There are monkeys, used to being fed by tourists, who are now coming into the city looking for food. Rival gangs of them are fighting over what food they can find.

The Nara deer, the ones who bow for their feed crackers, who would usually be fed by visitors to the park, are wandering out of the park and into strange places in search of food and, presumably, people.

In the absence of humans, animals are moving into spaces they were unable to get to before. Since humans are still around, this isn’t great, but it’s kind of neat to think that if all humans disappeared, animals would not take long to start returning.

Everything is terrifying, but humans are so strong.

Societies at my university are doing food bank drives. Italians are singing on their balconies and cheering health workers that go by. My university originally wasn’t going to close so lecturers took matters into their own hands and cancelled their classes, and now the university IS closing. When the government response isn’t strong enough, people are cancelling mass gatherings themselves and isolating to limit the spread. One of my friends is streaming to her self-isolating friends. My mum is going back to work tomorrow in an NHS reception. The Australian Grand Prix got cancelled and now 10,000+ people are watching an esports game version of the race on Twitch and making memes about it. All over the world, people are trying to cheer each other up.

My biggest problem with apocalypse movies, with zombie tv shows, has always been the way it portrays a world post-disaster. When humans were living in caves and hunting for survival, they drew art on the walls and told stories that were passed down in oral tradition. When London closed for the plagues, theater troupes would go around the country performing for the smaller villages instead. The human drive to create, to entertain, to adventure, to see and do new things, has always been and will always be unmoved by a crisis.

So yes people are panic buying, yes employers and governments are being selfish and cruel. But more than ever this has highlighted that, that is not what humans are. It’s something we’re pushed to be by this society, actual cruelty is an outlier.

I’ve been clinically depressed for a long time, so it feels bizarre to say: I love humans. I am overflowing with how much I really, truly, love us. Humans are silly, tender, hopeful, and social creatures. Even something as small as a long train journey, delayed and late at night, is enough for humans to take up solidarity. No matter what happens, what state the world is in, what alterations we have to make to our lives, we will never escape being recognizably, inherently human. Thank god.

what is depression? it’s nothing. and it’s looking past all the nothing only to find more nothing. it’s just a pile of nothing on nothing on nothing and you keep looking through it because you thought you caught a glimpse of something in the pile once, but you keep looking and all it is is nothing on nothing on nothing. and there’s an occasional pang in your chest when you realise that it all is just eternal nothingness and you just about give up on the stupid nothing pile but then you think you see a new something and the cycle repeats eternally. and for some reason you can’t stop doing this task no matter how much you want to you have to just stand there sorting through an endless pile of nothing. #papercupart #depression #portrait #copicmarkers #nothing https://www.instagram.com/p/B9fz9gTDuu5/?igshid=1o2r3mwngdywf

look what a cool citizen i am! doing all the democracy. don’t skip out on a right you have. don’t skip out just because it’s inconvenient. i saw a couple stomp out of line because it took more than three minutes. they literally got in line, stood huffily for three minutes complaining loudly and then left saying they didn’t have time. don’t skip out because people are scary. i mean they totally are and interacting with humans is terrifying. but literally no one talked to me except the people who had to. i did so much fucking paperwork for this right. and i’m so so glad that i did! https://www.instagram.com/p/B9SmH2QDI25/?igshid=13l2vjugfxj2v
