My latest public art commission by @natmusaus in Canberra, this work is quite large and suspended from the NMA ceiling. I worked with @uapcompany to fabricate and install the Bogong Moth, made from polished cast bronze, aluminium, automotive paint and led lighwork. The artwork references the migratory Bogong Moth, an Indigenous totem, as a metaphor for the mass movements of cultures and people. I’m sad to see the T2 building lose the artwork that was so warmly embraced by the local community. This commission celebrating the traditional owners of the land on which T2 stands (the Gadigal people) in collaboration with @hobolonergan was intended by the council to be a short term installation of around 3 months before being returned to its original facade, but community demand extended its life from 2012 until now. Unfortunately the @cityofsydney are now selling the building as a commercial property, and the future use of the building is unknown. The potential for my artwork, as a celebration of Indigenous culture, to be possibly associated with something like a pokies club down the track, or to be used by the future owner in ways that are completely out of my control, was something that I am uncomfortable with and for this reason the building is being returned to its heritage facade prior to the sale, as the City of Sydney always intended to do. Thanks to everyone who has expressed their support for T2 over the years, and to those trolls who are brave enough to send me private messages calling me ‘weak’ and a ‘wanker’ for choosing to maintain the integrity of my own work, I politely say, go fuck yourself.
