Rotting in bed is my favorite hobby
my pookies.
Sirius: he just sits there Remus, he never leaves, he hardly sleeps
Remus: I know
Sirius: I don’t know what to do, I’m worried about him
Remus: I know
Sirius: I just don’t get it, it’s like he’s waiting for something
Remus: I think he’s waiting for Reggie, sweetheart
Sirius: he’s gone Remus, he’s gone and he isn’t coming back, James is waiting for a ghost
Remus: I know, but I think he feels Regulus waiting for him too
The days leading up to the full moon, everyone has a way of comforting Remus. James quietly leaves chocolate on his bedside. Lily brings his tea to the library so he doesn’t need to get up. Sirius massages his achy muscles and lets him be the little spoon. But when he’s truly miserable? Peter just nods knowingly, and offers him a blunt like the real one he is.
pandora is like a human lalaloopsy doll
lily is such a savoury girl i just know she would fuck up the filthiest martini and a big salty charcuterie board
Sunburnt Sirius as a tourist in a coastal Southern Welsh town, dragged there by the Potters, who adore the Mumbles and Swansea summers.
Remus who works in his mum’s cafe right by the pier, where Sirius decides upon their first day that this is where they will have breakfast every day for the rest of the summer.
i absolutely adore this ask honestly
the first morning the potters drag sirius out for a proper welsh breakfast, sirius is already pink from the ten-minute walk from their rental cottage
he spots remus behind the counter (sleeves rolled up, faint scars peeking from his forearms, soft curls tied back with a bandana) and instantly declares this cafe their new daily ritual. “breakfast here every single day, prongs. no arguments”. james just smirks because he sees exactly why
the first thing remus notices about sirius is his sunburn. the poor dude winces every time he shifts, and there are freckles standing out sharply on his pink nose
without a word remus disappears into the back and returns with a bottle of aloe vera his mum keeps for emergency. he goes like, “on the house. you look like you might need it”. and when i say he’s fucking sexy i MEAN it. he says in that low, slightly raspy voice, and sirius is gone for him right then
sirius starts showing up earlier each day just to watch remus work, wiping tables, carrying trays, chatting quietly with the old regulars. he orders the biggest breakfast possible and lingers over coffee, pretending to read the book while actually stealing glances. remus pretends not to pay attention at the way sirius lingers but always slides an extra pain au chocolat onto his plate with a sweet tiny eye-roll
by day three sirius is properly burnt, shoulders glowing, nose peeling, complaining while secretly loving the excuse to come back. remus starts keeping a spare tube of aftersun in the fridge behind the counter
he pulls sirius into the shaded back courtyard during his break one morning, sits him on an upturned crate, and gently rubs the cooling gel over his shoulders and face. sirius goes very quiet, heart hammering, mumbling “you don’t have to”, and remus just murmurs, “i want to”
their routine solidifies fast: sirius arrives windblown and increasingly tanned (still burning in patches because he refuses sunscreen like an idiot), orders the same thing, and remus makes time to sit with him for ten minutes between rushes
they talk about sirius’ london life, remus’ quiet coastal one, books, music, how sirius never learned to swim properly. remus teases him gently about his “posh” accent and sirius just smiles like a schoolgirl in response
one overcast afternoon when the cafe is quiet, remus drags sirius down to the pebble beach below the pier. he shows him how to swim, then makes sure he applies sunscreen properly this time, fingers lingering on sirius’ lower back a little longer than necessary
sirius turns around, sunburnt and brave, and kisses him right there with the sound of waves and gulls around them. remus tastes like salt air and sparkling rose lemonade
sirius becomes lowkey obsessed with bringing remus little gifts each morning. a smooth stone from the beach, a wildflower he picked on the cliff walk, chocolate from the fancy shop in swansea. remus keeps every single one behind the counter in a small jar. his mum notices and just smiles knowingly
he also starts bringing lunches for remus on busy days, slipping in cheesy notes that make remus grin like a fool. “staying in the shade like you said, pretty boy” or “burning again, but not from the sun”. remus pins them inside his wallet
late one evening after the cafe closes, remus takes sirius walking along the prom in the soft dusk light. sirius is finally a warm golden-brown instead of angry red, hair messy from sea wind
they stop at the end of the pier, sirius leaning on the railing, remus pressing up behind him with arms around his waist. sirius turns in his arms and they kiss slow and sweet, tasting like the ice cream they shared earlier
the potters adore watching it happen. euphemia keeps “accidentally” booking longer stays and telling sirius he needs more vitamin sea. james just sends sirius cheeky texts when he disappears to the cafe for the third time in a day
by the end of the summer sirius is tanned, relaxed, and completely in love. he’s already planning return visits, talking about “maybe getting a little place here next year”. remus, who never lets himself hope for tourists, finds himself believing in this one
their last breakfast is quiet and a little sad until remus slides a key to the flat above the cafe across the table (yes it’s reckless, yes they barely know each other, but what can a heart do). “not just for the summer”, he says softly. sirius kisses him over the table, burnt nose and all
it’s all golden light, sea air, peeling sunburns turning into memories, and two boys finding home in the most unexpected place
need sirius black thinking he’s homophobic bc he saw remus flirting with a guy and was filled with rage
so i just giggled
every july remus and sirius disappear for a week to that rickety old cabin by the lake with no real plans except to be useless and in love. they eat berries straight off the bushes, juice staining their fingers and mouths, sirius always popping the ripest ones between remus’ lips. they cannonball into the water until their skin is pruned and their lungs burn, swimming for hours, splashing and dunking each other before drifting close, all wet hair and slick skin. when they’re all dripping and sun-drunk, sirius climbs on top of remus right there on the wooden planks, and they kiss for hours, tasting like berries and lake water and summer heat. remus keeps whispering “you get sunburned so easily” against sirius’ mouth but neither of them moves to put on more sunscreen for at least another hour. later they lie on threadbare towels sunbathing, remus with his book forgotten on his chest as sirius traces lazy patterns over his scars. at night they catch fireflies, laughing and mocking the way their soda cans crack open, then lie tangled in sleeping bags outside the tent, sticky with sweat and lake water, trading sticky-sweet kisses under a sky full of stars
Voicemail (chocokitten on ao3)
Regulus has memorised the voicemail word for word after the first week.
It was two minutes and twenty two seconds.
By the second week, he knew every breath between words, every soft crackle of static, every soft laugh caught at the back of his throat.
By the third week, he could match his own breathing to James’s
He still presses play anyway.
The voicemail sits at the top of his inbox, saved and starred. He had pinned it to the top.
4 : 12 AM glows red across his alarm clock when Regulus listens to it again.
“Hey, Reggie,”
James sounds warm, alive. He was distracted by something, like he always was. There’s faint noises in the background, car horns, people talking, wind.
“I know you’re asleep, even though it’s only ten o’clock, because you are objectively the oldest twenty one year old alive,”
Regulus closes his eyes. Taking in James’s voice. He pictures James face, his puppy eyes, his bright smile.
“I just wanted to say sorry again for earlier. Sirius said I was being an absolute prick, which was a bit harsh, but apparently i’m not supposed to joke about you joining a cult when you are already stressed.”
A broken laugh escapes Regulus before he can stop it.
He thinks backs to their last conversation, Regulus was stressed about college work and James had been anything but helpful, he made a joke about him joining and cult and Regulus blew up on him.
Their last conversation was an argument.
Regulus’s last words to James were, “Get out. I never want to see your face again.”
Then James left. He went on a walk to give Regulus some space.
A truck driver missed a red light.
Regulus squeezes his eyes as much as he could as he tried to focus on James’s voice and not the overwhelming guilt in his stomach.
“Anyways,” James continued softly. “I know you don’t want to speak to me right now.”
Regulus broke, all he wants to do is speak to James. The bed dipped from him curling into himself.
“And I know you think you have to deal with everything yourself, all the time, but you don’t.”
His throat burns. His eyes are blurry. His lips tremble.
Static cracks loudly through the speaker. Then James sighs. “You’re probably going to roll your eyes at what I’m about to say,”
Regulus feels like he can’t breathe.
“I love you. I’m IN love with you. Disgustingly.”
Tears slip down Regulus’s cheeks.
“I love you even when you’re being scary and mean and acting like you hate me.” James laughed again, softly this time.
“And I know you can’t say it back, but that’s okay. We can work on it together.”
Regulus remembers exactly where he was when Sirius called him. Kitchen floor. Cold tiles. Halfway through making tea he didn’t even want.
He remembers thinking, “Maybe I should talk to James today.”
He remembers dropping the mug. He remembers the blood rushing through his head while Sirius’s voice played in his ears, “There was an accident, Reg. James didn’t make it.”
The voicemail keeps playing.
“I’ll see you tomorrow.” James says softly, affectionately.
That sentence nearly kills him every time. Tomorrow never came. James was paused in time.
“Goodnight baby. Dream about me.” James says cheekily before the line cuts off.
A beep. Silence etched in the room.
Regulus stared at the dark ceiling, while his phone screen dimmed in his hand.
He closes his eyes and pretends James is driving home. That he’s still out there, somewhere. That tomorrow still exists in the shape they planned for it.
A shared flat with red wallpaper. A dog James wanted and Regulus absolutely did not. Matching mugs. Arguments over whose turn it was to get the weekly shopping.
Everything was in future tense.
His thumb hovers over the “Replay” button.
He knows this is unhealthy. Sirius told him gently, voice cracking due to his own grief. Remus told him grief could become a place you trap yourself inside. Even Lily, eyes swollen red at the funeral, hugged Regulus and whispered in his ear, “You need to keep living too.”
But the voicemail is proof, proof James existed. Proof Regulus didn’t make up their connection in his head.
The room is unbearably quiet. Regulus presses play again.
“Hey, Reggie,”
