            “ well, i DID get the help from that child that one time. ” sure, he guided them on their journey and what not, and in the end — they were a crucial party in saving hoenn. steven could never handle all matters alone.

“ and i am glad you hold your title with such dedication. it’s truly wonderful. i know i can count on you and the other leaders for assistance at any time. ” not to mention, half the time steven wouldn’t even be in hoenn. the man spent far too much time traveling for his own personal reasons, research, or business.

Perhaps she'd garnished her statements a bit too heavily. She refused to take back what was said, but the sudden frown betrays her sentiment. Just what was his job, anyway? He was lucky to have the rest of the league to hold up a mantle he rarely sat on! Roxanne takes a deep breath, hoping that smoke wasn't coming out of her ears. ...right, the child. They were not the first to pass earn a stone badge, and they certainly wouldn't be the last. She'd not expected so much from one person, let alone a scion of Rayquaza. If the stories were true, that is--she'd only gleamed bits and pieces. The region was safe thanks to their efforts, and so Roxanne wouldn't get hung up on details that didn't concern her. 

"You are lucky." she snorts proudly, but her body language hardly portrayed what she really felt more than that. "For that child, and for us. Just don't go thinking your luck won't run out eventually. We expect you to carry your own weight, too." it's a jest, and the "we" is actually a pointed reference to herself. But she couldn't be too angry without hypocrisy--if it weren't for her students and sense of duty, Roxanne would definitely, 100% have her face in the dirt spelunking somewhere. As often as possible. She was always a little envious of Steven in that regard. 

There’s a pause, and she gets caught up in her thoughts.

“Where is that child nowadays, anyway...?”

"And it shouldn't be. You do good by your role as a beacon of good will, but you're still just one man." she huffs a little, crossing her arms stubbornly. The notion that had earlier been implied still baffled her. As much as Roxanne admired Steven, no one deserved that sort of stress.

"I'm not sure that all recall this, but it is in our job description. I would give anything to ensure Rustboro's safety--and if I was able, to ensure the safety of her neighbors. But first and foremost my home is my responsibility."

“Was it so obvious?” her credentials must serve her well, “Your accent…are you from Sinnoh? Or perhaps one of the islands?” she was more familiar with names than faces when it came to other regions, and it’d be a lie to say she didn’t have a bias to rock, ground and fossil enthusiasts.

Roxanne holds her tongue, not particularly fond of his tone but more than willing to pick her battles. Tact was everything.

“I’m afraid my sentiments are just a tad more realistic, on a broad scale. It certainly doesn’t help that my region was nearly drowned and leveled by two men who thought they were doing good, only to let their madness put everyone at risk.” it also didn’t help that she’d seen that Pokemon first hand, experienced its might. And she’s still not sure she was on the lucky end of it.

“There was a hero, a very capable trainer who was in the right place at the right time to put a stop to it. But even by that point, much damage had been done. A moment later and it might havebeen too late.

We were lucky to  have that trainer, but statistically they’re not someone we can depend on showing up every hundred years. That they helped at all was just that: luck.”

Aversion is far from his forte, but when he’s successful (???), the sense of triumph isn’t present. Another exchanged glance with Makuhita and– yeah, no harm, no foul! But he can’t feel good about diverting when it’s Roxanne, can he? Brawly’s eyes dip, and then rise to double check his own points– yeah, he would have to tell her about the trouble in that particular sector sometime soon. Sure, Nosepass is resilient– and Brawly grins over at the Pokemon as if to commend Nosepass for it without explanation– but if what they’ve been discussing about de-evolution is going to be of concern, then maybe it’d be best to preserve their Pokemon’s energies… Of course, when it comes down to their Trainer’s safety, Brawly’s sure the Pokemon have their own thoughts and feelings on the matter. They’d just all have to try their hardest to keep alright.

He detects some of her excitement, and his eyebrows lift with the corners of his mouth, perked up by the change in atmosphere– she thinks it’s possible! Then, they could do it, make the best of their time there– “Oh, yeah, the train! You know, I still gotta find a way to train ON a train–” (He’s obnoxiously stoked about the Gym Gym nickname circulating their region.) “Maybe this one will be big enough to–” Huh? Oh. Brawly flips on his goggles, off and on, off and on, off– still no night vision. “Yeah, I guess waiting would be the way to go… HMMM. Well, hey, if it’s like any other place, then there’s gotta be school stuff happenin’ in the early hours, so– SO! So, we could just follow the crowd, come morning!” Brawly snaps his fingers, enthusiasm bright. “And if we dash out the doors with toast, we’re five times more likely to get there just in the nick of time! Uh, er– I think that’s what that Youngster said once…” But, for now! He looks to Roxanne again, habitual smile rising for the occasion. “Do you wanna see where I’m staying?!” Although… “Uh, but it IS close to lights out… Maybe you wanna go to… What’s it called? Gamma…?”

It's not a difficult decision. Roxanne was far too embarrassed of her living quarters to subject him to them. She didn't prefer being in them herself--to the extent that she'd opt to use public sanitation facilities and only really used the housing to sleep and store her things. She's not even sure she could realistically offer him somewhere to sleep without one of them being crammed into the wall while the other struggled to stay on the bed. She'd done her best to make do, to keep the place up, but you reached a point of exhaustion where it just didn't seem worth it anymore. And that was why, without thinking twice about it, she immediately suggested his place. They were beyond the point of it being rude or forward. Their friendship had bridge that gap a long time ago, so she was hardly ruffled by the suggestion and intended to pay him back for it later. And so they're on their way, with Roxanne avidly keeping landmarks in mind so she'd know her way back. If Brawly spoke she listened, but Roxanne was obviously a little occupied by her thoughts. Thankfully Nosepass was there to knock her out of it if she fell in so deep she didn't recognize her companion talking. When they arrive, the setting is so nice she could cry. Not quite idealic or even her standard, but there were no roaches and his air conditioner worked and the lingering odor of pollution was only half as bad. But she doesn't cry, because she's Roxanne. She smooths her skirt out instead, as if trying to live up to this nice place. She begins to focus on the couch, wondering if Brawly had blankets to spare or if she was going to be going without. She didn't mind either way, with how warm the nights had been.

"And where is this toaster for our nick-of-time arrival?" hands pin to her hips; she definitely intends to make breakfast for the event. Roxanne hums pleasantly, already making herself at home.  "Is there even peanut butter or some kind of protein supplement in this city? How are you going to get by?" it's a jest, but one Roxanne hopes doesn't turn out to be a jinx. She begins to root around for fruit that could be used for smoothies the next day.
