A minecraft death can mean everything in a hardcore world but exactly nothing in a keepInventory world. It can be a slight but not that bothersome annoyance, or a plotpoint to an ongoing story. You can't really put a clear description on what it means, because they're always individual and different. Per server, per player and per situation.

Implying deaths in minecraft are always excruciatingly painful doesn't do justice to the quickly done kills for head decoration, and saying they're all meaningless and should be ignored storywise doesn't do the actually meaningful ones justice. Every death in the life series counts, but on hermitcraft, can you really imply that they're just that much more lax and careless with their lives? There's no limited amount, for sure, but the deaths can still mean something. Or mean exactly nothing and be accidental.

It is SUCH an interesting topic to discuss and theorize about - and a main reason I can't get over Tango's S8 actually </3
