“Steal blood donations from hospitals and blood banks” = my personal favorite. They assume the process for this is simpler than dealing with eating people, clearly the most ethical.

“Stealing blood bags is more unethical than eating people” = surprisingly common take. Perhaps they hold the belief some people deserve life saving care over others. If stealing blood people donate anonymously that would keep both you and potential victims alive, then how is it unethical? Most likely, they read this take online and never really thought about it too hard just agreed because everyone else did. Very telling.

it just strikes me as so odd when people say "indigenous philosophy says this about such and such" where such and such is something about ethics, epistemology, metaphysics whatever. to my mind it is as ridiculous as talking about "what european philosophy says" or "what asian philosophy says"

The idea to group cultures under an essentially political concept like "indigenous" is always one step away from stuff like this, though. Indigeneity makes sense as a question of power relations. The idea of a pan-indigenous culture does not make any sense. Like in linguistic anthropology it makes sense to talk about "indigenous languages" as a group because they all face similar pressures that threaten their survival. But then if you turn around and talk about "indigenous languages" when doing comparative linguistics, that is self-evidently nonsensical.

So I can see coming up with a category of "indigenous philosophy" based on the relationship these philosophical traditions have to whatever dominant philosophical tradition. But now you have this category which is esentially useless for talking about what this philosophy says, and people can't help themselves.

this is a good description of why the phrase "indigenous philosophy" doesn't make sense as analyzed from its component parts, but I feel like if we actually look at how the term is used, typically what it seems to mean is "Braiding Sweetgrass by Robin Wall Kimmerer" which is then assumed by the person who uses the term to be representative of the beliefs of all people who are taken to be "indigenous"

We do not see parents who learn of a magical war their child has been conscripted into and rallies the adults of the community who should protect children from becoming child soldiers. At best, upon learning of the forces of darkness, parents typically become hostages for contrivance.

We are confronted by a story about the exceptional individual using their exceptional ability to destroy irredeemable forces of evil that would impose themselves upon the world, who are both overwhelmingly powerful and ultimately helpless against the will to power of our heroine.

There's a word for this sort of narrative.
