For so long Bia heard men saying that it was hard to find a woman who preferred books to shoes. Bia loves shoes and is also a PhD in French Literature. She never really understood the so-called incompatibility between her passions."

To emphasize how truly backward our society is...let's finish with a little quiz. Let's do it like Jeopardy. In 1990, this government required companies to give a new mother a year's leave at 90% pay. Answer: What was Sweden? This country provided nurseries for most children over eighteen months. Answer: What was Sweden? Nearly half of the children under three in this country were in publicly financed nurseries, and nearly 95% of children three to six were (and are). Answer: What is Denmark? In this country, 95% of children aged three to five are in preschool. Answer: What is France? This country provides care for one quarter of children under three in wholly or partially subsidized nurseries. Answer: What is France? In 1984, this country gave workers twelve weeks of maternity leave with pay. Answer: What is Brazil? (Yes, Brazil!) This country mandated eight weeks of maternity leave WITH PAY. Answer: What is Kenya? (You heard us, Kenya!) This country provided none of these things; instead, to help mothers and small children, its magazines featured profiles of rich celebrity moms who could show women how to do it all. Answer: What was the United States?

Don't you see what's happened? You wanted to be in love again. To feel that feeling where a man you hardly know gazes into your eyes and seems to be the only human being who ever understood the real you.
Nancy Horan, Loving Frank
The world offers you comfort. But you were not made for comfort. You were made for greatness.
Pope Benedict XVI
I'm very interested in the actual act of dying, which is the last great human action that we have in our lives. It's the one event in our lives that no one can describe adequately because nobody comes back to talk about it.
Stephen King
Those in the Catholic Church, whom some rebuke for praying to Saints and going on pilgrimages, do not seek any Saint as their savior. Instead, they Seek saints as those whom their Savior loves, and whose intercession and prayer for the seeker He will be content to hear. For His Own sake, He would have those He loves honored. And when they are thus honored for His sake, then the honor that is given them for His sake overflows especially to Himself.
St Thomas More (via catholic-inspiration)
If you read the first three chapters of first Corinthians, you will see that denominationalism was not just a scandal, but absolutely unthinkable and intolerable to Saint Paul because denominationalism is not the multiplying of a sub division of an organization, it’s the amputation of limbs from an organism.
Peter Kreeft
Let no one say that 'man' instituted the Sacrament of Penance; no man would ever have given to it such a form. A man is not naturally so reverential or so amiable in regard to another that he would willingly lay open his whole soul even to a stranger, as millions of Christians do each week. Let no one say that officials of the Church invented this Sacrament of Mercy, for if they had, human as they are they would have surely excluded themselves from its humiliations. Yet no priest, no bishop, no cardinal...is immune from the necessity of confession. Let those who say it was instituted by a priest try sitting in the stuffy confessional boxes of our churches for hours on Saturdays, listening to the routine misgivings and failings of human nature, and he will know it is the most trying of all the priest's labors--yet sweet because he knows and feels that he is carrying on the blessed ministrations of Our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.
Archbishop Fulton Sheen
I used to wear Baptist glasses which obscured such verses from my vision.

okay does anyone else find it kind of strange that dove makes chocolate and body soap
Dove Chocolate is made by the Masterfoods company (Mars - who also makes M&Ms and Snickers bars). The name comes from the Dove Ice Cream bars and then they came up with a line of chocolate. Dove Soap, and the Dove Beauty Bar, are part of the Unilever corporation which is a huge multinational conglomerate that makes personal care and cleaning products. :)
Another belief of mine: that everyone else my age is an adult, whereas I am merely in disguise.
Margaret Atwood
There is nothing to writing. All you do is sit down at a typewriter and bleed.
Ernest Hemingway
The Bible was indeed never meant for private interpretation of Scripture. That is why Christ established one Church.
Be in the World, Not of the World—Kind of like Lucky Charms cereal: there are lots of pretty marshmallows in with the cereal, but they’re not the same. So live with the cereal, but remember: you’re a pretty marshmallow.
Laura Jensen Walker Becca by the Book
But now I saw the real problem with chasing after a man. It wasn't a matter of being unseemly or socially unacceptable or not playing the game right. It was just this: if I chase him, I'll never really know if he cares enough to chase me.
Laura Jensen Walker Dreaming in Technicolor
Society conspires against her from early infancy. Her brain is steadily filled with plaster until it sets: 'If you're not married by the time you're twenty-five, you'll have good reason to be ashamed'; 'if you laugh, you won't look dignified' ; 'if your face betrays your feelings, you'll look coarse'; 'if you mention the existence of a single body hair, you're repulsive' ; 'if a boy kisses you on the cheek in public, you're a whore'; if you enjoy eating, you're a pig'; 'if you take pleasure in sleeping, you're no better than a cow'; and so on. These precepts would be merely anecdotal if they weren't taken so much to heart.
Amelie Nothomb; Fear and Trembling
Sometimes you read a book and it fills you with this weird evangelical zeal and you become convinced that the shattered world will never be put back together unless and until all living humans read that book.
John Green (The Fault In Our Stars)
