Aragorn held her gaze for a long moment, and though silence followed her words, it did not stand between them. There was tenderness in his eyes, yet it was not fragile, and the gravity of him did not lessen as he came nearer. If anything, it made the softness there feel more certain, for Aragorn was not a man who gave his heart lightly, and less still a man who spoke of it without weight.

His hand found hers with quiet purpose, his fingers closing around her own as though the gesture itself held more truth than any abundance of speech could offer. For a time he only looked upon her, the sternness of exile and long duty eased by the presence of the one person before whom he need not pretend that longing had never touched him.

He did not speak as one seeking comfort, nor as one overcome by sentiment, but with the plain solemnity of a vow already lived rather than newly made. His thumb moved once across her hand, slow and restrained, and the warmth in his face remained quiet, reserved for her alone. ❝I have little to offer that is free of shadow,❞ he continued, ❝and yet what is mine to give has long been yours. Whatever road lies before me, whatever burden I must bear, that shall not change.❞

His eyes remained on hers, steady as ever, though softer now in a way few would have known how to name.
