This Black History Month, reflect for a moment on the fact that George Washington Carver, famously "the inventor of peanut butter and more than 100 industrial uses for peanuts" wasn't, like, Doc Brown fucking around in his garage because he really liked peanuts but was specifically trying to introduce larger use of a nitrogen fixing legume into crop rotations against cotton monoculture which was destroying yields, livelihoods and the biosphere, and how most agribusiness farming now just destroys that topsoil on purpose and continues to grow a cotton monoculture (or soy or corn or whichever local monoculture is profitable) using petrochemical derived fertilizer, which is one element driving climate change
Daniel Hale Williams performed the first successful heart surgery. He also founded the first nonsegregated hospital in America because he was keenly aware of disparate health outcomes by race which is still a problem today.
WEB Dubois was a part of the delegations for the birth of the UN. His proposal to include in the charter that "the colonial system of government … is undemocratic, socially dangerous and a main cause of wars" was not adapted for the final draft. We might see inaction against colonial violence to this day as part of the failure of others to heed his warnings there.
I feel like so often when we look at Black History Month so much of it is driven by factoids but when taken as history in context its about a direct line from decades and centuries to what is happening right now.
A good educational post to spread around. Happy Black History month pals. 💕🤗
Even if ICE retreats from Minnesota, the system has to go.
Even if Kristi Noem is impeached, the system has to go.
Even if ICE is defunded, the system has to go.
Even if the right withdraws, the system has to go.
Even if Trump dies, the system has to go.
Even if a liberal is elected president, the system has to go.
Any institution that lets fascism rise is one that's fundamentally broken.
We have the unique opportunity to change the foundations of the US for the better and we can't waste it.

Figure down from 4% in April, suggesting Israel has continued to target farmland in once-abundant Gaza Strip
Strongly recommend giving what you can to the Arab Group for the Protection of Nature's Gaza work, which is actively restoring and utilising farmland in Gaza to grow and provide food especially fresh vegetables.
*preparing to go outside* i'm normal. i know how to cross the street. i avoid eye contact in an organic non weird way, as if i simply do not notice fellow pedestrians.

Project Pure Hope - Project Pure Hope is a humanitarian healthcare initiative founded by a group of senior doctors and healthcare leaders who are deeply concerned about the plight of children affected by the Middle East conflict. We are working with local and international partners to transfer children requiring complex treatment and care to the UK. This initiative is important as some of these children require specialist, multidisciplinary medical treatment which is available in the UK but currently unavailable in the region. It will also deliver remote services/telemedicine to the hospitals and clinics that are struggling to cope with the overwhelming needs in the area. Treatment will be delivered privately using expertise of UK specialist centres. Funds will be utilized for this specific purpose.
Kinder Relief - Kinder Relief specializes in the medical evacuation of critically-ill and injured children from Gaza for life-saving medical treatment. In partnership with senior medical professionals in Gaza and our global medical advisors, we identify the most urgent pediatric cases that need medical evacuation. Our team then secures world-class, fully-funded treatment options for each child in countries including the United States, Italy, Jordan, Turkey and Egypt. We manage the entire evacuation process for each child from their location in Gaza to the hospital in the destination country and can secure all needed governmental permissions for a medevac. Following evacuation we continue to support the evacuated children and families, and ensure their accommodation and essential living expenses are provided.
Lady Zainab Foundation - At the forefront of technological advancements in prosthetics for complex blast injuries and congenital deformations, a cost of war due to the use of white phosphorus. We are also widening our scope to cover nerve and brain injuries, to ensure we do not leave victims behind. We are committed to follow up, long term prosthesis and orthotics and rehabilitation. We work with world leading institutions such as the Centre for Paediatric Blast Injury at Imperial College and the Centre for Pain Research after Traumatic Injury at the University of Bath to help develop medical infrastructure in prosthetics and orthotics in the areas in which we work.
Healing for Gaza - Healing for Gaza is an emergency mental health intervention for Palestinian children, adults and frontliners affected by the ongoing violence in Gaza. Led by trauma psychologist and UN advisor Dr. Alexandra Chen (A.B., A.M., Ed.M., Ph.D., Harvard University). Advised by Dr. Ghassan Abu Sitta, Azzam Fakhreddin, Melek El-Nimer, and the founder of HEAL Palestine, Steve Sosebee. The project will mobilise a specialised clinical team of Arabic and non-Arabic-speaking psychotherapists, psychologists, and psychiatrists rigorously trained in addressing war trauma to providing psychological, mental and emotional healing and strength for war-affected children and adult medical and humanitarian frontliners in Gaza.
The Ghassan Abu Sittah Children’s Fund - This Fund is dedicated under the expert guidance of Dr. Ghassan Abu Sittah to the transportation of critically injured children with their caretakers from Palestine to Lebanon, where they can receive the best possible medical, psychological, and social care, before returning home to Palestine where they will continue their recovery. By treating the children in Lebanon, we not only offer them exceptional care and access to top medical advances, but also help to relieve the medical sector in Gaza & The Occupied Territories.
