I was asked to explain how I did the text effects for this Dinah Lance set and while I usually have no idea what the heck I’m doing, I thought I might spare some others the madness of figuring these out.
It’s pretty easy and this is less explanation and more just a walkthrough but here we go

this is a basic tips & tricks post for how I make my gifs. I am sure there are probably easier and better ways to do things, but this is how I have been doing it and I am lazy so I've basically got it down to a few clicks by setting up actions to do most of the work so if that sounds like something you might like - read on!
I use windows and photoshop cc 2022 for making my gifs. I also use caps (captured using potplayer and in jpg format) so once you have your caps ready, just import them into photoshop as normal.
RESIZING YOUR GIFS
the first thing I do when I import my caps is crop it down - and as I said, i'm lazy so I have all of my regular sizes saved so I can just select them. as you can see - they are all +2px larger than the tumblr dimensions and that is because if you ever see that weird little white border you sometimes get when making gifs? if you remove pixels off you won't get that so when cropping it's essential to add some pixels so that you have some to crop off (I hope that makes sense!)
these are my settings for scaling my images down.
MAKING YOUR GIF
as i said, i'm lazy - so once I have cropped my caps to whatever size I want, all I do is click on my action and let it do it's thing. I have it set where it sharpens and converts back to timeline with the 0.05 time delay so you don't have to reopen your gifs in photoshop again and save them.
the two windows that pop up are to allow you to adjust the settings if you wish - if you like it just click ok and it will continue on.
you can download the action pack here (you can just add more actions for resizing to suit your dimensions or do it manually by going to canvas and -2px when you are done making your gif before saving) there are two settings - one for 4k/HD and the other for HD where the sharpening is a little softer.
obviously, the higher quality the source footage, the better your gif looks. i tend to work with 1080p downloads and I rip my own blurays and save them at around 4GB per 40 minute episodes and 12-15GB for films. sometimes more depending on the length of the film.
external hard drives are your friends. if you are going to be giffing stuff often, keep them saved there. I have a ton of externals (which are in dire need of organisation) but it's so much quicker to have stuff at hand than needing to download each time you want to gif.
as for trailers - you get far higher quality using the trailers posted to the apple trailer site than youtube. so check there if you can get it. i use this site to download them and it does make a difference.
SAVING YOUR GIF
it's all down to personal preference what you like - but I use these settings when saving my gifs. you can play around with diffusion, pattern and noise etc to find what you think looks best for you. just remember that your gif must be under 10MB or else it won't upload to tumblr.
EXAMPLES
here are some examples of more gifs made using the sharpen action.
and this is the above moon knight gif, but using the slightly less sharper setting. sometimes it's best to test out both on footage you haven't used before to see which you prefer.
i hope this helped and if you have any questions my askbox is open! a like if you download the action would also be very appreciated.
hii i was wondering how you blend gifs such as this one? it’s something i wanna start doing but haven’t got the slightest clue how🥹
hi there !! blending is definitely one of the more fiddly aspects of gifmaking, but i'm happy to help !! before i start, here's some tutorials that really helped me out/look really helpful:
before you start, you should have a basic knowledge in how to colour your gifs, sharpen, etc etc. if you want any information on that, feel free to send me another ask for that.
i use photoshop 2022 for all my creations. and big disclaimer my process is VERY different to to others, but i don’t think it should change too much of your result.
1. create two gifs.
you’re going to start by creating two entirely separate gifs. when you’re blending, i find that it is typically easier if you can get two types of shots (mid, far, close up, that kind of thing) because it makes it easier to blend later on.
here we can see robin is kind of more of a mid shot on the right, but the left shot is zoomed in on her face to make it the focus.
from here, ensure your gifs have the same amount of frames and layers. you can delete the excess frames + layers to get them at the same amount. (eg. one gif had 42 frames, and the other 15, so i selected every layer + frame past 15 and deleted them.)
2. combining your gifs.
this is where it can all get a little hairy quick !! start by selecting all your layers, and putting them in a group. you can then rename that group so you can tell them apart when you duplicate them. then, select all your frames, change the frame delay to 0.05 and go from there.
now, pay attention to this bit. you’re going to take ONE gif over to the other. to do that, click on the four lines i highlighted up ^^ and go to copy frames. make sure all your frames are still selected. then, go to the gif we’re going to place the other gif on, and go to those same four lines but press ‘paste frames’ this time. this menu will come up:
click the exact same one i have highlighted, then press ‘okay’. now, your frames and layers have copied over. you should have two folders, and the gif you were copying will probably be the only one you see, but don’t worry ! your other gif is just underneath.
3. blending your gifs.
this part differs for each creator, but here’s how i do it. select the top layer that you want to blend in, and open this dropdown menu:
you’ll want to select either ‘lighten’ or ‘screen’. choose whichever looks better. your gif will now look like this:
so now we’re going to blend !
because of the negative space behind robin in the gif underneath, i’m going to try and move the top gif into it. how you blend and where is kind of down to just a visual thing. so, i’ll move my layers into that space and then i’ll properly begin blending.
now that i moved both of my gifs it leaves these pesky lines behind:
to blend them out, do the following:
select the folder itself.
go down to this bottom bar, and select the circled icon (it’s a layer mask):
now, you have a layer mask. to use it, go over to your brush colours on the side bar (pictured below)
and make sure it’s on black. if it isn’t, you won’t be able to blend. after this, go to the gradient tool (in between the rubber and the blur tool on that same sidebar) and make sure your gradient looks similar to this:
if you need to change it, click on that gradient, go to basics, go the one with the checkers and change the colours to black. now, go back to your layer mask, making sure that your gradient tool is selected and create little increments going across that line. make sure you work horizontally, otherwise it’ll blend your gif away.
then, just keep doing that until you’re getting results you’re happy with. i’ve done a layer mask on both layers, and i’ll show you a tip in case you need to do that as well. but for now, do a rough blend with the gradient tool.
after that, go to the brush tool, and change your brush to a soft round brush, probably on 75-100. you can brush over spots you want to blend, as it allows you to be more particular.
this is what my gif looks like now:
from here, you colour each gif in their respective folders, convert to timeline -> convert to smart object, sharpen and save !! this is my final result:
Gifmaking/general photoshopping tips and tricks for beginners (and not)
Hi all! Before we start, I’d like to tell that I’m no expert in any way and everyone should work they way they are comfortable with, these are just some things that I’ve collected over the years to make my life a little easier. And hopefully, yours too. There’s no particular order. I’ll try to keep this nice and short. Let’s get down the rabbit hole, weee! WARNING: IMAGE/GIF /TEXT HEAVY!
Tip #1: Use cropping presets
Instead of typing dimensions by hand, use cropping presets for quick access. To do that, chose the Crop Tool, type in your dimensions, then go down the dropdown menu on the left and chose New Crop Preset. Tada! You saved your settings for further use. Here are some of mine
Tip #2: If available, work with video timeline instead of frame animation
I personally think that it’s much handy and saves you from a lot of unnecessary clicks, plus you can do a lot of effects (such as text animating etc) without too much trouble. It all comes down to personal preference tho, of course. Here's super useful in-depth tutorial on how to make gifs with video timeline
Tip #3: When working with colors (especially very vibrant ones), convert your document from 8 bit to 16 bit first
I bet many of you come across this issue: when you work with colors and using brush tool, the visible stripes may appear and ruin your whole image/gif. Like this:
It’s called color banding. Ugly, right? Without too much of technical terms banding happens when an image loses its colors after being digitized (e.g. screencaps, or basically anything that was captured using any capable device). Bad news is that you can’t fully fix it because you can’t restore what’s been lost for good (here’s a great and detailed walk-down on what banding is and how to fix it). But what you can do, is make it less visible. To do that, open your document, and before doing anything with it, go to image > mode > 16 bit. (32 bit is more advanced, i never use it because 16 bit is quite enough for my work) It adds more color depth (or should i say imitates it) to the document, so now when you work on your gifs, the color stripes won’t be as harsh. Another way to fix color banding is to add noise manually. But I prefer to switch image modes because photoshop does a better job at adding more natural kind of noise and it’s barely visible to the eye
Tip #4 (requires video timeline): when slowing down gifs, change the amount of FPS
Sometimes when you slow gifs down they may look kind of choppy. A quick way to fix that is go to your video timeline, click on the three lines button, chose Set Timeline Frame Rate and change the number in the pop-up window. The higher the number, the smoother it will be, but don’t overdo it. I personally go from 60 to 120 FPS and see what looks best for my case. Some times it's barely noticeble, some times it can make a huge difference
Tip #5 There’s no quick solution to anything
Well it’s not exactly a tip, more of an advice actually. I know many of us want our work come to life as fast as possible, preferably, exactly in a way how it was in our mind. But for better or for worse, nothing in this like works like that. So when you make gifs, remember that there’s no «universal» psd coloring, sharpening, blend mode, texture, etc that works exactly the same in every case. Bc every scene is different, the lighting is different, the original color grading is different. As soon as you get used to that, it won’t be a problem anymore. So don’t get scared or discouraged when something doesn’t happen in a matter of «poof» — it’s completely normal. Don’t be too hard on yourself, don’t rush things, take your time and don’t try to be «like that person who’s gifs I like very much». It’s wonderful to get inspired, but try and discover your own tools and ways to work, something that will make your work unique and maybe even becomes sort of your personal signature. Most of the things I did came out of pure experiments i liked the end result of
Tip #6: Discover the power of blend modes and opacity
Don’t be scared to play around with the layers you use, they don’t have to be untouched, on the contrary, they should be modified in ways to achieve interesting results. For example: original gif with only sharpening applied (16 bit mode)
Colored with a whole bunch of Gradient Maps on different blend modes and opacity settings (also 16 bit mode. Not my best work but it pretty much illustrates the point)
Tip #7: Uncheck the «Delete cropped pixels» option in Crop Tool
Sometimes when you do gifs, you often find yourself wanting to reposition them because you feel they’re not quite in the right place, but this happens It’s because this option is checked and Photoshop deletes everything what’s outside of canvas once applied. When it’s unchecked, it just hides those pixels away, so you can freely move your image around whenever you want (not the best example but you get the idea)
Tip #8: Use text boxes instead of individual text layers
That’s pretty self-explanatory. It looks much, much better. Take your Text Tool, drag it across the document to create a box, then paste/type your text and you’re done! Here's a great and detailed guide on subtittles.
And that's about it folks! Have fun being creative :) And if you have any questions, don't hesitate to drop 'em in my askbox.
