Lessons on Ice
For the last 18 months to a year the UK has been fortunate enough to not have been that cold, the upshot of that is that I’ve been able to cycle in relatively warm temperatures right up until the middle of December, as such I haven't really invested in any super warm kit.
When I headed out for a little spin on Saturday morning, I was well wrapped up, couple of good base layers, thermal bib and merino hat. The one thing I’m missing is gloves. - Don’t get me wrong my Rapha Merino Gloves are great, but when the mercury has dropped below 0, I really need something warmer and windproof. All of this meant that 9km into my route I had to turn round. Whilst the main roads weren't frozen the back roads (of where there are a lot of round my way) were covered in ice. By the time I got home my hands were in agony. Like proper agony, it took cuddling a hot water bootle to bring them back to life.
Reece and the Cold don’t mix well. - but I still had some miles in my legs that wanted out.
Later that day I decided to give Swift another go. By doing their shorter FTP test. - It was hard work but I felt like I’d done something good and self improving on the bike, something that I hadn’t done for a while. I think I’m officially a Zwift convert - even if it did crash and not upload my workout to Strava!!
The lesson learnt? - Don’t attempt outside until its above 5 Celsius until you've got better gloves!
