A New Witch’s Dictionary 📖
Disclaimer: This is all based on my opinion. It is not perfectly alphabetized. Altar • A place for all of your witch supplies, tools, a place to meditate and worship your deities. It is the center of your practice. Astrology • You’ve probably heard of astrology, in witchcraft it is used as a form of divination. Astral projection • Astral projection is a purposeful out-of-body experience where you, well, project a version of your consciousness (also known as an astral body) to a location that is separate from your physical body. Athame • A ritualistic dagger used as a tool in witchcraft. Aura • An energetic field that surrounds a living creature, usually people are referring to humans when this term is used. Baby witch • A witch who is new to the world of witching and the community. Beltane • A sabbat that celebrates fertility and the coming of summer. Closed culture/religion • A closed culture, or religion is something that is closed off to people outside of it and does not condone taking (appropriating) anything from it. Color magick • A type of magick based around color, the idea is you use certain colors that you associate with certain things to make a spell more powerful. Ex: Using pink in a love spell. Correspondence • A connection or association with something, you could use the example I stated above. If pink corresponds with love, you use it in a love spell. Yule • One of the sabbats, this one is based on celebrating winter but also the coming of spring. This is also when the dark half of the year ends and the light half begins. Let me know if you have any corrections or additions and I might add them. I hope this helps someone. Enjoy! Have a lovely day 💖
chthonic worship tip
In my experience, chthonic (underworld) gods really appreciate hearing “thank you.” (This includes Hades and Persephone as well as Hecate, Hermes in his psychopomp aspect, Hypnos, Thanatos, Morpheus, and others.) They all do incredibly dirty, difficult, and vitally important jobs and rarely get recognition for it.
Things you can thank them for:
Sheltering, protecting, and taking care of the dead
Treating everyone fairly, meting out divine justice to people who escaped it in life
Allowing us to extract precious metals and material resources from the earth (I usually pair this with a commitment to do what I can to be a responsible steward of the earth, and follow the principle of xenia rather than hoarding wealth)
Maintaining the boundaries between this world and the next, and allowing people to pass through when appropriate
Making new growth possible by clearing away that which is no longer useful (this can be both literal and metaphorical)
Guiding and looking after people who are going through grief, depression, or “dark nights of the soul,” enabling personal rebirth and transformation
Protecting and nourishing the roots of plants, making all plant life and agriculture possible
Things that come from or are sheltered in their world include: sleep, dreams, precious metals, plant life, reincarnated or newly incarnated souls, magic, purpose and destiny — and according to interpretation, vaccination, EMDR, anesthesia, X-rays and MRIs, mass social movements, psychology, shadow work**
Also, please do something nice for Charon. I’ve long thought of him as the patron of customer service workers who are frequently yelled at.
*sources: Greek Religion by Walter Burkert, Ancient Greek Cults by Jennifer Larson, The Greek Way of Death by Robert Garland – these three books are my go-to’s for info about the roles the chthonic gods and the underworld played in ancient Greek religion and culture. Add to this the underworld as metaphor in Jungian psychology and archetypes (I’m less well read in this area, but see also The Hero with a Thousand Faces by Joseph Campbell)
**I once read a great series of essays on the rivers of the Underworld (which I can not find right now) that posited the principle of vaccination comes from the Styx. According to myth, Achilles was dipped in the river as a baby and this protected his body from injury — just as exposure to a dead pathogen grants our bodies protection from a live version of that same pathogen. Along these lines, things like anesthesia and EMDR would come from the Lethe and/or the Acheron, psychology and self-reflection from the Mnemosyne, and so on. And modern astrology understands Pluto (Hades) as a god of invisible forms of power, which makes him also the ruler of things like X-rays and MRIs, nuclear energy, mass movements, and lots of other things…

Help Me Escape from my Toxic Home Environment
Please don’t scroll past this and read.
I have made this post before but not too many people seen it I’m hoping you could this see one. I’ll post this to the point it’ll probably be all you see.
I’m 22 years old and I’m in a very difficult situation and it’s really hard to stay strong especially it’s been happening for many years. There’s three people in a trailer. Let’s just say this guy is a family friend or bf. Cause idk how to explain this relationship he has with my mom. So there’s me, my mom and the friend.
They both really make my life miserable especially my mom. I live in a small town. No public transportation near. And I can’t drive or have a job currently cause my mom has made me so codependent. I can’t do anything. Her anger issues and confusing changing moods is really hitting me hard. I’m not sure what to do. I feel like there’s no way for me to get out. I’ve been stuck for years and I’m tired of it. My family isn’t really a big help either. They just keep taking her side and even though they know about the whole situation they won’t help me. and I’m sick of it. I have one best friend in my town. And she still lives with her mom. I can’t live with them besides there’s no room anyways. All my other friends are in different states and countries. I honestly hate my state so I rather live in a different state as well. For those who are reading, can you please help by sharing and donating to me? ( My GoFundMe is in a different name for privacy & safety reasons )

Omfg i just realized this i think my pull towards physically starting my wicca and witchcraft journey was how charged everything is right now 😳😳 tomorrow is the conjunction AND yule AND the shift of the sun from sag to cap... and i felt so charged today that i started my grimoire.
Grimoire ideas
About you:
How you got started in the craft
Your spiritual journey
Things you connect to (animals, elements, plants, ect)
Types of magic you do
Your natal chart
Your deities (if you have any)
Correspondences:
Remember, you don't need to write down correspondences you will never need! So instead, write about...
Crystals you have/want
Plants you can grow yourself/already have around you. Check your spice cabinet
And list things to use those for! So that would be herb bundles to burn, salves, recipes, and so on.
Other things you can use in magic that you already have
This would be things like sea shells, snail shells, grass, dirt, candles. Get creative!
Other witchcraft stuff:
Your sigils
Planets
The sun/moon +moon phases
Zodiac signs
The elements
Symbolism (animals, shapes, and whatever else you wish to add)
Spells:
What makes a spell that works!!! This should help with making your own spells
What NOT to do
Different types of spells
Spells you will actually use
Divination:
A section on tarot cards and their meanings
How to use a pendulum
Meanings of oracle cards
Rune meanings and how to cast them
Lesser known forms of divination!!!
Mental health:
Grounding and centering
Burn out care and being energy efficient
A list of what motivates you to do your craft
Small spells for self care
Astral work:
Your astral space (a map, a description, drawings of important locations)
Your astral body, if it's any different than your physical one
A list of spirits and important information about them
Protection, sheilding, banishing, and safety
Manners when interacting with spirits and what NOT to do
Methods of projection/travel that work for you
Post-astral grounding methods
General spirit work:
How to interact with spirits and how NOT to interact with spirits
Protection, banishing, shielding, and other safety things
How to give offerings (there's more than one way!)
Methods of communicating with spirits
Signs of spirits
Ways spirits can send signs and messages (animals, dreams, and so on)
A list of different kinds of spirits you work with/have encountered
A section for research, especially if you're doing deity work.
Grounding, if it helps you afterwards
A log of interaction with spirits. This can be like a divination journal but with spirits, if that's what you do.
Tips on Grimoire Organization
Please note that if you are using a hard bound notebook or journal, adding in additional pages will bulk up your book, like so: (these are the exact same journals, btw)
- Envelopes. Let’s say you’re doing a section on Tarot in your Grimoire, and you want to include a few Tarot spreads, but you don’t want to waste two or three pages. Glue an envelope onto one of your pages to make a “pocket” where you can store little cards or papers with the tarot spreads written on them.
- Pockets. Similar to the envelope idea. If you have a page, or section for example, on herbal teas, you can make a pocket out of a piece of paper to keep your current favorite tea recipes in.
- Dividers, Cover Pages and Ribbons. If you’re like me and you like to have “sections” in your grimoire, you can easily make dividers by gluing a sheet of paper in your book (to make it heavier to make the sections stand out more). You can go further by turning your divider into a cover page for that section. And if you don’t like the idea doing that, you can always glue a ribbon, or a string, to the spine of your book to act as a bookmark.
- Double pages. I always had a problem with “wasting” pages in my grimoire. For example, my page on consecrating and charging. These two concepts are very similar to me, and I didn’t want two page stating the same thing. So, what I did was write out all my information on charging on a separate sheet of paper, then glued the top of that page into my grimoire. This way I could flip up the page on charging (as if it were on a clipboard) and have my page on consecrating underneath.
- Extended pages. Similar to the one above. In my Crystal section of my Grimoire, I decided to write out a chart that let me search for crystals by intention. So I drew my chart on a long sheet of paper, then folded it over (side to side) so that it fit comfortably in my book, then I just glued one side down into the book.
- Brochures. In my Elements section, I had a ton of information I wanted to write down, but I didn’t want each element to have more than two pages. So I used a piece of computer paper and folded it into a brochure (or into thirds) and glued it into the book so that the flaps would open and give me double the space to write.
- Clear Tape. There are many times where i finished a page in my grimoire only to find out there was a section that I left out. A simply way to fix this was with clear tape. I would write my forgotten bit of into on a separate piece of paper and then use clear tape to tape one side of the paper to my page. This allows me to flip the paper back and forth without covering up anything that I had written.

Some beginner witchcraft posts I’ve curated for a friend:

Other important posts:
grounding info
some basic witchcraft terms
spell types
resources for writing your own spells
witchy things to do in quarantine
big list of tarot/oracle spreads
release spell (a good spell for beginners to try)
Misc notes about things i think are relevant:
Starting a journal where you keep track of your witchy info is always good to do, whether its a physical journal or one online. I (in my personal opinion) think this is some good info on the basics of witchcraft to keep written down or saved. Also a dream journal.
Journals should also be used for writing down all your spells/experiments. Write down what you did, how you did it, when you did it (day of the week, phase of the moon, time of day, etc), and why you did it (what was the reason for casting the spell). And then later write down the results of the spell. If it worked, you now have an exact method for recreating that spell. If it didn’t work, you know exactly what you did, so it’s easier to figure out where you went wrong and try again.
Correspondence lists already curated are a good place to start, but as you advance and get a feel for the spell components that you work with, your correspondence list should become more personalized, and the ingredients that you use will likely narrow down. This is why it is recommended that you create your own spells, since everyone has assigned their own meaning to the herbs/crystals/etc used in their spells. (However, this is different if you are following a specific tradition).
PS. Here is my book rec tag, to find books that teach these concepts more in depth + other important info on witchcraft)
BETTER SHIT TO PUT IN YOUR GRIMOIRES THAN THE BASIC SHIT EVERYONE SAYS:
Maps! Maps! MAPS! If you're a death witch, get one for the cemeteries you visit and mark gravestones/areas you've practiced in! Garden witches! Map out your gardens! Green witches! Map where you find specific herbs in your area! Lunar witches! Mark the best spots to go look at the sky! Make a key! Take notes!
Recipes for COMPONENTS! Write down how to make the mixtures you use in spells often- A special salt mixed with herbs and put under the moon, a mixture of oils for protection, the herb mixes sachets you keep making to add to sachets, whatever!
For green witches- press samples of stuff and glue them in! Go to an arboretum and ask for permission to take leaves to press, they'll usually let you take some- add them in with your notes about trees
Cool ways to make spells! I make spells in envelopes and on empty spools, what are some ways you do?
The local plants in your area and what they do. You're not going to be likely to find chrysanthemums to forage in Missouri, but you will find creeping charlie and prairie plants. What can you do with a thistle?
When you celebrate a sabbat, write down what you did and include samples! Ribbons from your Beltane altar, a pressed sample of your lemmas harvest, a scrap of your Yule decorations. Maybe do a spell and tape the remnants into your grimoire in a plastic baggie
Learn how to make an envelope out of paper just by folding it, how to string seeds, how to dry plants, how to macrame rocks and hang them from your window. Find those little witchy skills and write them down.
How to incorporate your hobby into your magic. Sigiling origami paper, weaving knot magick into your crochet, making blessed bookmarks, etc
Substitutes! Rosemary, rose and clear quartz are good for most things, but there are more substitutes to be used that are more powerful. Roanoke bells are good substitutes for bluebells, apparently.
Correspondences of odd things. Turns out different kinds of cats have different correspondences, huh.
Superstitions and such from where you're from.
For kitchen witches: easy to alter recipes. An egg noodle recipe that takes herbs really well, a simple bread recipe that can be dressed up for spells or rituals, how to make a good pie crust that you can sprinkle nutmeg in or whatever you desire.
Or: What foods go good with what herbs. You'll make a better apple pie (and get the benefits of apples, nutmeg, and cinnamon together!) If you know how your herbs taste together with your cooking. (Most kitchen witches know this stuff, but for a green witch who likes to make teas or a sea witch that likes to make soup, etc, this is important)
people always think of witchcraft as evil and satanic. my own mom thinks i have ill intent.
but my path is not existent because i want to harm and hurt. my path is not existent because i want to envy and ambush. my path is existent because i want to make the world a better place; i want to connect to the earth and the divine. i want to benefit my family, my friends and myself.
so to the people who think we are negative souls
wicca and witchcraft is meant to change peoples lives for the better. even hexing, jinxing, and cursing can be used as a defense. there are so many people who just want to straighten their vibes and live their lives happily and spiritually. please stop using the first article you see about people you don’t know. please stop assuming we sacrifice animals and steal bones. we do not.

Do share a bit of your path and your blog if you'd like!
I'll start! I'm Kalila, and I'm an islamic mysticist. I mainly work with spirits and I incorporate traditional Indonesian shamanism into my craft. Other than that, I enjoy spellwork the most. All my posts are informative ones regarding magic, mysticism, and witchcraft, all of which are properly tagged. My ask box and DMs are always open !
