Hey. Why isn’t the moon landing a national holiday in the US. Isn’t that fucked up? Does anyone else think that’s absurd?

It was a huge milestone of scientific and technological advancement. (Plus, at the time, politically significant). Humanity went to space! We set foot on a celestial body that was not earth for the first time in human history! That’s a big deal! I’ve never thought about it before but now that I have, it’s ridiculous to me that that’s not part of our everyday lives and the public consciousness anymore. Why don’t we have a public holiday and a family barbecue about it. Why have I never seen the original broadcast of the moon landing? It should be all over the news every year!

It’s July 20th. That’s the day of the moon landing. Next year is going to be the 54th anniversary. I’m ordering astronaut shaped cookie cutters on Etsy and I’m going to have a goddamn potluck. You’re all invited.

Finally getting around to watching Blue Eye Samurai... The voice acting is decent. The backgrounds and visual design are stunning. Pretty animation. Immersive music...until 40 minutes into episode one.

What. The. Hell.

You don't set up this historic, cultural atmosphere, then blatantly blow your viewer out of the experience by blasting the hyper-modern "BATTLE WITHOUT HONOR OR HUMANITY."

Homage or not. HOTEI or not. Nothing prepared me for the instantaneous ejection from the story due to this choice.

I know this page has been shared extensively on this site already, but I couldn't help posting it because it does live very rent-free in my head for various reasons, including: this is not something I expected to find in Berserk at all.

When I first watched the Memorial Edition anime adaptation of Berserk, I went in with 0 expectations. I did not know what the story was about. I was told about some of the content warnings, but that was about it. I didn't expect to find war, betrayal, or monsters. And I did not expect to find love in any shape or form in the narrative.

At the point this comes up in the anime, I remember thinking this came out of the blue because nowhere in the adaptation I felt like there was any cue of yearning, or attraction, or desire from one side or the other. But then I read the manga. And yes, the build up is there. In the cliff. In the cave. In Casca's happy face finding Guts alive after the 100 men battle. In the bonfire of dreams. When Guts carries Casca to see Griffith. In their conversation at the ball. In Guts' words to Judeau when he's leaving. When Casca holds Guts' broken sword after he leaves.

This is also a sequence that feels very human. So many emotions coming into play, some even contradictory, summed up in this moment.

All things considered, this is probably my favourite page in all of the Golden Age Arc. And that's why I couldn't skip posting it to this blog.
