In another universe?
Some day I’d like to read a fantasy story that part way through genre changes into a post-apocalypse story as you slowly realise that the reason for magic and other races like elves and dwarves existing is because of mutations from a nuclear blast years ago that wiped out a majority of humanity and reset everything back to basics. They use swords and ride horses because there’s literally no modern technology left.
There’s a mage with the ‘touch of death’ who is actually just giving everyone around them radiation poisoning.

And a ‘miracle healer’ who actually just happened to find a medicine university textbook from 2020 and therefore knows how to disinfect wounds and uses ‘blood magic’ (he takes blood samples and uses rudimentary methods to test for iron levels and the like)

I only just started watching game of thrones and I find it so genuinely funny how there are only 2 accents so far, Yorkshire and posh bitch. it doesn’t matter what part of the north you’re from you just get hit with the Sean bean ray.
where supergirl 2026 comes into its own for me is that final fight scene, where all of those threats are coming at ruthye and kara is protecting her from every single one. i'm so compelled by this aspect of the movie that is the utter helplessness of being protected. ruthye can't do anything. she can't even put herself into danger—fight back, kill krem—because kara handles it all before she's able to. it's kind of the strange reality of being a child, of thinking you can take care of yourself and the people around you, but you can't. you are at the mercy of other people to choose to keep you safe. just like kara on krypton—she wants to die with her family, but she doesn't get the choice, because they save her. it's incredibly disempowering, in a way. neither of them get agency in their own protection. but then kara gets to have this agency in protecting ruthye—in becoming the protector—and ruthye is awed by this. i think they had some great ideas there
Just realised that the island from decendants basically has the same story as how modern Australia was formed
A second set of headcannons for each fellowship member because they don’t leave my head.
Before bilbo and Frodo’s journeys, gandalfs tendency to take tooks on long adventures were basically his version of a father (or more accurately a grandfather) taking a day off work to spend it with the kids since it’s what he likes to do when his isn’t busy being a royal advisor to every nation of middle earth. That’s why he felt so much more whimsical in the hobbit before he realised he actually needed to lock in because everything was getting a lot more dangerous than expected and prior to blibos journey the ‘grand excursions’ of the tooks were all quite harmless.
Aragorn sleeps like the dead. Not in the way that it’s difficult to wake him up but instead in the way that the others swear he doesn’t even breathe. Every single night at least one fellowship member checks his pulse just to make sure on their watch shift but are all to embarrassed to admit it.
Legolas is a picky eater but feels awful about it. He knows damn well that everyone puts so much effort into collecting and cooking proper meals but he isn’t used to the plants and meats being any less than prepared to the perfection of his taste, the thought of many of them makes him feel ill. Elves don’t need to eat as much as other groups so he isn’t even bothered without the additional meals but still he is so thankful when they get to Lothlórien because he doesn’t have to come up with excuses anymore with the lembas bread.
Gimli is stuck without being able to reach the back of his hair to comfortably rebrand and brush it because he doesn’t feel able to ask another who isn’t his family to do it for him against dwarvish custom. This is until he remembers that Frodo is bilbos nephew and bilbo was named kin by his father and therefore close enough that he allows it. A few weeks later, after many reassurances that they wouldn’t mess with his hair outside of what they were instructed to do, he permits merry and pippin to do the same since as frodos cousins they could also arguably be extended family.
Boromir is genuinely unused to seeing blue skies everyday because of how the dark cloud from Mordor spread to Minas Tirith during his youth. He feels wierdly exposed for much of the journey apart from when it’s stormy, on those occasions he visably brightens, he’s far more open about his past too since it makes him feel nostalgic.
Frodo is the tallest hobbit at the start of the journey but the shortest by the end both because he stops feeling as hungry due to the influence of the ring and the malnourishment stunts his growth but also because of the weight of the ring around his neck pressing down upon him stopping any growth in the same way it keeps bilbo stagnant. (Plus merry and pippin drinking the ent draught and having major height spurts didn’t help)
Sam despite being very social, needs at least an hour every night on his own. The so named ‘bugger off’ time is always at sunset, he sits often against a rock facing it, occasionally joined by Aragorn who he can both trust to not try to break the silence and needs a good amount of time away from their rowdy company too. This habit breaks with the fellowship since he refuses to let Frodo out of his sight.
Merry is scarily good at calculating distance and memorising routes. At the end of every day when they settle down to rest he will be prompted and will always be able to give the mileage they’ve traveled give or take a few. This ability is sorely missed when the 3 hunters are trying to track him and pippin down.
Pippin is deadly serious about hygiene. You wouldn’t think it considering his laid back attitude but he has a really weak immune system plus had a tendency to wander off into bramble bushes and the like as a kid. After some truly awful infections alongside near constant illness, he has become very strict about every and any possible causes of disease. he subtlety ensures other members wash their hands before they eat, use soap when rinsing the bowls out, disinfect even the smallest of cuts and don’t eat anything too rank (mostly by loudly announcing that he’s about to, meaning that everyone else would have to make a noticeable choice to not be hygienic if they did not follow)

I just realised something that’s going to annoy the hell out of me on every single future rewatch of Lord of the rings. Faramir and Boromir, brothers raised by the same people, in the same place with the same social standing and position have different fucking accents.
Boromir has an obvious Yorkshire accent meanwhile faramir has a southern ‘proper’ accent. This will never stop bothering me now. EVERYONE else in minas tirith sounds southern except godamn Boromir.
For any American this is the equivalent of a family having posh ass voices but one random member who is has an obvious Texan accent and it’s never explained
A lotr headcanon that I wholeheartedly believe is that ‘Gandalf’ was the original hobbitish word for grandfather. Either because like the elves they came up with their own name for him and that was the best one to describe what he is to them or because that word came from the kindly elderly man who’d often guide them to safety in the wandering days.
A headcannon for each fellowship character!
Gandalf will absolutely make stories up about ancient ancestors of the people he’s talking to both when he thinks it’s funny and to have a cautionary tale to scold them with. A good 50% of them have made their way into history books and are now accepted fact.
Aragorn has a dogshit alcohol tolerance because he spent basically his entire life with the rangers who couldn’t afford to get drunk due to their duties. The hobbits of course find this the funniest thing imaginable and regularly insult him using it.
Legolas is the only member of the fellowship who cannot fix his own clothes and because elves are not used to the kind of on foot muddy journeys that the fellowship take and as such did not make their clothing to fit it he has to keep going to Sam to help him fix it (he would ask aragorn if he was certain that he wouldn’t use some ghastly unfitting colour to patch on top, Sam understands aesthetics). By the end of the journey, his entire wardrobe is ruined.
Gimli is an incredible artist. He has a massive sketchbook which is supposed to be for architecture and tool designs but he ends up just drawing all manners of scenes and sights he witnesses over the course of the journey (a few of them being far more sappy than he would like to admit to like Legolas plaiting his hair and the hobbits in the cuddle pile they slept in) Many of these illustrations end up in the original red book.
Boromir is the most isolated when it comes to meeting other races since at least the shire had regular dwarven visitors on their way to the blue mountains whilst minas truths closest neighbour was Mordor. He spends much of his time simply doing his best to understand what the fuck the others are saying as well as not step over too many cultural differences (which merry and pippin use to their advantage). He does love learning the different languages though.
Frodo is genuinely terrifying when it comes to picking up languages. Gimli sometimes talks to himself in a mix of Khuzdul and common which gives enough context for approximate translation and is left in a state of panic when he realises he accidentally taught Frodo a substantial amount of everyday conversation and swears. Frodo always has perfect pronunciation and after a while of circling Mordor and running into orcs he picks up black speech but would never dare to tell anyone.
Merry has nearly waist length hair by the time he returns to the shire because he couldn’t care enough to cut it while away and wanted to look like eowyn because she’s cool as fuck. Due to this he is the one who is most mistaken for merely being a short member of another race because one of the few known facts about hobbits is that they are the only race to keep their hair short.
Pippin is the best singer of the fellowship (even Legolas) and he can play basically any instrument. This was found out in the celebration after the battle of helms deep when he kept getting passed different instruments for his use and to the men’s surprise he could play each and every one (this quickly became an investigation to try to find a singular instrument which he couldn’t with many running to their homes to collect old family heirloom cellos, penny whistles, harmonicas or even in one memorable instance a grand piano)
Something I find so funny about movie cannon is that the entire shire literally lost all 3 of their main heirs in one night and no one knew where they fucking went.
Like imagine the terror that would wreak on the government system. Hobbits don’t worry much about how government works just that it does so imagine the oh fuck we’ve got to find and train 3 new heirs to manage basically everything and no one ever bothered to really learn too much about how it works so it’s well and truly starting from scratch. should we send the shirrif after them? What if they were killed? do we have to actually threaten another nation then? Is this an act of war? What could we possibly do if it is?
Meanwhile Frodo, pippin and merry are just in Rivendell like :D
I have this headcannon that Micah was haunted by Arthur in the time between the epilogue and the main story
He can’t kill any stag he meets. Micah hates the blasted things so it’s not for lack of trying but every time one ends up in his crosshairs he finds himself physically unable to pull the trigger. The eyes are the worst. He can’t look into them without feeling frozen is some kind of instinctual terror.
A few years after the disbanding of the gang he starts coughing up blood. Turns out getting up close and in the face of the sickly guy your trying to kill after eating from the same bowl as them for months has a high probability of the sickness spreading.
He walks through a simple art exhibit in Saint Denis to scout out a robbery and amongst various close ups of wildlife that are honestly impressive with how close the photograph must have gotten to see them, Micah notices a portrait of him amongst the wilderness it appears to be taken without his notice he sits proud and as one with the nature surrounding him and it terrifies Micah. He runs away and instructs his men to raid the exhibit and burn the images.
He gets bored one day and reads an old Wild West novel, if only to laugh at its inaccuracy, only to see his name as a dedication in the front cover. Micah tosses it into a lake.
He gets shot, stripped of his weapons and held up by some lone woman on a forest road who recognised him not as Micah bell but as an old member of the van de linde gang. She doesn’t ask for money or for him to turn himself in but instead for information on him. Micah spits out how Morgan is long gone and is allowed to limp away hissing all the time.
He throws up anytime he eats venison, even just a small bite.
Just before he meets back up with Dutch in the epilogue, the story of him being the one to take out the gang breaks but that isn’t what he’s remembered for. Arthur had the second biggest bounty in the whole group he was the one on the front lines for every job, the one everyone was truly afraid of so Micah walks into saloons and is recognised as the guy who killed Arthur Morgan. Whenever it’s brought up it’s not to congratulate him it’s to gossip about Morgan’s crimes and what he was like in some strange awe.
By the time John comes to get revenge wearing that bastards hat of all things any mention of the name Arthur or Morgan has him aiming his pistol and firing at whoever dared to utter it.
He’s not guilty, he doesn’t feel bad for killing black lung if anything micah was glad that he was the one to beat the last bit of life out of his failing body but nevertheless Micahs once strong hatred has now morphed into fear of his memory. That murder ,for some reason he will never know, he cannot escape.
do you think that once the hobbits got back to the shire they realised they needed to slow their walking speed because they'd gotten used to walking a lot quicker around the tall folks for the months of the quest
