The prefix is given for appearance of the kit at birth, based on the majority colour of the coat. In some instances, the prefix may be altered to match a change in appearance, as could happen in a cat with fevercoat, vitiligo, or colourpoints. The prefix may also be given to correlate with circumstances around the kit’s birth, as long as it still matches its primary colour.
A cat who has survived a severe injury may be given a new name to reflect the appearance of that injury; these name changes are always optional and the choice of the cat receiving them. Furthermore, if the cat is not yet a warrior, the change will not be made until they receive their warrior name, although they may be alerted of the option sooner than that.

Bonus facts:
The suffixes -breeze, -shade, -stream, -cloud, and -storm and are derived from extremely early ideas of important skills or personality traits held by the founders. There is modern debate about whether -storm or -cloud is the ThunderClan-based suffix; they used to be a much more pacifist group, but in more modern history they have become much more enthusiastic about fighting.
The suffixes -ear, -eye, and -jaw are only seen in name changes, but others often seen include in these scenarios include -face, -foot, -pelt, -tail, and -throat.
Many thanks to @warriorsredux, @sparrowminder, @silvally, and @ailuronymy for their help in creating this naming system, for inspiring my ideas or for allowing me to use their own.
Just a couple of responses to replies on the Revered Animals post! Screenshots and responses below the cut.
@proteusolm Indeed it is! This is simply ThunderClan’s mythos. If they saw a kittypet doing it they would probably just think the behaviour spread from themselves. Glad you enjoyed the post!
@prettypeepers One-eye’s name before her signature injury was Lightclaw!
If Darkstripe is going to be Graystripe's mentor in this AU, does that mean they are no longer related? I vaguely remember family not being allowed to mentor their younger relatives in canon.
Darkstripe isn’t going to be Greystripe’s mentor now -- I’ve changed a lot of things since I last talked about who the crew’s mentors will be. I’m trying to strike a balance between characters who will be significant and characters who I want to give more screen time to, so for now, disregard what I’ve said about mentors in the past.
Each clan has an animal they revere over all others. These animals are seen as envoys of the demigods, created as proxies through which wisdom and gifts could be granted to the clans.
In ThunderClan, this animal is the deer. Despite the massive size of these animals, they are capable of moving very quietly through the woods, and the clan cats learned from their stealth and their constant awareness of their surroundings. ThunderClan was also the first clan to begin marking their territory with their claws, after watching stags use their antlers to strip the bark off trees. Deer have given this clan a physical gift as well, in the form of narrow trails useful for young cats first exploring the territory as well as for quiet scouting.
ShadowClan's animal is the raven. Ravens are seen as the originators of spoken language, and even now will speak with modern clan cats. In exchange for the cats' respect, ravens guide ShadowClanners to recently-fallen large prey (including deer), and occasionally trade smaller prey for trinkets; this is particularly useful to the clan in winter, when its already prey-poor territory becomes nearly barren. Due to the raven's diurnal nature, ShadowClan ironically sends out more daytime patrols than any other clan, in order to keep up relations and occasionally carry out cooperative hunting with the birds.
The hare is revered by WindClan, and even at a glance, it is easy to see why: after all, speed is the most important skill to a WindClan cat, and hares are stunningly fast animals. Cats within the clan also know that the hare taught their ancestors to tunnel and led them to befriend other burrowing animals. Hares also taught clan cats how to use their natural patterns to hide in plain sight and to be extremely aware of their surroundings while out in the open. WindClan cats also use their paws more in nonverbal communication than those in other clans, including thumping the ground in much the same manner as the animals they respect.
RiverClan esteems the heron, and credits this bird with teaching their ancestors how to fish, not only in instructing them on honing their accuracy and reflexes, but on patience and stillness as well. Fishing often requires long stints of standing completely motionless, waiting for the right moment to strike -- too early or too late, and you've frightened off everything around you. This combination of speed, force, and knowing precisely when to strike translates well into battle, and makes a RiverClan cat a dangerous opponent. The heron has also taught these cats to move slowly and carefully, both in hunting and in conversation, which has led to RiverClan's reputation as lazy and foolish.
I didn't mean to be harsh, i have autism and i say things really bluntly. I just always seem to miss things in plain sight and i was wondering if i missed the story. I'm also dealing with alot of the same things as you, but you obviously have it much worse and i'm sorry.
It’s no problem, you weren’t harsh. A lot of what I said in response to your ask has been on my mind for quite some time, and I apologise if you felt like I was angry at you. Mostly I’m frustrated with myself because I haven’t been able to work on this project as much as I would like. There’s just a lot on my plate right now.
No. I’m working on it, but no, it is not written yet.
Here’s the thing: I’m working part-time and going to school part (close to full)-time. I am also coping with dysphoria and multiple mental health difficulties, finally learning how to work with ADHD, and currently trying to push towards top surgery. On top of that, I’m trying to have something reminiscent of a social life.
I also function in a way that I need to plan things out in detail; I can’t just sit down and start writing. Any sort of “progress report” would be misleading, because my work stream is by no means a one-way flow. I’m trying to work on content to put up in the meantime, and I have multiple things in progress. I’m not sure what people are interested in seeing, though, so I’m reluctant to properly write anything up and post it.
How about this: I have a few things in the works. I’ll make a post in a moment asking what people would like to see of those things, and people can respond in the notes (very preferred) or by sending asks. Whatever people are most interested in will be my next big post.
Probably Rainflower. The way she talks about and treats her son is disgusting. If I’d read Crookedstar’s Promise more recently I’d be able to give examples, but it’s been years.
12: Character you’d like to see “morally” flipped (made “bad”or made “good”)?
I’d enjoy seeing most villains written as “good” guys, I think! Antagonists who truly believe they are doing the right thing are really interesting to me, and I really think most of them in Warriors could be turned into that relatively easily.
18: If traditional: What non-traditional suffix would youinclude in your system? If non-traditional: What’s your favourite canonsuffix?
I am not sure which angle to answer this from because I’m using a mostly-traditional system with some additions. But most of the suffixes I’ve added are some of my favourites from canon, so I’ll say: -berry, -belly, -shade, and -frost are some of my favourite non-traditional suffixes.
Just letting you all know that I am indeed still alive. Between school and work I'm past full-time, but I promise I'm still working on things here! The naming system will be getting an update soon, and I'm working on another short story.
Support creators you love. Buy a Coffee for sheena with Ko-fi.com
Hi, everyone! I set up a ko-fi here – mostly this is for supporting my artwork, but I figured it wouldn’t be a poor idea to share it here, as well. I added a link on the blog with the options as well, but I’ll list them here, too!
One coffee ($3) will get you a brief blurb on a topic of your choice, relating to the redeux or warriors in general (opinions, what I would do with certain situations, etc).
Two coffees ($6) will get you a chibi like this! It can be of your own OC or a warriors character!
Hello! Thank you so much for the kind words, and thank you for reading! I'm delighted to hear you enjoy the blog. 1, 3, 9, 13, 24, 27, and 28, please! -- Grey from Ailuronymy.
You’ve been an enormous inspiration to me over the years, in more ways than one.
1: Favourite canon warrior name?
Regardless of what I say I’ll think of something I like better tomorrow, but... let’s go with Littlecloud. His name is definitely up there.
3: Warrior you’d most like to rename?
I’m torn between the very obvious Twigbranch, and Sparkpelt. I really dislike Twigbranch’s whole name, but the fact that Sparkpelt was basically named after Firestar because she looks like him leaves a bad taste in my mouth, and then she didn’t even get a suffix befitting her personality or abilities.
9: Favourite canon scene or dialogue of all time?
Of all time is difficult. In more recent books, I really enjoyed Alderheart’s interactions with Puddleshine and Shadowkit.
13: Favourite AU concept?
I absolutely adore AUs where Fireheart has a sibling relationship with Scourge. Naturally, I’m also very fond of AUs with significant LGBTQ characters and ones where characters with disabilities get to do what they want with their lives.
24: What would you ask Erin Hunter, if you could?
Have you considered adding someone to your team to keep track of all of your characters and plotlines?
27: If you were on Drunk Warriors Rants, what would you talk about?
Probably mostly ableism and the fact that nobody knows how to talk to each other in these dang books. Also, Tigerheart’s Shadow, one of the most infuriating books I’ve ever read.
28: What would your warrior name be?
Definitely Spider-something; in the system I use here, -path and -throat are both viable options on top of the strictly traditional possibility of -nose. One of my favourite names I’ve been given by someone else is Tinythroat, though.
As part of Ailuronymy’s anniversary month, I’ve put together a list of prompts for writers to use as inspiration for creating short Warriors fiction–whether for your original characters or canon, whatever you like to write! Tag your writing with #ailuronymy or #ailuronymy writing challenge and say which prompt you were inspired by to see it featured on this blog.
As part of Ailuronymy’s anniversary month, I have put together a little ask meme about the series, an ask for every day of the month. Feel free to post an answer to the #ailuronymy tag every day or reblog the post and encourage your followers to ask you questions themselves! Have fun!

Hey folks! One of my all-time favourite blogs, Ailuronymy, is having its seven-year (!!!) anniversary this month. Check them out if you haven’t; Grey is absolutely brilliant, and if you like what I’m doing here, I’m sure you’ll like Ailuronymy too.
are you gonna release the allegiances any time soon?
I sure hope so. They're still very much in flux, and I really don't want to post them until I'm solid on both them and the family trees. And I'll probably be much more confident with those once I have things planned in more detail. It's been a really busy couple of months for me. The job I'm about to start should give me more downtime, though, so hopefully I'll be able to really get the ball rolling! If you would like to see where the allegiances and some of the trees are right now, they're up in the discord.
I’m sorry but I just don’t see redtail as trans or gay
Okay, cool. Sounds like this isn’t the AU for you, maybe. Or maybe you can stick around and confront why you think trans and/or gay people have to be a certain way for you to accept them as such.
I’m not sure why you felt the need to tell me this. I’m not going to toss my headcanons because someone disagrees, especially when I do have the support of a ton of people and I’m happy with what I’m doing.
