please keep in mind that learning is always a process. learning to draw, dance, play an instrument, but also learning to say no, learning to start conversations, learning to be more comfortable in your own skin. it’s great setting goals for yourself, as long as you allow yourself to get there gradually instead of immediately wanting to be the best at it (and setting unrealistic standards for yourself because of it). change is rarely a single moment during which everything suddenly shifts, but rather a period of time in which you learn and adjust and improve. you’ll get there, but you must give yourself time to do so.

I was watching a lecture on youtube for a class and thought you might share my interest in a delightful... hooved? "olephant" from the early 16th c! The video is titled "‘The ABC of Medieval English Writing’ by Daniel Wakelin" and the olephant shows up at 21:21.

You were right, it is delightful! And the entire manuscript (Bodleian Library MS. Ashmole 1504) is pretty cool too. It’s a pattern book (basically a collection of artistic inspiration and references copied from other sources) & most importantly for the purposes of this blog it has a whole section of animals:

the aforementioned olephant (fol. 034r)

an appropriately angry swan (fol. 036v)

this “lizard” that I love with my whole heart (fol. 039v)

and a page that feels like a gift specifically for me, feat. a cockatrice, a crocodile and some crayfish (fol. 038v)

eagle-eyed viewers will notice that it also features a strong contender for the funniest illustration of someone being eaten by a crocodile ever to exist
