This year marks the 20th anniversary of Rice Boy! Hooray!!! 🥳
Sit back with a nice plate of orange popping plants and spend a while re-reading (or reading for the first ever time! wow!) the epic tale of Rice Boy over at rice-boy.com, by the incredible @evandahm!
Also, we have a few Rice Boy things on the site, including two prints of a lovingly drawn Rice Boy wandering the lands of Overside. 🚶♂️🌱
Happy holidays from the Belt!
Here's a totally normal Christmas card featuring A, Basil, Winnie, and Orion. Look at these characters, they're all having a grand time and definitely not going through the horrors <3 You absolutely should look at this card very closely with your screen brightness turned all the way up.

"The Drowned Halls" - Death Come Quickly
I have learned that tumblr limits you to 5000 blogs to follow. Hence my frustration at not being able to follow more art blogs
Probably because I followed everyone who liked my posts… oops
The first 2500 people to submit Victoria Dallon art shall be spared
The others shall face my scythe (unfollow button)
it is truly incredible how nearly 20 years after the release of paprika, the themes and symbolism that satoshi kon was exploring feel more relevant than when it released. the parade as a representation of complete societal assimilation through materialism, religion, politics, and technology converging on this sort of worldwide cultural madness is such a specific feeling and phenomenon, kon is a genius for foreseeing all of ..this.. coming back in 2006. the internet, and now LLMs/AI generated content, as the great equalizer, regurgitating ideologies, movements, forms, into this worldwide collective unconscious that cannot, will not be stopped. humanity, all of our flaws and joy, converging in on itself in a frenzied fervor, repeating, forever and ever.
satoshi kon was taken from this world far far too young, i feel not just japanese animation, but surrealist cinema in general lost an incredibly thoughtful and boundlessly creative dreamer. may kon's dreams continue to inspire, forever and ever and ever.

Piranesi concept art!
I hadn’t seen anyone really tackle the drowned halls yet (as far as I know) so I thought I’d take a crack at it to practice painting environments
Unintentionally ominous sign a friend took a photo of at a JoAnn's that's closing.

it is so meaningful to me that the Beloved Child of the House chooses to go back to our world, and has to be reborn anew as a mix of who he was (Matthew, brought up in this world of Cartesianism detached and lonely but surrounded by others) and of who he became (the Beloved Child, Piranesi, in communion with the House, representing the ideal of humanity in harmony, but alone). Raphael points out towards the end: so long as there are people in its halls then there will be Ugliness (murder, imprisonment, etc) alongside its Beauty, and likewise in the very last moments of the book the man who is no longer M.R.R nor Piranesi seems to see the House's beauty inside the people who surround him (recognizing in them the statues; the way the prose, for the very last breaths of the book, turns into a careful description of the world, mirroring the Beloved Child's descriptions of the House). They not only mirror one another, but flow from and into one another. One could literally not exist without the other.
And it is the same with his change. He is one and the same, but he is also separate. He will never go back to who he was, but he cannot become who he is without being who he was. The man who is not M.R.R nor Piranesi will always long for the House, because he is Piranesi and he is human and so he belongs there; and if he returned to the House he would long for our world, because he is M.R.R and he is human and so he belongs here. So he must see one in another, and in that find his home.
And it is bittersweet, because this means loss is inevitable, and so is longing. Means one must walk across worlds, and make the walking home. To be complete one must be many separate parts. but that is being human.
His time in the Halls allowed him to experience the bliss of pure existence, to understand the world, to access the beautiful, distilled essence of everything; he accessed the realm of Ideas, and understood them deeply, in complete unobstructed connection with them. And now that he must remember, now that he must be here, that he must bear the grime and smoke of the inharmonious world, contend with what was done to him, contend with what was lost and its consequences-- he has not forgotten the House. It is a knowledge he brings with him: what it is to be the Beloved Child of the world, what it is when the world is whole and he fits perfectly inside it. So he reaches, in the very last moment, what to me reads like synthesis. to get lost in the realm of Ideas is not our task, as getting lost in the rejection of it is not our task. People cannot get back the world where men turned into birds (and it perhaps never even existed, being only a misinterpretation born of the modern academic's myopic gaze; as Piranesi says, the world speaks to him all the time). he cannot get back the version of himself rid of the trauma and grief of what happened to him. Yet: the House is still always within and around him. He may not be able to be just the Beloved Child anymore, but once the grief of is soothed, he sees that he never left it behind.
the House is born from the world and the world is born from the House in an infinite loop, one and the same: it is our task to be part of it. To bear witness. To be in communion and conversation with it. It is our task to live. its our home.
Watched encanto a few days ago. All the family's problems were caused by getting immense power when they were literally toddlers.
And by bruno
...isn't. isn't encanto similar to worm in how it uses superpowers as representations of the character's problems
I love Encanto so much. I love Worm so much. I’m not a great writer but I have thought about this a lot. The ironic nature of the “gifts” playing into the miseries of the characters is so baked in.
Bruno’s tragically horrible at being tactful and totally neurotic, but people listen to every single word he says and interpret it for the worst since he can see the future. Feedback loop, least popular Madrigal in the Encanto serving as a harbinger of ill.
Pepa can control the weather, but only insomuch as she can control herself. Every time she’s upset she makes it everyone else’s problem, so she can’t be upset.
Julieta can heal all ills, but she can’t come even close to healing what is wrong with every member of her family.
Luisa is strong, but her strength erodes her boundaries as people need her abilities.
Isabela has conditionally beautiful plant powers that are a visual reminder that she must constrain herself to be loved.
Dolores hears everything, which makes it more painful as people overlook her.
I think the main thing that is essentially different about the two power systems is the fact that the Encanto powers were born of unconditional love and the Jesus-coded sacrifice of Pedro. The way they become miserable is Abuela’s trauma, and when that can be addressed the gifts can serve as healthy expressions of self for the family again. If I could write better, I’d do a crossover with the worm from worm, but I think it’d be 100k words and it would have 2 readers.
And Camilo’s gift is to be anyone except himself.
Antonio’s gift breaks the pattern: a shy boy gains friends, and a desire to speak on their behalf. I believe this is due to the popular theory that Mirabel chose this gift, rather than Abuela, as part of coming of age into leadership of the Encanto.
More irony here is that Mirabel didn’t get a gift- she is the gift!
