I think we could all use a little luck in light of recent events.
This smell.
Rain—-ash—-he’s smelled both before, but in different places. The fact that he smelled it now, in his own bedroom, a place where he felt safe—it leaves him greatly unsettled. But at the same time—-it makes him wonder.
Had someone granted his desire?
He’d wanted to go to Nowhere. Maybe this was some sort of…helping hand?
A trap?
Only one way to find out. The Freeshooter squares his shoulders, and then heads out of his bedroom, down the hall, and out of the ruined guard wing, before making his way out of the castle grounds, peering up at the sky, which had no sun or moon to give light, and yet—-there was light enough that he could see where he was. It brought with it an eerie feeling.
Before long, he walks along up a lonely street—devoid of other people, that was familiar, and only became more recognizable as he went.
And as he walked, the place he’d left behind was swallowed up in fog, disappearing from sight quickly- were he to try and backtrack, he’d only find a road that was out in the worst way-- a steep drop off into a bottomless ravine. He had indeed been granted his desire, and he was on the way to Nowhere.
It was an inbetween sort of place, unlike the rest of this strange, warped land, but a part of it all the same. Nowhere could only be found when it wanted to be, and it so rarely did. Some even assumed it didn’t exist at all, but Xigbar knew better. He’d been there. A strange landscape of rusted grating, dense fog, ash that fell from the sky like snow. Rusted scaffoldings that reared into the sky, their tops lost in the fog above. Strange cals far distant.
Few would seek this place out on purpose.
The distant creaking of unstable Castle turrets were easy to tune out as he thought, one hand resting in his lap, legs crossed as he sat upon his bed, while the other tapped idly against his temple. It only served to annoy him.
Sighing, the gunman stops, and slides off the bed.
A gold eye raises from the floor, and he pauses, before taking one slow step towards the window, his expression shifting from one of thought, to one of wariness, even as he takes in the view of the darkening sky outside, listens to the rumble of thunder as the sound of rain began, sounding on the roof.
But nothing dripped in.
Xigbar turns abruptly as his door rattled, before cautiously stepping towards it, one hand raising, summoning his Sharpshooter as he took a step to the right of the door, and reached for the doorknob. Only once his nerves had steeled does he grip it, turn it, and pull it open, his body concealed behind it as it swung open, and he waited for whatever was on the other side to reveal itself.
No beast with needle fangs and ragged claws sprang for him when he opened the door so cautiously, no man with a knife and a lunatic crescent of a grin lunged for him. He was met only with the sound of the rain, and the smell of it-- and the changed castle. It was, if anything, even more ruined than before, and although the sky-- and sun-- wasn’t visible, there was an eerie ambient light that was enough to see by.
It wasn’t Nowhere, but it wasn’t far from it, relatively speaking. He just needed to take the step and go outside of his room. Someone had opened the door for him, but no one could make him step through it.
Were he to leave, he would find himself in familiar, but strange territory, until he left the castle grounds. Then he would find himself on the streets proper, and on his way to where he wanted to go.
“…I’ve been thinking about trying to get to Nowhere….”
The watery morning sunlight was typical of an early autumn day, and the wind was still outside of the gunman’s ruined quarters. There was scattered birdsong as well, those who were late finding warmer climes for the winter, and those who simply never left. There was no reason to believe that anything would come of his musing aloud, but something was about to.
The change was gradual, so gradual that doubtless he didn’t notice until the light had faded enough for it to look less like dawn, and more like dusk. With the fading of the light, came the fading of ambient sounds, not as if they’d been suddenly muted, but gradually seeming to become distant, until there was only silence. The light faded faster the darker it got and there was a rush of air, hot, not cold as it should have been, that carried with it ash, and a scent of hot metal... and dust.
Light, dim and not at all like the weak sunshine of before, suffused the area again, but the birdsong did not come back, instead replaced by the sound of rain pattering on the crumbling stones of the castle, and a distant rumble of thunder. His room hadn’t been changed at all, and in spite of the sound of the rain, none was coming into the hole in his roof. A low, creaking sound, as of metal on metal like a great ship being strained, and his door rattled slightly.
It seemed he had a choice to make.
“ And then came to your bedside And as it turns out, I’m not ready And as though you were speaking through a thick haze You said hello to me ….”

It’s not that fuckin’ hard. But eyyy. If people are willing to give this a try, I’ll get some ref images of the demon together and try to fix the trainwreck I call a blog theme. It could take me a little while to get everything fixed up, but in the mean time, you have any ideas?
