       Oh. Luke took a step back, giving the newcomer space. They looked like a child – or at least a young teenager – but Luke knew better than to assume. It had been easier on Tatooine, interacting mostly with humans or other native species, but once he’d left his home planet, he’d realized that there were plenty of humanoids in the galaxy that didn’t age at the same rate that he did. Having learnt that, he’d made an effort not to speak down to anybody he met, in an attempt to avoid giving offense ( and starting fights he couldn’t handle ).

       The word hit his mind before his ears, and he was caught in a loop for a minute as his body attempted to cope, still unused to this sort of nonverbal communication. Even when Obi-Wan spoke to him without manifesting, he registered it as an external voice. Reading thoughts, too, required actively reaching out and preparing himself. This was different. As soon as he’d managed to regain his focus, though, he knelt and grasped his knees, trying a smile. “Where did you come from?”

* their age had become.... vague, after awhile. chara still talked about the force in terms of coding and variables, as if they thought of the connection through everything like programming in a computer. and... that was how frisk had come to think of it, after time. they’d spent much more time with chara than they had with the jedi. they... considered themselves to be about twelve. they knew they had to technically be much older - seeing the occasional news report and being surprised at how time had passed, but it didn’t bother them. they liked being a child, still.

* their hands tap slightly against their sides, still trying to evaluate the other. for some reason, he felt.... familiar. like some kind of echo. they wrote it off, albeit uneasily, as unimportant.
