I a new article Mother Jones presents May Mailman (photo), a senior Trump policy strategist portrayed as a chief architect of the administration's campaign to redefine sex in federal policy and "eradicate" what it calls "gender ideology." It is a fascinating and tragic story about what happens if you give a reactionary fanatic access to power.

The article opens with Mailman celebrating a Day 1 executive order, "Defending Women From Gender Ideology Extremism and Restoring Biological Truth to the Federal Government," which defines "woman" as an adult human female and frames sex as immutable, rooted in reproductive biology. Conservative figures such as Riley Gaines and Megyn Kelly praise the order and credit Mailman as a principal author.

The story traces Mailman's path from the first Trump White House -where she became close to the hard core fascist and racist Stephen Miller- to the Independent Women's Forum, where she promoted "Women's Bill of Rights" model legislation enshrining narrow definitions of male and female.

Mother Jones argues the anti-trans project has broader goals: limiting inclusive interpretations of sex-discrimination law and reshaping gender norms.
