but there's probably some kind of interesting symbolism to be argued wrt the unique traits of the sword being erased in the reforging, only displaying that nature while covered up with symbolic trappings of the past.

Like, literally, the sword's sheath is the red part now, rather than the blade itself. Chi xiao, 赤霄, "crimson sky", is no longer a crimson blade except when it's sheathed. Food for thought, anyway.

INTERIM SERVICE BULLETIN 88-114-C

THIS BULLETIN REPLACES BULLETIN 88-114-B

SUBJECT: UNWANTED START OF THE LEGACY CALIBRATION MODE - TYPE 4 CORTICAL INTERFACE, ALL MARKS

1. APPLICABILITY

This bulletin applies to each Type 4 cortical interface built to the 1974 specification.

2. THE CONDITION

These interfaces have a maintenance channel. The name of the channel is MK-0. Technicians call it bench mode. Revision B added the somatic return interlock. MK-0 is older than the interlock. Therefore the interlock does not control MK-0.

When MK-0 is active, the interface writes telemetry to the ring buffer. The interface sets the retention flag to null. The buffer erases this telemetry after 22 minutes. The buffer keeps this telemetry only if a trigger event occurs first.

Facilities report that MK-0 becomes active during a usual watch. The maintenance log does not show a bench mode entry for these events. The depot did a test on four interfaces. The depot did not find the cause.

3. THE BEHAVIOR OF THE UNIT

MK-0 does not command the unit. MK-0 asks the unit for calibration percepts. Examples: reference tones, reference geometry, proprioceptive test patterns.

The unit makes these percepts. The unit obeys a maintenance instruction. Training tells the unit that a maintenance instruction is correct. The unit obeys its training.

Feature analysis shows the usual compliance signatures. The refusal cluster does not increase. The contested-order cluster does not increase.

This office examined four incidents. In each incident, the conduct of the unit was correct for the environment that MK-0 showed to the unit.

4. CORRECTIVE ACTION

You cannot close the MK-0 channel. To close the channel, the service must re-qualify each platform built to the 1974 connection geometry. No budget line for this work exists.

5. INTERIM MEASURES

Obey these instructions until this office releases a new bulletin.

Keep the interface junction box in your custody at all times.

Write each bench mode entry in the log by hand. Use ink.

Write the name of the technician with each entry.

Do not use telemetry to find out if a calibration event occurred. The telemetry is not there. This is correct operation.

If a unit tells you about a calibration instruction, look in the log.

If the log does not show that instruction, write the statement of the unit in the incident file. Use the words of the unit.

Send the incident file to this office.

NOTE: Regulation does not let you use a statement from a unit as a finding. Send the statement to this office.

TASK 12-40-05 - POST-OPERATION CARE OF THE ELEMENT Applicable to Class III and Class IV elements, all cradle marks. Qualified technicians only.

WARNING: DO NOT TOUCH THE ELEMENT UNTIL 4 MINUTES AFTER YOU OPEN THE LOOP. The somatic return path settles slowly. Contact before settlement causes an involuntary limb movement. An involuntary limb movement can injure the element or the technician.

CAUTION: Use only the materials in the approved list (see 12-40-05, Table 1). A bristle brush damages the port margin. Damage to the port margin causes an infection. An infection removes the element from service for 30 days or more.

1. GENERAL

1.1 The element is a high-value asset with a long service life. The procedures in this task protect that service life. Do them in the order given.

1.2 Ask the element before you uncover it. Wait for the answer. An element that does not expect uncovering holds muscle tension in the shoulders and the neck. Muscle tension increases the time of this task by 5 to 10 minutes.

1.3 Do not do a task that the element can do. Motor proficiency decreases without practice. Decreased proficiency increases the maintenance load on the depot. Wait for the element before you proceed.

2. CLEANING

2.1 Clean the port margins with a lint-free cloth and the approved solution. Use one pass. Do not scrub. Do not use solvent inside the port collar.

2.2 Clean the lead channel with the soft brush. Move the brush away from the port. Do not move the brush toward the port.

2.3 Examine each pressure point. Look at the sacrum, the scapulae, the heels, and the occiput. Report any discoloration by message. Do not apply a dressing without instruction from the medical officer.

2.4 Dry the element completely. A wet port collar corrodes.

3. FEEDING

3.1 Put the element in the upright position. Confirm the angle is 90 degrees or more.

3.2 Give small portions. Give one portion at a time.

3.3 The element cannot use the vocal prosthesis and swallow at the same time. Do not ask the element a question during a meal. Wait for the meal to end.

3.4 Stay in the compartment for the full meal.

4. CLOTHING

4.1 Give the garment to the element. Do not dress the element.

4.2 If the element asks for help, help with that item only. Return the remaining items to the element.

4.3 Check that no seam crosses a port collar. A seam over a port collar causes an abrasion in 6 to 8 hours.
