30 DAYS OF GAME OF THRONES Day 03: Favourite animal/creature → Direwolves
A friend of mine recently finished George R. R. Martin’s A Song of Ice and Fire (ASOIAF), and she asked me if I had any recommendations for essays or podcasts focused on analysis/theory. My immediate response was, “OH BOY DO I.” Because that’s the kind of reader I am. I may not watch the show […]
“I promise you, no matter where you flee, Robert’s wrath will follow you, to the back of beyond if need be.”
The queen stood. “And what of my wrath, Lord Stark?” she asked softly. Her eyes searched his face.

I loved a maid as fair as summer, with sunlight in her hair
I loved a maid as red as autumn, with sunset in her hair
I loved a maid as white as winter, with moonglow in her hair
Arianne Week || Prompt: Family
“We princes make our careful plans and the gods smash them all awry.” Prince Doran made a weary gesture with a chafed red hand. “Dorne will be yours. You have my word on that, if my word still has any meaning for you. Your brother Quentyn has a harder road to walk… he has gone to bring us back our hearts desire,”
She narrowed her eyes. “What is our heart’s desire?”
“Vengeance.” His voice was soft, as if he were afraid that someone might be listening. “Justice.” Prince Doran pressed the onyx dragon into her palm with his swollen, gouty fingers, and whispered, “FIRE AND BLOOD.”

Queen and Useless Lesbian in the North, Sansa Stark
Make Me Choose: Direwolves or dragons
It's said that direwolves once roamed the north in great packs of a hundred or more, and feared neither man nor mammoth...
Talk to me about warging and the Direwolves! Esp Sansa and Lady.
I am kind of obsessed with the idea of like… latent magic. Magic that was never able to develop. I am working on a meta about Sansa and the loss of Lady and what that means. I’m exploring things like whether or not a wolf can have a half life in their human… etc but I also just want to talk about the warging with ALL the Stark children.
Talk to me about the theme of DENYING one’s own magic or not wanting to face it! Like how the older Starks always seem to deny or not fully understand their bond to their wolves and it leads to their death (Robb and Jon.) And then how the youngest are the most in tune with the idea of warging- it almost seems like the younger you are, the better when it comes to this.
Talk to me about Rickon and how feral he’s become since he’s been on his own- but also because of being bonded to Shaggydog at such a young age.
Talk to me about the inverse parallel of Jon having a direwolf named “Ghost,” who is alive while he is currently dead and Sansa having a dead wolf- a ghost wolf- but she is still alive. And talk to me about what that is like- to survive your direwolf. To survive your magical soulmate gahhhhh.
Talk to me about Bran and Summer and Bran’s uncanny understanding of what it meant that Sansa lost Lady. And how he talks often of “Lady’s shade.”
Talk to me about what Jon might be like if he comes back after spending an extended amount of time in Ghost.
TALK TO ME about Arya and how she originally suffered the lost Nymeria as well- but how she became a strong enough warg to warg her on a different continent and how she DRAGGED HER MOTHER out of the river when she was inside Nymeria.
Talk to me about Catelyn and how she was originally distrustful of the direwolves but grew to realize their power and protection. How she is a mother of wargs. Talk to me of Ned’s realization and grief after killing Lady- and how he sent her bones to Winterfell. Talk to me about the symbolism of the direwolves’ names.
Talk to me about how Ghost never howls! Talk to me about the conversation between Theon and Jon in the very first chapter about Ghost. Talk to me about how there was no wolf for Theon because he is not a Stark but how he bonded and became one of Ramsay’s hounds. Just talk to me about this! lol. Please. I’ll even open up anons again for this lol.
You know what would be really cool ? If the Stark kids were not simply wargs but had an even deeper connection to their wolves. We already know that there is magic in the Stark bloodline and that all the Stark children are skinchangers to some degree, even then the relationship they have with the wolves it's depicted as fey.
Now imagine it's not only the wolves that act more behaved but the children who, in turns, become more wild.
At the beginning Ned and Catelyn don't take notice of it; their children have always been active and being six of them turned them into a naturally tight group, so if Robb and Jon’s spars were a bit more violent and the youngers tended to follow much closer their older siblings, well, it wasn’t something they wouldn’t outgrow with time.
In the end it was Sansa that tipped their parents off; the sweetest of their children had almost bitten Jayne Poole’s head off for an unkind remark on Jon Snow. The Lord and Lady Stark were appalled, out of their brood Sansa had always been the coldest towards her half brother, never one to stray too far from her mother’s teachings.
From then on they started to pay more attention. It was the small things they noticed first: how Arya and Sansa, while always bickering, didn’t put the same venom as before into it, how only a look from Robb could make Bran come down from his climbing and keep him there when nor Catelyn nor Ned would ever succeed, how activities they used to do alone where now moved in one room. It was in the way Sansa’s smile, while always pretty, had enough teeth to look like a snarl; in the way Jon would stalk the halls as silent as his Ghost; in the way Arya seemed to turn just a second before someone would approach her and in the way, when angry, Rickon’s eyes would look just a bit green.
It was also in the way all of Ned’s children seemed to favour meat just on this side of raw.
Ned wasn't stupid, he much like his children has grown up with the tales of Old Nan, but the tales of past generations never mentioned too bright eyes and a predilection for freshly butchered game.
Still, the way his children are now behavig may be slightly unsettling but they have banded together more tightly than ever and, as every Stark knows, when Winter comes only the pack survives.
