Full Story
Long before plants overtook the planet, the Earth was covered in giant, tree-sized mushrooms.
(Source)
This sounds bogus but check the source - Smithsonian Mag. Weird, but apparently according to the SM article I was linked to, true.
your friendly neighborhood autistic with paleontology as a special interest, here to expand on this a bit!
the image is fake. but:
currently, the world’s largest single organism IS a mushroom. it’s a massive growth of honey mushrooms, growing under a forest in oregon. it takes up about 4 square miles, stretched out over 60 miles.
we don’t know exactly how old it is, but based on it’s growth rate, it’s anywhere between 2000-8650 years old. (!!! *excitement*)
the caption is also true, although also completely unrelated to the (fake) picture. here are real pictures of them:
(lol)
the fossils found are called prototaxites, and there’s actually still some debate about what exactly they are- mostly because a lot of scientists simply can’t wrap their heads around the idea of giant mushrooms covering the earth. the alternate theories of what they were are lichen or rolled-up formations of moss, but giant mushrooms seems to be the leading theory.
whatever they were, they were everywhere, and at aprox. 20 feet tall, they were the tallest organisms on land from approximately 420 million to 350 million years ago.
fan art!!!
conclusion: ANCIENT EARTH HAD GIANT DONGS GROWING OUT OF IT. ALL OVER THE PLACE.
thank you for your time.

There’s something very frustrating about coming across two internet comments expressing hope that Gwendoline Christie will be cast as Bobbie Draper in the second season of The Expanse and not being able to say how utterly wrong that is because the comments are like six months old.
We get it guys, she’s tall and Brienne of Tarth is awesome and Captain Phasma…uh, looked cool. That doesn’t mean she needs to play every tall, badass female character out there. Especially when she’s white and Bobbie explicitly isn’t.
Right? Gwendoline is amazing! I love her work. She cannot possibly be the only very tall woman actor in the world. And Bobbie is very much not a blonde white lady.
They REALLY need to get the casting of Bobbie right, or so many people are going to be mad. (Like me.)
They haven’t whitewashed any characters so far and even cast POC as characters with unstated racial descriptions (Havelock), so I am strangely confident.
They whitewashed Ade from the first episode (Holden’s lover) and that apparently really upset some people. I…did not much care. She was on the show for about 5 minutes, and they said they cast the actress who had the best chemistry with Steven Strait. But other than that, you are totally right, they have done a great job being diverse and inclusive.
I think they are going to do right by Bobbie.
Ade was in the book for so little time that I didn’t even remember what she looked like. XD But now that you mention it, yeah, wasn’t she black?
Yeah, she was explicitly described as Nigerian.
Ade was indeed black. Though she was in the story for such a short time that when I read that people were upset about the whole thing, I had to pull out the book and make sure there wasn’t a major character that I just forgot about.
It’s not cool that they whitewashed her. But I do think that they are actively trying to cast POC and women and represent diverse sexualities and I’m willing to cut them a little slack.
And now: bring on Bobbie, Martian Marine of my heart.
The authors actually adressed these points. About Bobbie they said (when someone suggested casting Katee Sackhoff:
“No, she’s not Polynesian, and we’re deliberately keeping the ethnic diversity of the books in the show.“
And regarding Ade:
“There are several reasons that Kristin Hager got the role, all of which had long discussions and conversations about whitewashing and the diversity of the project. The short form is this: the diversity of the project is very important to all of us here, but being constrained by every detail of the books isn’t. Ade has been changed to an anglo woman. Admiral Souther and Dmitri Havelock are being played by non-anglo actors. In all, the mix of the show will, I hope, reflect a richly diverse set of characters in a richly diverse variety of roles. That every role isn’t exactly the same as the book is a feature, not a bug.“

Thank you for finding the actual quotes! I knew they had addressed it, but didn’t have time to go searching for it. That encapsulates why they get my trust on casting issues.
